by MOHANOE KHIBA Lentswe, Kanana - The police woman that was murdered in Ka- nana was probably beaten to death with a golf club and a hammer found on the crime scene.
Her ex-boyfriend was later found dead after he was the main suspect in Sgt Martha Mamoitoyi Bouwer’s (41) murder. Her body was disco- vered on Wednesday 1 July around 19:50 at her house in Ext 14 Kanana. The couple had an 8-year- old daughter together.
According to the provincial police spokesperson Brig Sabata Mokgwabone, Sando Khandile (40) was found hanging from a tree between no 6 and 7 shaft near Orkney at approximately 17:30 on
Saturday 4 July.
Bouwer’s uncle Pule Mogoera said: “We did not expect this. We are very sad. We found a golf club and a hammer with blood on that were probably used as weapons to kill my niece.”
On Monday 6 July, Matlosana Mayor Maetu Kgaile, the ANCWL Kenneth Kaunda Regional Secre- tary Kedibone Chabalala and other women visited the family to share their condolences.
Chabalala said: “The women, children and progressive men of our country including in Dr Ken- neth Kaunda region have marched, signed petitions, held prayers, issued statements and killing of women still continues.
“Men must tell us what we have
done wrong.
“Hopefully after we apologized they will stop raping and killing us.
What is our sin that we have com- mitted to deserve to be raped and killed by men?”
Mayor Kgaile said God gave men more powers than of the women, but unfortunately men misuse those powers by abusing women.
“Men that we trust and think that they are our friends, are the ones who kill us,” she added.
Bouwer’s funeral service will be held at her house, 22832 Ext 14 Kanana from 08:00.

Lentswe, Pochefstroom - The Speaker of parliament Thandi Modise appeared in the Potch Regional Court on Wednesday 1 July.
This follows after AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit announced in 2018 that they will privately prosecute Modise on behalf of the National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA).
On Wednesday, Modise had to supply reasons for her failure to appear in court in March on charges of cruelty to animals against her and the court adjudicated that she had sufficient reason not to appear as a result of the

Covid-19 pandemic. Modise’s legal representative argued that President Cyril Ramaphosa instructed her to help manage the Covid-19 pandemic there- for she could not come to Potch.
During her appearance, Modise told the court that she couldn’t appear in court on 24 March seeing as President Ramaphosa requested an urgent meet- ing with her on 23 March.
The Private Prosecution Unit ear- lier said that Modise’s lawyers already notified them on 18 March that she would be unable to appear in Court on 24 March as a result of that meeting of 23 March.
AfriForum said Modise also failed to notify the President that she must appear in Court on 24 March or to request that the meeting be post- poned.
“Modise replied to Advocate Gerrie Nel’s question relating to this issue that she doubt whether Advocate Nel would have asked her this question if the Pre- sident was a white man,” AfriForum said.
“AfriForum welcomes the fact that
a date for prosecution has now at long last been deter- mined, but we will not allow the accused to have this hearing being turned into a racial issue, because the legal system is supposed to be colour blind.
“No-one is above the law, not even the Speaker of par- liament. AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit is looking forward to finally begin with the hearing so that Modise can be held accountable for this barbarous case of animal cruelty,” Chief Investigator at AfriForum’s Private Prose- cution Unit Andrew Leask said.
The case was postponed to 1 December.
Lentswe, Jouberton - After two inci- dents of mob justice in the district, the District Commissioner of Dr Kenneth Kaunda, Maj Genl Suzette Pretorius urged members of the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
The incidents were reported over the weekend in Jouberton and Ikageng.
According to the North West police spokesperson Brig Sabata Mokgwa- bone, in Jouberton, police were sum- moned in the evening on Sunday 5 July to the Waterfall informal settlement in
Ext 17 where a middle-aged man was found dead with multiple head inju- ries. The victim was assaulted by some members of the community who ac- cused him of rape.
“In another separate incident, in Ikageng on Saturday 4 July, police were called to a scene behind Marikana near Promosa outside Potchefstroom where an unknown man suspected to be in his early 20’s, was found severely assaulted by some members of the community.
“In order to protect the victim from further attacks, the law abiding citizens
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The police are concerned about common robberies happening particularly in the CBD.
According to Sgt Amogelang Mabihi, police spokesperson, they appeal to the public to be alert when walking or shopping in town as people are now covering their faces with masks owing to Covid-19 regulations which makes it quite difficult to identify the perpetrators of crime.
“While we do our utmost best to conduct patrols, it is impossible to cover all the areas all the time.
People are being robbed while sit- ting inside their vehicles by crimi- nals operating in pairs, one will
distract the driver while the other opens the car to steal the valua- bles such as cellphones, wallets, handbags, laptops, groceries etc.
“Women in most cases are tar- gets as they are defenseless. Rob- beries at ATMs are also proble- matic. Be alert at all times. Check your surroundings and suspicions people following you. Keep all valuables out of sight, cellphones and wallets visible from pockets makes you a target for criminals.
Do not talk to strangers. Always ensure that your groceries are placed in the boot and the vehicle is safely locked before leaving. Do not walk alone in isolated places,”
she said.
Two men killed in mob justice
who were at the scene, put him in the police van. He was then taken to a local clinic where he was declared dead by paramedics. The victim was accused of raping an eight-year-old girl. However, no case was reported to the police,”
Mokgwabone added.
The District Commissioner warned that taking the law into one’s hands is an illegal act which cannot be con- doned. Furthermore, Maj Genl Preto- rius urged the public to report criminal acts to the police rather than taking the law into their own hands.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Health workers and people working in hospitals are increasingly panicked due to a spike of infections at local hospitals.
Hospitals cannot close down, says Nico Masiu of the Klerksdorp/Tshe- pong Hospital Complex, and even though hospital management is con- cerned about employees the rate of infection among staff members are in- creasing rapidly.
“National guidance is clear that workplaces must reduce the risk of in- fection to vulnerable employees. This include that those over the age of 60
years and with underlying health condi- tions must stay home.”
Prof Binu Luke, Chief Specialist Physician at the hospital complex, said Covid-19 infections tripled in the last three weeks of June in both the public and private sector and he advised that staff be extra cautions during lunch time and tea breaks.
“Most staff to staff transmission hap- pen during these breaks. To avoid the pressure associated with closure of a company or facility, staff members are advised to be extra cautious during lunch and tea periods.
“Staff must observe social distancing and practice hand hygiene to prevent transmissions. At all times, make use of provided personal protective equip- ment, particularly masks.”
It is important to maintain social dis- tancing when eating or drinking.
“Please do not drink directly from the same source as someone else. Don’t share. Use your own glass. Maintain distancing and refrain from behaviour that would compromise your health and lead to unnecessary Covid-19 testing and quarantine and or hospital admis- sion,” Masiu said.

Enough beds for patients
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - There is still enough hospital beds available for pa- tients in the Kosh Area.
Hospitals including Wesvaal Hospi- tal in Orkney as well as the Duff Scott hospital in Stilfontein are still not fully utilised yet.
Nico Masiu, spokesperson of the Klerksdorp/Tshepong Hospital com- plex, said facilities at Tshepong are fully functional.
“Ward 1 is used for treatment of Covid-19 patients, ward 2 for Patients Under Investigation (PUI) for mild symptoms, ward 3 is Covid-19 High Care and ICU and ward 4 is a respira- tory ward.
Meanwhile, in Klerksdorp Hospital patients under investigation are admit- ted as ward 9 is used as a treatment ward.
Orkney’s Westvaal Hospital is fully functioning and 120 of the 250 beds are used for mild covid-19 positive cases in- cluding six ICU beds.
“We are in the process of opening up the rest of the beds, but if need be, Duff Scott Hospital in Stilfontein has been put on alert to open,’’ said Masiu.
“Potchefstroom Hospital has 26 treat- ment beds excluding a PUI ward. The main advice that we strategically share in the sector is to encourage self-isola- tion and self-quarantine, if not possible to institutionalise,” he added.
“The public must please take note that self-declaration and testing is highly encouraged, but testing of asymptomatic individuals is currently discouraged as we need to conserve our test kits to patients with significant symptoms as it has a bearing on clinical management,” he said.
The private hospitals in Klerksdorp reassure people that beds are available when needed.
TJ Mokoena, spokesperson at Life Anncron Hospital, said “nobody will be shown away”.
The hospital has 32 beds in their Covid ward and their ICU has 16 beds attached to ventilators.
“The situation is grim, but if needed we will make more beds available in other wards,” said Mokoena.
Hennie Steenkamp, general Man- ager: Wilmed Park Hospital, assured Klerksdorpians that they have beds available in the MMHS Group (Wilmed Park and Sunningdale hospitals).
“We can accommodate Covid pa- tients. It depends on how many people need hospitalization at the same time.
That changes daily,” said Steenkamp.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture Emmanuel Nkosinathi Mthethwa published direc- tives which explain the rules required for the reopening of cinemas and theatres.
These new regulations relaxed a number of lockdown restrictions, and included the reopening of restaurants, theatres, and cinemas, as well the lift- ing of the restrictions on sporting activities.
The new regulations state that cine- mas and theatres are allowed to open to the public provided that only 50 people or less, excluding staff mem- bers, are allowed in compliance with health safety protocols.
These locations must have hand sanitisers, social distancing must be adhered to, masks must be worn at all times, and may only be removed when eating or drinking, contactless payments and pre-booking should be used wherever possible, premises must be deep-cleaned before use, and facilities such as equipment, tools, and bathrooms must be cleaned regularly, windows and doors should be kept open where possible to improve ven- tilation. These locations must have dedicated areas for the isolation of in- dividuals who exhibit Covid-19 symp- toms while within the premises.
Those entering will be subjected to temperature screening and people with an elevated temperature may be refused access to the premises.
Cinemas and theatres are required to apply to the Minister to reopen for business, the regulations stated, and a compliance officer must be appointed by the business in question.
“A person above the age of 60 or a person with comorbidities is discou- raged from visiting the places or pre- mises,” the regulations said.
The regulations said that contact sport training may resume without any spectators and must comply with the health protocols.
However, all sports bodies must ap- ply within 14 days after the publica- tion of the directives for the resump- tion of training, and their applications must include information such as a full operational plan, the number of players and officials involved, and the date of resumption of training.
Sports bodies must also keep a re- gister with the names and details of all participating athletes.
Non-contact sporting bodies must also apply to resume training in matches in the same manner, and these applications will be considered within seven days of submission.
If the Minister declines the sport- ing body’s application, they will be allowed to appeal this ruling, which will be considered within 14 days after filing.
“A sporting body may not resume training or matches before receiving the approval of the Minister in wri- ting,” the regulations said.
