CAKE, TOYS FOR POLICE BABY
Lentswe, Stilfontein - The little girl who saw her first light at the Stilfon- tein police station was treated with gifts and sweet treats on her third birthday last week.
Loyalty Moeti was born on Sep- tember 17 when her mother was rushed to the police station suffering from labour pains in a time of unrest in Khuma.
Sgt Amogelang Malwetse, po-
lice spokesperson, said Khuma was closed due to a shutdown and not even ambulances could enter.
“Loyalty’s mother was rushed to Stilfontein police station during shift change and the police officers who were on duty had to perform extraor- dinary work of assisting the mother as she gave birth on arrival at the station.
“The healthy baby was delivered
successfully without any complica- tions,’’ she said.
Last week, Grandmother Julia Moeti arrived at the police station begging for help to buy the little girl a cake for her birthday as she did not have anything to give her.
The joy of seeing what Stilfontein police refer to as ‘our Saps baby’ and touched by her granny’s condition, the station Commander of Stilfon-
tein, Colonel Gaolatlhwe Senwedi called an urgent meeting with his management and they decided to buy not only a birthday cake but toys and groceries as part of social responsibility given the family’s back- ground.
Col Senwedi thanked granny and appreciated the wonderful respon- sibility she is taking of taking good care of our baby girl.

Baby Loyalty arrived home happy with the gifts.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp – The man who shot and killed a tambaai driver in a drinking spree back in 2019, was sentenced to life imprisonment in the North West High Court sitting in Klerksdorp.
The court heard how the night out with Thabo Thakampana (29), his friend, Katleho Ramuth- lane (33) and another man still on the run from the police turned violent. They were drinking at a tavern in Kanana when they left in the early morning hours to continue their good time in Klerksdorp. That is when they asked David Mahl- apa Sekhola who operated a public transport ser- vice to take them to the CBD. Sekhola, was with two friends at the time and all six of them left for Klerksdorp.
Near the Vaal Maseru bus depot the night turned deadly. Sekhola was shot and Thakam- pana and his friends continued to rob his friends, before driving off with them still in the car. They dropped the driver’s body next to the road. The friends managed to escape and alerted the police who could track the vehicle through its tracking device to a house in Bophelong near Vanderbijl- park. Thakampana was arrested while Ramuth- alane and the third suspect managed to outrun the police but Ramuthalane was apprehended in Kanana the following day.
Thakamphana and Ramuthalane were charged with murder and kidnapping. Ramuth- alane pleaded guilty to robbery with aggravating circumstances, and kidnapping, and he was sen- tenced to 15-year imprisonment for that offence and a further 5 years for kidnapping. The court further declared him unfit to possess a firearm.
The two sentences were ordered to run concur- rently. The court also ordered that the one year eleven months he stayed in police custody while awaiting trial, be factored into his jail term.
Meanwhile, Thakampana pleaded not guilty to all charges and his trial was separated.
In aggravation of sentence, Adv Benny Kalak- gosi urged the court not to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence, equaling life im- prisonment.
Judge Andre Pietersen indicated that the courts have a responsibility to promote respect for the law, through appropriate sentencing. He described Thakampana as a remorseless indi- vidual, whose nefarious action brought enormous devastation to the family of the deceased, as well as the two surviving victims.
Thakampana was sentenced to life imprison- ment for murder, 15 years in each of the charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, 5 years for kidnapping, 7 years for possession of an unlicensed firearm and 3 years for possession of ammunition. The sentence will run concurrently and he was further declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, lauded Adv Kalakgosi and Warrant Officer Menzile Sokhwemba, for securing a fa- vourable conviction on all charges. “Serious and violent crimes need to be rooted out of our com- munities and we hope this conviction will dem- onstrate the seriousness with which the criminal justice system intends to deal with such offences,”
she concluded.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Over 15 000 healthcare services have been provided to school learners across communities within the Matlosana and Maquassi Hills Local Municipalities, via a mobile clinic, in the last year.
This is part of a health- care programme directed at learners to identify health barriers to learning and pro- vide communities with access to quality healthcare.
What’s more, the pro- gramme has provided oppor-
tunities for the youth to work in the health sector, contributing to the development, training, and retention of local health profes- sionals. “We are delighted to have engaged with companies that care about the development of our learners.
“This programme has successfully enhanced learning, by identifying and treating health issues, and since we always strive for high performance from our learners, this has helped us im- mensely,” said Makuru Geneke, Principal at Tshebedisano Se- condary School, one of the 23 schools that have directly benefited from the programme.
In collaboration with the District Department of Health, Boka- moso Solar funded this initiative as part of their School Health Programme, which aims to deliver free and accessible healthcare to locals, including providing health education; administering of medication; as well as follow-ups and referrals.
“Through early detection and diagnosis, this programme as- sists towards achieving the goal of ending communicable dis- eases in our host communities. Furthermore, health education strengthens the prevention of substance abuse, including narcotic drug abuse. The programme also ensures universal access to sex- ual and reproductive health-care education and the integration of reproductive health into national strategies and programmes,”
explained Claire Phutieagae, Community Operations Officer for Bokamoso Solar.
Hata Butle School in Khuma Grd R learners celebrated career day and all learners had a splendid day by narrative genres of what their careers entail for example policeman, doctor etc. Teachers Thoko Sereo, Ntaoleng Ramoji, Goitsemang Mlandu are with the little ones.

Jabulani Street residents in Ext 6, Jouberton closed the street on Saturday September 17 due to unattended sewerage spills that have been flowing from 2016. As a result, the tar road is full of potholes and is destroyed.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The wheels of change are rolling and the NW Depart- ment of Agriculture and Rural Develop- ment stands firm on ensuring the Can- nabis Master Plan finds space in agri- culture transformation in the province.
This follows the Department hosting the much-anticipated hybrid Cannabis Lekgotla at the North West University last week (September 14-16).
The gathering was welcomed and ap- preciated by various cannabis advocacy groups which amongst them included the Cannabis Council of South Africa, the Rastafarians formations, traditional leaders, academics, interest groups and individuals as well as farmers. The first of its kind in the North West Province, the gathering met its objective of dis- cussing the rollout of the National Can- nabis Master Plan and engaging on the economic purpose of commercialisation and development of the herb.
MEC Desbo Mohono in her open- ing remarks said that the department provides a stark reminder that every avenue to create employment and fight poverty must be pursued, allowing businesses to grow, emerge and thrive, while also using the capabilities of the state to create a conducive environ- ment for farmers. Mohono said: “This is hands on deck indeed and a dream come true for people of the North West province, for they too deserve to benefit from the value chain of this herb. As the government, we always appreciate
the direct, considered and constructive approach that higher institutions of learning take in responding to the chal- lenges facing our country. That is why we saw it fit as the North West Depart- ment of Agriculture and Rural Develop- ment to rope in North West University, in particular, looking at their research output, which is amongst the best in the entire country”.
The Hybrid Lekgotla was graced by Principal and Vice Chancellor of NWU, Dr Mzubanzi Bismark Tyobeka who vouched support for the master plan rollout. “We must all work with the gov- ernment to assist in the review of policy and regulatory framework that will fast- track the industrialisation of hemp and cannabis towards the realization of eco- nomic investment and job creation. The North-West University is ready to con- tribute towards the implementation of the National Cannabis Master Plan to unlock the economic potential of rural communities,” said Dr Tyobeka.
Breakaway discussions by experts, business community, the public, cultural and religious groups took place and report backs on the envisaged roll out plan were shared with the department.
In heeding the recommendations of the commissions, Head of Department Thupi Mokhatla presented the adopted and approved the Programme of Ac- tion. The gathering resolved that the province will establish Provincial Can- nabis Structure with clear powers, func-
Dagga plans not just a puff of smoke
tions and reporting lines. The gather- ing also agreed that Action Plans and/
or the adopted Programme of Action [POA] by the Cannabis Lekgotla will be implemented. The gathering has also developed terms of reference for the Provincial Cannabis Structure and that the structure will meet on a quarterly basis.
All these will be actioned by delegat- ed institutions and stakeholders by the stipulated time frame.
In conclusion, MEC Mohono said the Lekgotla unlocked many oppor- tunities through commissions and the
education drive. “In going forward, we will march to our traditional leaders as the department in forging a partner- ship and making sure that our people in communal land are not left behind by the train of this economic hub. The department will also set aside a certain amount of money in making sure that we train our farmers fully about how to be experts in this field.
This will be done through roping in experts that we have met in this Lek- gotla because we do not want to take a ride with our people’s time,” explained Mme Mohono.

Lentswe, Kanana - A 36-year-old undocumented man was arrested after he was found in possession of three unlicensed firearms and ammuni- tion as well as a toy gun at a block of flats in Ext 3 Kanana.
Members of Public order polic- ing (POP) were conducting routine patrols and stop and searches at Kanana when they entered the flats on Sunday September 18.
One man was found with unli- censed firearms and ammunition which he could not account for, he also did not have documents to be
in the country. He was immediately arrested.
According to Sgt Amogelang Mal-
wetse, police spokesperson, the police continued with their patrols around Kanana doing stop and searches and
15 other foreign nationals aged between 21 and 39 were arrested as they could not produce docu- ments. They were expected to appear in the Orkney magistrate court this week.
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Bringing back those days of 1970’s and 1980’s music, that’s what the soul singer, Brian Saul is cooking for his music lovers.
He is known by his stage name, Oufadafada which represents our grandfathers of those times.
This singer, producer and songwriter, Oufadafada is a Mzansi’ soul music singer from the dusty streets of Jouberton.
Listening or watching his music videos, one could see that he perfectly represented the old times of our elders as soul ballads genre.
The glitz and glamour of his debut single music rhythm clearly speaks volume from hit tracks like
‘Love TKO’ of Teddy Pendergrass, ‘Bump jive’ (The Movers), ‘Say Yes’ of Floetry and others.
The different is in the lyrics of his songs as he sings in Setswana. Speaking to Lentswe about his hit track ‘Media yaka’ where he protects his girlfriend he said: “The song was inspired by our current situation of a high rate of rapes, but mainly gender-based violence against women in our coun- try.
“And then that’s how I am trying to remind men about their responsibilities to protect women in general.”
Oufadafada added: “Women get harassed every day in this community by people we know, but we are scared to confront them.
“It’s about time we protect our girlfriends and wives from the street abusers and cyber bullies.”
He said his music project goes well so far and he’s humbled by the support he gets.
He might appear as new in the music industry, but said he’s been here for almost 15 years behind the scenes.
He thanked Sindaphi Sixmayne (Multimedia manager), DJ 8 Milli (producer) and others.

Lentswe, Wolmaransstad - The May- oral Imbizo hosted by the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality at the youth centre in Tswelelang, drew a massive response from the local busi- ness communities.
Held under the theme, “Communi- ties In Business,” the imbizo was ad- dressed by the district executive mayor, Nikiwe Num.
“Through these imbizos, we want to share the services we are offering as the municipality with members of our community. We also want to give them information on how to grow their busi- nesses,” said Num.
The former MEC for Social Devel- opment in the province also used the platform to announce the incubation hubs programmes and start-up pack- ages that are to be given to emerging young business people.
“It’s important we give them start up
capital so that they can buy the equip- ment they need to grow their business.
I’m also happy with the turn out and it really shows that our people are taking these government programmes very serious,” said Num.
On a disappointing note, Num said she earlier met with young business people who complained that they are denied business opportunities at the district.
“Names of these people were given and I can promise that there will be an investigation into this matter. It can’t be correct that only certain people benefit. We promote openness and fair- ness where business opportunities are concerned.”
Meanwhile, the mayor of Maquassi Hills Local Municipality, Mzwandile Fe- liti, expressed his gratitude at the event being held locally.
“We are happy to be the host as this

event will give our young business peo- ple an opportunity to add their views on what they expect from the district mu- nicipality,” said Feliti.
Many young business people said
they were happy with the initiative.
Some of the stakeholders who attend- ed the event include banks, district Lo- cal Economic Development and Supply Chain Management and Sassa.
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The South African National Bio- diversity Institute (SANBI) is leading the charge to alleviate the national youth unemploy- ment crisis and swell the ranks of South Africa’s biodiversity workers while safeguarding the astonishing and unique fauna and flora of the land.
Groen Sebenza is a R300- million project that creates intern positions in biodiversity management for young peo- ple. The interns are working across several biodiversity and
environmental organisations, acquiring professional skills and significantly upping the number of qualified South African biodi- versity workers.
Groen Sebenza is now in its second phase. In phase one 955 internships and more than 600 permanent jobs were created.
This second phase will create 1 050 Groen Sebenza intern- ships.
“Biodiversity is both a valu- able and vulnerable component of our rich South African herit- age,” says SANBI chief execu-
tive Shonisani Munzhedzi. “We all have a responsibility to un- derstand it, value it and protect it so it may serve future gene- rations as well as it serves ours, and as well as it served those who came before us.
“Through Groen Sebenza SANBI is investing both in young people right now, and in the future: giving marginalised youth an opportunity to find their professional feet in biodi- versity management and build- ing a cadre of persons equipped with the skills, experience and

desire to work in biodiversity management.”
Groen Sebenza interns are placed at more than 80 pub- lic-sector, private-sector and NGO entities across the land.
These entities include, but are not limited to, national, provincial, and metropolitan authorities; wildlife colleges;
nature reserves and national parks; environmental services organisations; conservation trusts; universities and colleg- es; and tourism organisations.
The intern-hosting organi- sations equip participants with a wide range of skills that are not confined to envi- ronmental and sustainability management.
Computer literacy, leader- ship and project management skills are included in the on- the-job training, giving Groen Sebenza interns experience that will serve them across the wide range of economic sectors.
“It’s our intention to build confidence and self-esteem while developing the profes- sional skill set of interns,”
Munzhedzi says. “In the short to medium term, we are bringing capacity to the en- vironmental and biodiversity
sectors of the economy. In the long run, Groen Sebenza is building passion for biodi- versity and sustainability in the youth and giving young people an excellent chance at determining their own profes- sional paths.”
Typically, Groen Sebenza interns spend two years in on- the-job training.
“We adults are custodians of the land’s biodiversity,”
says Munzhedzi. “But the future belongs to the youth;
it is they who will inherit the impact of both our successes, and our mistakes. Groen Se- benza acknowledges this and is working to empower young people to make the best deci- sions for their own personal and professional success and for the sustainability of our natural resources.
“We celebrate each in- tern candidate this Heritage Month, and we thank every Groen Sebenza partner or- ganisation that shares our vi- sion for this project.”
Applications for incubation are now open. Visit https://
