Hiking spot
kidnappers arrested
Lentswe, Orkney - A multidiscipli- nary team established to investigate kidnappings arrested a syndicate believed to be behind at least twelve cases in the Kosh Area.
The syndicate mostly operated in the Potchefstroom, Klerksdorp, Orkney areas and targeted members of the public who were hitchhiking in these areas with their main target being mineworkers.
According to Col Athlenda Ma-the, the syndicate would lure unsuspecting victims from hitch- hiking spots under the pretence of transporting them to their various destinations. “Victims would then be robbed of their personal belong- ings, followed by ransom payment demands that were made to their families for
their safe return,’’ she said.
On Friday March 11, just after midnight, the team traced the sus- pects along the R502 road linking Potchefstroom and Orkney. Two for- eign nationals aged 24 and 37 years old were found travelling in a motor vehicle matching the description of a vehicle wanted in a case where a post office employee was kidnapped last Wednesday.
During the search of the vehicle, police discovered several items belonging to a second victim who had been reported as kidnapped on Thursday. In this matter, a ransom demand was also made to the fami- ly of the victim. The team imme- diately dispatched a search party to rescue the victim who was found
at a stadium in Orkney.
Upon further investigation at
identified ad- dresses, police arrested an-
other 57-year- old foreign natio-nal. At this address, police seized two other ve- hicles believed to have been
utilized in the commission
of other kidnapping cases as well as sixteen mobile phones believed to be belonging to victims in these cases.
During analysis of the modus operandi utilized by these suspects, police have positively linked them to the kidnapping of the post office employee who was released after the ransom payment was paid and at least 12 other kidnapping cases where victims were robbed of their personal belongings and ransom demands made for the safe return of the victims. The possibility of effecting more arrests and linking these suspects to more cases cannot be ruled out.
The National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Khehla Sitole has commended the team led by the Provincial Commissioner in the North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena.
“The swift and collaborative approach by members of this multi-disciplinary team consist- ing of members of the North West Crime Intelligence, the Murder and Robbery unit, the Provincial Narco- tics team, as well as visible policing teams attached to the Orkney and Khuma police stations ought to be commended. We will continue to mobilize resources to capacitate our specialized units with a view of improving policing interventions in

The trio were charged with kidnap- ping, extortion, armed robbery and possession of suspected stolen goods.

Lentswe, Bloemhof - The Pro- vincial Commissioner of North West, Lt-Genl Sello Kwena, welcomed the life imprison- ment sentence handed down to Ofentse Andries Konjo (37) for murder.
According to Adéle Myburgh, police spokesperson, a 50-year- old man was reported missing by his family. During police investigations, witnesses who were minors, came forward and explained how their father (Konjo) killed the victim with an axe on Sewefontein Farm, near Bloemhof.
They further pointed out an old grave on the farm where
the victim was buried. Konjo was ultimately arrested and appeared in the Bloemhof Re- gional Court. The court did not grant him bail and he remained in custody until he was sen- tenced.
In another unrelated inci- dent, Bloemhof Regional Court found a 24-year-old Eva Tau guilty of murder last week.
“This verdict came after po- lice who were on patrol met Tau, holding her boyfriend, Piet Tsimanakwe Wageng (38), in her arms, with a stab wound on his chest in July 2020 at Protea Street, Bloemhof. She alleged that her boyfriend was stabbed
by two unknown men who fled the scene. EMRS paramedics were immediately summoned and took Wageng to the Bloem- hof Community Health Centre where he died shortly after ar- rival. Police investigations re- vealed that Tau and Wageng had an argument, whilst in the company of friends. Tau, during the argument, pushed Wageng outside the house and stabbed him. Sentencing will follow shortly.”
Zwelethu Victor Sengwape (18) was also found guilty of murder by the Bloemhof Re- gional Court last week in con- nection with the death of a four-
The traffic lights that disappeared at the intersection of Monica Avenue and the new Doringkruin Road weren’t taken down for maintenance. They were indeed stolen, and the electrical cables as well! This was confirmed by Anton Marais, deputy director: Department of Public Safety. Motorists are now greeted by new stop signs.
Lentswe, Sannieshof - Kea- mogetswe Tshepiso Maano (41) was granted R1 000 bail in the Atamelang Magistrate Court on a charge of stock theft.
She is expected to re- appear at the same court on Wednesday March 23.
Meanwhile, the accused’s husband, who is facing the same charge, appeared in absentia as he is current- ly admitted to a hospital.
“The accused were arrested in connection with a stock theft incident reported be- tween May 15 and 17, 2021.
That was after t he com- plainant reported that 11 of his cattle were stolen from his farm in the vicinity of Atamelang. Shortly after the incident, cattle fitting the description of those of the complainant, were found at a cattle post at Geysdorp with altered brand marks.
“The cattle were impound- ed for further investigations.
Following an investigation by the Sannieshof Stock theft and Endangered Species (STES) Unit, two cattle were identified as those of the complainant. The others were kept impounded pend- ing further investigations.
Consequently, the DNA re- sults came back positively indicating that the cattle belong to the complainant and this led to the arrest of the accused on March 11 this year,” said Col Adéle My- burgh, police spokesperson.
The Provincial Commis- sioner of North West, Lt-Genl Sello Kwena, congratulated the Sannieshof STES Unit members for their commit- ment that led to the arrest.
He said that the police will continue to work hard to ensure that criminals are put behind bars.

According to information presented before the court, Sengwape, then 16 years old, took the girl to an open field (dumping site, situated in Ex- tension 5, Boitumelong, next to the N12) where he raped and strangled her to death.
The accused was arrested af-
ter being handed over to the police by a local pastor whom he confided in that he killed a young girl and left her body in the bushes.
Sengwape made his first court appearance in Septem- ber 2020. Sentencing is ex- pect ed to take place, pending the pre-sentencing report by a social worker.

Lentswe, Rustenburg - The depart- ment of Human Settlements in the North West is determined to ensure that it reduces the housing backlog and fast track the process of delivering houses to legible beneficiaries across the province.
The commitment is part of the reso- lutions take during the recent strategic retreat session held in Rustenburg where the department undertook to up the momentum and deliver on its man- date to close the gap that was created in the past three years.
The department has in the past few weeks crisscrossed the province intro- ducing over 30 contractors to munici- palities, to start on new housing pro- jects or to unblock blocked projects.
One major project that has been on hold for some time is the Bokamoso project in Rustenburg in the Bojanala District. The objective of the project was to bring about sustainable human set- tlement in the area and provide around 4000 fully serviced units. However due to challenges brought by external and internal challenges, the project was put on hold.
The project is part of developing houses around the mining areas and also eradicate informal settlements.
Thus far the department has managed to install internal services and further developed top structures.
According to the departmental acting head, James Mashigo, the department has now taken a decision to install ser- vices first so that when beneficiaries
occupy their houses, they must have full services.
“We have taken a different approach as a department to prioritise bulk ser- vices first to ensure that we hand over houses with full services. We do this in conjunction with local municipalities, mainly because they will have to further take care of those services. We also call on municipalities to work closely with those appointed contractors to ensure that the said projects are completed on time,” said Mashigo.
Mashigo added that remedial actions have been taken on minor issues that were pointed out by beneficiaries dur-
ing the minister of Human Settlements, Mamoloko Kubayi’s visit. He said that Dimakotso constructions has been ap- pointed to complete the remaining 977 sites. In addition to the said appoint- ment, the department is in an advance stage in appointing the developer for 320 units and 200 units which will complete the 1600 units of phase 1 for construction of top structure.
The department has also appointed developers in municipalities such as Moses Kotane where over 2 000 houses are to be constructed. The department has however called on local traditional leaders to work closely with municipali-
ties and contribute to the successful completion of houses for beneficiaries in tribal lands.
Other municipalities that will see blocked projects unblocked and new projects started include, Naledi, Ditso- botla, Lekwa Teemane, Maquasi Hills and others. The department has vowed to turn the province into a construc- tion site and further create more jobs through all the said projects. The de- partment has also committed to put at the helm, Women, child headed house- holds, youth and people with disability in terms of appointment of developers and beneficiaries.

her son and mother-in-law were burned alive. “It was something I will never for- get. Seeing my child like that, the inju- ries were gruesome,’’ she said.
State Adv Mike Mokone urged the court not to deviate from the minimum prescribed sentence as the offence was pre-planned.
He argued that Moeng showed no remorse for his action. In sentencing, Judge Samkelo Gura alluded to the suffering of children, women and the elderly in the hands of perpetrators of
Moeng’s calibre. He highlighted the need for the criminal justice system to protect the most vulnerable people in society.
Jonas told Lentswe she is relieved that the trial is over and justice served.
“Maybe I will now find peace in my heart, I know it won’t bring them back.
It was three long years,’’ she said.
The Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, Dr Rachel Makhari- Sekhaolelo lauded the police and the prosecutor for a successful conviction.
Justice for granny, boy
Lentswe, Kanana - The man who torched the bed where a grandmother and her nine-year-old grandson were sleeping, was sentenced to life impris- onment in the North West High Court this week.
Kagiso Moeng was angry with his ex- girlfriend and when he did not find her at her mother’s home in Kanana Ext 2 that fateful night of March 30, 2019 he emptied a can of petrol in the home and set it alight. The little boy suffered severe burn wounds and was rescued from the home but he succumbed to his injuries three days later in hospital.
Angelo Nkonza’s statement on his death bed was the final nail in Moeng’s coffin.
Moeng maintained his innocence thoughout the trial. He was convicted of the murder of Beatrice Nkonza (62) and Angelo on Tuesday March 15. Sit- ting in the public gallery, was Vuyiswa Jonas, who three years ago was called to the scene of the burning house where
Beatrice Nkonza and her grandson, Angelo, were set alight by a jealous lover.
Safe
disposal of insulin
syringes
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Klerksdorp/
Tshepong Hospital Complex’s Infection prevention and control unit requests people who are getting insulin injecta- bles to refrain from disposing these sy- ringes in normal garbage.
“Disposing of these syringes incor- rectly can or may cause harm to unsus- pecting community members as well as hospital staff even your own family members,”says Tefo Tlali, PRO.
”Needle-stick injuries can cause con- siderable anxiety because of the fear of contracting blood-borne diseases such as HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.”
To avoid disposing syringes incor- rectly, the community is advised or re- quested to do the following:
Dispose these syringes into empty or used cold drink or water plastic bottles.
When the bottle is full, bring them to any pharmacy in either Klerksdorp Hospital or Tshepong Hospital where syringes will be correctly disposed.
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Every year since 2005, POWA has brought women to- gether to write poems, stories and essays that tell of their experiences of abuse and how they triumphed over it, which are collected in the Breaking the Silence anthologies.
The writing featured in the series highlights women’s internal struggles, rape, domestic abuse, alcoholism, unem- ployment, hope, releasing hurt and so much more.
The aim of the POWA Women’s Writ- ing Project is to create a therapeutical and, above all, safe space for women to break the silence on the different forms of abuse they have experienced. It gives women the opportunity to reflect on their lived realities and in the process, positively shape their landscape and influence the thinking and decisions of other women in similar circumstances.
The Women’s Writing Project encour- ages women, through writing, to rid themselves of the shackles of silence, which is often how their abuse is perpet- uated. Due to it giving women a platform to speak out about abuse, the Breaking the Silence Anthology 2021/2022 (Unroped) is a programme of the #EndDomestic- Silence initiative. Launched in 2019, the
initiative is being run by Unilever tea brand, Joko, in partnership with POWA and aims to encourage women to end the silence around domestic violence and increase the speaking out, reporting of, awareness and education around domes- tic violence.
POWA and Joko are calling for submis- sions for the Breaking the Silence Anthol- ogy 2021/2022, entitled Unroped, which is open to women across South Africa. This year, they are seeking poems, short sto- ries and personal essays that tell of your experience of rising and letting go of past pains and hurts. That is, the process of moving on and finding one’s rightful place.
They are looking for entries that envi- sion and dream of a future imagined and defined by you. Writing your own story is a brave, sometimes difficult thing to do. We all have a responsibility to respect and acknowledge bravery, in ourselves and each other.
For details on the 2022 Breaking the Silence Anthology, visit the POWA website on www.powa.co.za and our social media platforms on Facebook: POWA, Twitter:

The deadline for submissions is 31 March 2022.
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Hijacking is rapidly becoming the leading type of vehicle crime in South Africa.
So how do you reduce your chances of becoming the latest statistic? Here are Wynand van Vuuren’s top 5 tips to avoid being hijacked.
BE CAREFUL THAT YOU’RE NOT BEING FOLLOWED
One of the most common places people are hijacked is their own driveway. If you think you’re be- ing followed, don’t turn into your driveway. If the car stays behind you, drive straight to the nearest police station. And even if there’s no-one around you, don’t drive straight into your driveway: if you’re able to, pull up parallel to the road while the gate is opening, so that you have some space to get away if you see a suspicious vehicle approaching.
WATCH OUT FOR CARS SLOWING DOWN
There’s an increasing trend of hijackers stopping suddenly on a highway offramp or busy street.
When you stop, they take your car at gunpoint. Another modus op- erandi is for the hijackers to bump into your car from behind, to make
you pull over and assess the dam- age.
BE AWARE OF YOUR SUR- ROUNDINGS
When stopped at intersections, don’t check your messages or fid- dle with the car radio. Stay alert to what’s happening around you, and watch out for any potential threats.
Keep your windows closed and your doors locked, and leave enough room in the traffic to avoid getting boxed in.
DON’T BE THE HERO If a hijack happens, just give up your car and your possessions.
Move slowly. Keep your hands vis- ible, and don’t look directly at the hijackers. If you have children in the car, tell the hijacker that you’re going to take a few seconds to get them out. Don’t get involved in verbal or physical altercations. Your life is worth more than your earthly possessions.
Make sure that your car insur- ance cover is up to date and that you do what’s required of you.
Also, check whether your policy of- fers emergency assistance, in case anything happens to you, and make sure that you’ve saved the number on your phone.

He passed away on March 8. He was 48 years old.Sebothe was a member of the ANC in good standing and tirelessly built the
party and ignited political life in former Wards 16, 18 and now 10. He became an active member in 1989 when they transitioned.

He was very vibrant in the newly formed SAYCO with the late Peter Mokaba until the resuscitation of the
ANC Youth League. Waist as he was known, was there in 1990 at Springs when Mokaba was galva- nizing youth at the third anniversary of SAYCO with the likes of Parks Mankahlane. He never succumbed to any apartheid forces that were hell bent on destroying political activism and resistance
toward their regime.
Sebothe formed part of the forces amongst fraternal student formations that worked hard to resuscitate COSAS and led a clarion call to start what was called the Back to School Campaign in the late nineties.
He was a true revolutionary who hated factional politics within the movement and embraced unity in all ranks.
