Klerksdorp Midweek, Klerksdorp – Local public schools were closed on Monday 27 July as per President Cyril Ramaphosa’s an- nouncement last week that public schools must close for four weeks.

Schools will reopen on 24 August. Grade 12 teachers and pupils will get a one week break, while grade 7s will only stay home for two weeks. Ramaphosa said the acade- mic year will extend beyond 2020.

Teachers’ unions have been calling for schools to be closed for the whole of August because of the increasing Covid-19 infec- tions.

At the time of writing, the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) threatened to shut down private schools that reopened on 27 July.

“The Congress of South African Students

will be shutting down private schools in all parts of the country,” COSAS president Douglas Ngobeni said.

“This comes after President Cyril Rama- phosa announced that only public schools would close. The virus does not care whe- ther your father is a billionaire.”

COSAS believes that private schools should not be allowed to reopen if public schools must remain shut until August, as announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa during his national address on 23 July.

They argue that private schools reopening will give these students an unfair academic advantage.

COSAS plans to disrupt learning at pri- vate institutions across the country until government establishes a more fair re- sponse.

Klerksdorp Midweek, Klerksdorp - With South Africa having been in lockdown for more than 100 days already, people are ex- periencing a variety of emotions, ranging from sadness, fear, anxiety and loneliness to anger.

People experiencing anger came into focus when businessman Vusi Thembekwayo shared an emotion-laden video that went vi- ral on social media a few days ago. Vusi, a multimillionaire, was clearly angry while he took his followers through an abandoned office space in Sandton, Johannesburg. The lives, salaries, income, pensions and the ability to provide for their families of 70 people who had once worked there had all been destroyed when they had lost their jobs as a result of the economic effect of the Covid-19 pandemic we are facing.

Prof Ankebé Kruger, a senior psychologist at the Institute of Psychology and Wellbeing of the North-West University (NWU), says in addition to job losses and the associa-ted financial implications, people may experien- ce anger about other losses such as normalcy, routines, valued activities, their health and that of their family, and the ability to visit friends and relatives living in other provinces.

“The well-known model of grief as proposed by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross details the stages of grief as denial, bargaining, anger, sadness/depression and acceptance.

Research suggests that after a loss, disbelief and yearning often occur first, followed by anger. Also, people’s anger may be directed towards teachers with regard to challenges with emergency remote learning, people who are ignorant of the ‘rules’, restrictions imposed on us, and even towards the gov- ernment and politicians – which was clearly the case with Vusi Thembekwayo.”

Prof Kruger says people are commonly

protecting themselves from unpleasant feel- ings such as anger by engaging a defense mechanism called displacement, in which people transfer their emotions from the ori- ginal source of anger to another person or situation.

“Displacement occurs subconsciously and therefore people often do not realise they are transferring their anger from one situation to another situation. For example, a woman who is angry because she lost her mother di- rects anger at the nursing home’s nurse who was with her mother at the end of her life.

Because many of us are still working from home, we need to be particularly careful about taking out our anger on the people we see the most, which is probably our family members. Snapping at a child for talking while you are in a Zoom meeting or yelling at your partner for not keeping the kids quiet during a work call may indicate that you are displacing your anger,” she says.

According to Prof Kruger, experiencing anger is absolutely normal, and once you understand your anger and where you tend to direct it, you can make a conscious effort to deal with your emotions in a healthier manner. Think about the acronym RAIN (Recognise, Accept, Investigate and Nur- ture):

Recognise when you are angry and identify where the anger is in your body.

Accept the anger and understand that it is okay to be angry.

Investigate the physical sensations in your body. What does it feel like to be angry?

Nurture the anger. Be kind to yourself when you are angry, do not blame yourself for being angry and do not be self-critical.

Remind yourself that anger is a vital emo- tion, letting you know where your bounda- ries are and what you value.

Klerksdorp Midweek, Klerksdorp - All car licences that expire during the period 26 March 2020 up to an including 31 August 2020 are valid until ending 31 January 2021.

The directive by the Road Traffic Manage- ment Corporation (RTMC) last week to extend the validity period of licences which expired between 26 March and 31 August to the end of January 2021 is a major victory for motorists in South Africa, says the Automo- bile Association (AA).

“As the champion of South African motorists we are elated at this move. It’s great news for motorists who have been worried about being legal on the road in the face of mounting back- logs with renewals. We applaud the govern- ment and the RTMC for making this decision which, ultimately, is the right way forward.

We also want to thank the Minister for being responsive to motorists’ needs during this dif- ficult time and for taking this pragmatic step,”

says Willem Groenewald, CEO of the AA.

Vehicle licence discs, temporary permits and roadworthy certificates that expired during the same period are valid until 31 August. The AA says as part of its ongoing advocacy work matters such as the licence extension and other important issues which affect South African motorists will continue to be a priority for the Association, and that it’s only through the

strength of a committed Member base that this work is possible.

“Tens of thousands of concerned South Africans signed our online petition which urged the government to extend the period. At the time we noted that motorists want to be compliant and what to remain legally on the road but that they were experiencing problems doing so. We must thank all of these motorists for being active citizens and for playing their role,” says Groenewald.

The AA says it trusts government will moni- tor the situation with renewals closely and consider further extensions in the new year should the need arise.

“We believe much can be done between now and the end of January to clear backlogs but if there are still issues with renewals at that time, government will need to consider a further extension beyond the end of January to ensure everyone is accommodated fairly,”

Groenewald says.

The AA says the extension is giving motor- ists some breathing space in terms of renewals but it urges all motorists with expired licences to not waste the opportunity and to get these renewed sooner rather than later.

Last week’s report in Klerksdorp Record was published before the validity period was extended again.
