Shop owner shot in Orkney robbery
Lentswe, Orkney - The owner of a supermarket in Flecker Street was shot and one of his employees stabbed in an armed robbery early on Sunday May 21.
WO Elize van Schalkwyk said three men entered the premises demanding money. “Shot were fired and one of the employees was stabbed with a knife.
“The robbers fled the scene in a white double cab bakkie.’’
The robbery happened around 10:00. The injured men were trans- ported to hospital. Police are still
investigating.
In another robbery in Orkney on Sat- urday evening May 20 in Burns Street, a pedestrian was robbed of his cellphone.
“He said he was walking with a friend in the street at 22:30 when a white BMW dropped two males. They walked to him and produced a firearm, threatening to shoot him if he does not hand over his phone. The BMW picked them up and drove away.’’
No arrests have been made.

Lentswe, Jouberton - In yet another social media advertising scam a victim lost R170 000 after thinking he bought a Toyota Quantum.
The advertisement however was a scam. According to Col Adele Myburgh, police spokesperson, the victim reacted on an advertisement on Facebook Mar- ketplace.
“He agreed to meet the seller at a house in Ext 15 in Jouberton. Accom-
panied by members of his family they met at the house on Sunday May 21,’’
she said.
The seller was not at the home, but his son met with the victim and his fam- ily where they were shown the vehicle and given the car keys as well as papers for the vehicle.
“Happy with the purchase, the victim transferred the money into a Capitec account and signed an agreement to
pay of the balance he still owed on the vehicle,’’ Col Myburgh said.
That is when all hell broke loose. “Six armed men stormed into the house, claiming to be police officers. They said that they were looking for the Quantum as it was used in a crime.
“They demanded everyones cell- phones and purses and left them inside the home for two hours.
“When they returned they handed
their cellphones back and told them to go to the police station to report the incident.’’
The victim then realised the so- called police officers deleted the bank- ing applications on their phones so he could not cancel the previous transac- tion.
Anyone with information on the crime are requested to contact Sgt Tshe- po Bantjies on 082 568 6086.
Lentswe, Orkney - With Nampo traffic at its peak on the R30, police officers in Orkney did not mince about when they arrested armed robbers fleeing from a crime scene in Klerksdorp.
The arrest created quite a scene on the corner of Carlyle and Stevenson Road in Orkney’s early morning traffic on Friday May 19. WO Elize Kruger said the call for assistance came through after a robbery in Klerksdorp’s Noord Street. “We heard the white VW Polo was seen speeding in the direction of Orkney and we alerted all our vehicles. In the end our crime preven- tion unit with assistance by Stilfontein K9 pulled the vehicle over and arrested the occupants.’’
A firerarm, ammunition and a bag filled with cellphones stolen in the armed robbery were discovered inside the vehi- cle.
The robbers appeared in the Orkney Magistrates Court on Tuesday May 23 on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as pos- session of suspected stolen property. They were also charged in Klerksdorp with business robbery.
The case was postponed until May 30 for further investigation. It is suspected that the robbers will also apply for bail.
“We have to confirm their residential ad- dresses this week. Apparently they are from Bloemfontein. The possibility of their involvement in other crimes in the area is also investigated,’’ WO Van Schalk- wyk said.
Commentators on Facebook congratu- lated SAPS with the arrest. Wesley John Kapp said on Klerksdorp Record’s Face- book page that he is “proud again of our town and police’’.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - A 45-year old man was robbed of all his belongings after hitch- ing a ride in Klerksdorp.
The victim told the police he scored a lift on the N12 next to Oudorp on Sunday after- noon May 21. “He got in a BMW with three occupants who offered to drive him as far as Bloemhof as his destination was Hoopstad.
About 30 kilometres out of Klerksdorp two passengers produced firearms, threatening the hitchhiker,’’ said Col Adele Myburgh, po- lice spokesperson.
They demanded money and searched him for valuables before dropping him next to
the road. They took everything he had with him and fired a shot, instructing him to run without looking back. The robbers drove away.
The traumatised hitchhiker got a lift from a truck back to Klerksdorp and opened a docket at the police station. Col Myburgh warned people to refrain from hitchhiking and rather use public transport to not be- come a victim of crime.
Anyone with information that will help the police in their investigation, can contact WO Brian van der Westhuizen on 083 462 3951.
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Robbers ambushed a 36-year old man on Sunday night May 14 in the CBD after he parked a Toyota Hilux bakkie returning to his flat in Latham House, Anderson Street.
It was dark during load- shedding at 22:00 when the two robbers chased him while he walked from the vehicle to the flat’s entrance. “He no- ticed them and tried to escape through the security entrance to the block of flats but when he closed the security gate they shoved a firearm in his face, threatening to shoot him. They
demanded the vehicle’s keys,’’
said Col Adele Myburgh, police spokesperson.
The scared victim said he dropped the vehicle’s keys and the robbers picked it up. “They fired a shot and proceeded to the vehicle and then fired an- other few shots when driving away. No one was injured.’’
The vehicle was discovered abandoned a few hours later in Alabama.
The vehicle’s battery was missing. Anyone with informa- tion on the crime is requested to contact WO Nico Cilliers on 078 389 8426.
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs Division intercepted a truck carrying 440 master boxes of Remington Gold cigarettes, with estimated total value of R9 million at the Beitbridge border post.
The cigarettes were falsely declared as Cotton Oil Cake. The Customs Officer conducting random inspection on Saturday evening May 20 became suspicious when the value of goods declared on the document and the load on the truck did not match.
Upon questioning the driver, the answers
provided were inconsistent with the docu- ment. He then redirected the truck to the inspection ramp and unpacked the load and discovered goods hidden under Cotton Oil Cake.
The truck and the goods were detained and booked in the SARS State warehouse.
The driver was arrested and handed over to the SAPS.
SARS Commissioner SARS Edward Kies- wetter said traders who are wilfully defraud- ing the state will be dealt with forcefully and mercilessly.
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Shots were fired at the sewerage works in Jou- berton on Sunday May 14 when cable thieves held security guards hostage so they could steal cable.
Col Adele Myburgh, police spokesperson, said a security su- pervisor arrived at the gate of the municipal sewer works at around 19:30 to check on his guards.
“Four armed men approached him and opened fire on his vehi- cle. He returned fire, fleeing the scene and contacted the police for back up.’’
When the police arrived they found the security guards tied up inside the guard room. The en- trance to the sewer works were also blocked with rocks and the perpe- trators managed to dig out copper cable.
There was no sign of them when the police arrived.
The police are investigating at- tempted murder and damage of infrastructure.
Anyone with information is requested to contact Sgt Kgotso Mphofu on 018 465 9359.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - People often joke that ten years keeping a charity afloat should be measured in dog years. That’s how tough it is.But looking at Charleen Die- dericks and Nomondo Lehloo, the founding ‘mothers’ of Khaya Tshepo Home of Hope for Vulner- able Children in Klerksdorp, you see the glimmer in their eyes and the hope in their smiles.
Yes, they’ve aged and with that came the grey hair and the walking stick (Charlene had a hip replacement surgery), but they would not change a thing about the last decade, laughs Charleen.
She and Nomonde are besties ‘for richer and for poorer’ and togeth- er they run the NPO to the best of their ability.
Nomonde checks a file. “Yes, 177 children went through our care in ten years.’’ 177 children they’ve fed, taught, cried with, laugh with and got countless hugs from.
In their office filled with chil- dren’s toys, funny quotes, plants and lots and lots of paperwork, Charleen and Nomonde are the cogs that keep the wheels of Khaya Tshepo turning. The Centre has come a long way since their struggles to find a suit- able spot for the day care facility back in 2013. Was it not for an anonymous donor who bought the home for a lifelong rent-free stay this would not have been possible.
“Nothing would have been possible without the incredible support from our community and
local businesses who as part of their social responsibility support us with donations. Yes, times are tough. Especially now after Covid and with load-shedding hurt- ing our economy. Some of our regular sponsors
withdrew due to financial strain.
We understand and pray they get back on their feet again.’’
Khaya Tshepo currently pro- vides care for 48 children aged 4 months to 6 years who are made vulner- able by poverty, illness, and the death of their
primary carers. They are looked after by grand-parents, who, due their age, are not always able to attend to the needs of the little ones. This means that sometimes school-going siblings are kept home to assist with the care. Some children are under-developed due to social circumstances in their homes, where the family does not have the means to provide for them. They are identified through Home Based Care groups in Ala- bama, Khuma and Jouberton.
Khaya Tshepo functions as a pre-school and the happy noises of children learning the alphabet and reciting poems fill the home in AenMay Street in Elandia.
Charleen is the project manager and Nomonde the community liaison officer. Also in employ- ment is four teachers, a driver
and a housekeeper who cooks and cleans.
The Centre provides transport to and from the Centre Mon- days to Fridays, age-appropriate education, two nutritious meals
& 2 snacks a day, support to the families by helping them to access identity documents and ultimately social grants, assistance with registration into “Big School”
once the children reach 7 years old.
Combined with these are lots of love and care to stimulate the children’s self-esteem. Nomonde says they do not cut ties with children once they leave Khaya Tshepo, keeping up to date with their progress and home visits.
“It is a heart-breaking experi- ence when children are admitted with malnutrition and other social illnesses yet, so empowering when we see what good nutrition, love and care provided by our dedi- cated staff, can accomplish. Such children develop into strong, clever and confident individuals after a couple of months.’’
This weekend there will be a celebration at Khaya Tshepo of ten years well lived. Looking to the future, they put their trust in God, who always provide.
Have a look at Khaya Tshepo’s Facebook page to stay up to date with needs at the Centre.

Lentswe, Jouberton - A long time resident of Jou- berton turned 90 recently and is still going strong.

“She is loving and caring. We as her grandchil- dren and great grandchildren are so fortunate to still have her as a parent, because of her teach- ings,” said Abea.
Gogo Moalodi has lost most of her six children, but she has made lots of children in church and on the street. She is often asked how she managed to get this old and then she says she respected her elders.
“I don’t drink and avoided adultery at all cost,”
the wise Gogo shared.
She keeps herself busy by looking after the chil- dren and going to church, where she is known as the “principal”.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - STADIO, a pri- vate tertiary institution, has granted its very first two doctoral degrees to Eme- tia Maria Swart and Kennedy Kaumba Mabuku.
Swart received a Doctor of Manage- ment degree, while Mabuku received a Doctor of Policing degree. They both completed their studies in the minimum period of two years and were lauded by the panel of external examin- ers.Swart was born and raised in Klerks- dorp. Her research investigated the fac- tors influencing consumers’ behaviour in the decision-making process when choosing a private higher education in- stitution. Mabuku’s research focused on developing a framework for performing internal security as a constitutional ob- ligation of the Namibian Police Force, aiming to address the gap in existing frameworks of security that haven’t of- fered contemporary insights into the preservation of internal security.
Prof Elmarie Sadler, Dean: Research, Internationalisation and Community Engagement, said the graduation of STADIO’s first doctorate students is a significant milestone for the institution.
“By introducing the two doctorates, the Doctor of Management and the Doctor of Policing in January 2021 STADIO officially offers degree qualifications on all the NQF levels,” she says.
“The two doctorates conferred dur- ing the May 2023 graduation ceremo- nies mark the first doctorates of the 2021 cohort.”

Lentswe, Orkney - Orkney Young Zebras FC got it right this time by leaping to the interprovincial play- offs.
The boys from Kanana township sailed smoothly to the next level pushing aside Tiki Taka Academy from Ikageng township by 3 - 1.
The two teams went into break with 1 goal each. It was Tiki Taka Academy who drew blood first from the hosts and Orkney Young Zebras FC levelled matters before half-time.
In the second stanza Orkney Young Zebras FC were awarded a penalty which they easily converted.
Nelson Jacobs put the last nail into the coffin bringing the score to 3 - 1 in favour of the lads from Kanana.
The two goals of the day by Nel- son Jacobs proved dominance of the game by the Zebras and this catapulted the Dr K Kaunda regional
champions to the interprovincial play-offs at Bojanala on June 3.
Hopefully Bojanala region will have their house in order and bring one team instead of the two they brought to Promosa stadium last season.
Lebogang April was chosen best goalkeeper and Nelson Jacobs was the best player of the match with his two goals that rattled the net. They are both players from Orkney Young Zebras FC.
The winning coach and best was Thabo Maimane also from Orkney Young Zebras FC.
White Mogakwe was also honoured for the contribution he made to foot- ball. This time Zebras would like to see themselves playing in the provin- cial ABC Motsepe league having lost out several times.
