Lentswe, Hartbeesfontein - The man responsible for the murder of a mother and her 12-year-old son ten years ago in Tigane, was sentenced this week.

Galeboe David Khoza re- ceived two life sentences for kill- ing Dipuo Kolobe (55) and her son, Lebogang. The crime sent shockwaves through the com- munity when their bodies were found inside their home on May 29, 2012.

Their throats had been slit.

Following a lengthy investiga- tion, the investigating officer had to reconstruct a case after the information was received about Khoza who was allegedly seen entering the deceased’s home wearing blood-stained clothes.

Khoza was arrested and the blood-stained clothes were also found at his residence in Ext 4,Tigane.

The clothes were taken to lab- oratory for forensic investigation and the results linked him with the crime.

But Khoza disappeared and was eventually arrested six years later in Mahikeng and was de- tained in prison until senten- cing on Tuesday February 22 where he was told he will have to spend the rest of his life be- hind bars for the double mur- der.

Stop and search

Various police units were involved in visible crime prevention operations on Saturday February 19 in

Klerksdorp CBD as well as Alabama.

According to Sgt Amogelang Malwetse, police spokesperson, Transnet operatives worked with the police to patrol railway lines. Police members also conducted stop and searches at local taverns.

Lentswe, Jouberton - Boi- tumelo Richard Mosing was sentenced to 12 years impris- onment for murdering his younger brother, Mosimane- gape Charles Mosing in Jou- berton last year.

The two brothers were in- volved in a brawl when the older Boitumelo stabbed his brother.

He fled the murder scene and managed to evade the po- lice for a year.

Mosing was arrested at Skierlik informal settlement and in custody while awaiting trial.

Boitumelo was sentended on Tuesday February 8 to 12 years imprisonment.

Lentswe, Jouberton - A Jou- berton man who murdered his girlfriend by pouring hot water over her and stabbing her was sent to 12 years im- prisonment.

Mhlupheki Richard To- lomo killed Motlalepule Mat- shwisa (51) in Ext 11, Jouber- ton in October 2020.

They were involved in an argument when he poured hot water over her and stabbed her with a sharp object. She sustained severe injuries.

Tolomo then went to in- form his sisters about their fight. An ambulance took

Matshwisa to Tshepong hos- pital where she later died. A thorough investigation led to the arrest of Tolomo who at some point disappeared from court. He was re-arrested and had to spend the rest of his trial in custody. He was sentenced on Friday Febru- ary 18.

The station commander for Jouberton, Colonel Moses Selepe applauded his offi- cials for ensuring that justice prevail and said that gender- based violence will never be tolerated and perpetrators will face the full might of the law.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The Transvaal Teachers Training College opened its doors to students in 1979, later to be converted to TUT (Tshwane University of Technology) in the new dispensation when most teachers training colleges were closed.

Students held a reunion on Saturday February 19 to pay tribute to their alma mater. The occasion reflected on the pe- riod 1979 to 1981 and the achievements and contributions it made to communi- ties across the country.

One member of the North West

attended, William Mawela. He is the re- tired circuit manager of Matlosana who was responsible for schools in Jouberton, Klerksdorp, Stilfontein and Khuma.

Mawela described the event as “out of this world.”

“It proved that once a teacher always a teacher. Teachers don’t retire and they don’t stop teaching. The event was char- acterized by sharing of ideas on current challenges experienced in our schools and the contributions that we can make to assist OVC’s (Orphans and Vulner- able Children) as well as child-headed

families,’’ he said.

According to Mawela, the fact that the school is the extension of the home was also discussed.

Honouring their alma mater

William Mawela of Klerksdorp, Alpheus Bodiba of Soshanguve and Dr MEC Moleki of Centurion attended the reunion of the Transvaal Teachers Training College.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Four cases of Ty- phoid fever have been reported in the Klerksdorp area since the beginning of this year.

Health MEC Madoda Sambatha con- firmed that two adults aged between 15-49 and two children younger than 14 years old, from Khuma were treated for the illness. Currently, no one is hos- pitalised.

He said that the Centre for Enteric Diseases (CED) at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) which oversees enteric fever surveil- lance activities has alerted the Province that the Matlosana sub-district has a to- tal of 21 laboratory confirmed cases of typhoid fever which were detected from November 2020.

According to the MEC, some of these cases were among illegal miners or Za- ma-Zamas as they are known and some cases were linked to people who had contact with them.

“Of the 21 cases, 16 were caused by the same strain, which indicates a par- ticular source point,’’ he said.

Typhoid fever is a systemic illness caused by a bacterial infection and it can be spread through saliva or conta- minated food or water.

Persons who have typhoid may spread typhoid to others if sanitation is poor.

Sambatha said there is no evidence that drinking water is contaminated with Typhoid. “The Dr Kenneth Kaun- da district municipality tested water around the area and in the affected

Typhoid fever: cases linked to Zama-Zamas

households of the cases. Furthermore, the municipality continues to do water quality monitoring on a monthly basis in Matlosana.”

Public health prevention and con- trol measures:

Hand hygiene: Wash hands with soap and safe water:

n Before, during, and after prepar- ing food

n Before and after eating food n Before and after caring for some- one at home who is sick (especially if

they have diarrhoea) n After using the toilet

n After changing diapers/nappies or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet

Food safety practice: Follow the World Health Organization’s five keys to safer food: keep food clean; separate raw and cooked food; cook thoroughly;

keep food at safe temperatures; and use safe water and raw materials.

Washing hands with soap and water before, during and after preparing food

and before eating, is especially impor- tant.

Using safe water: If people are con- cerned about the quality of water they use for drinking and cooking, then it is recommended to treat the water first by boiling it (place water in a clean con- tainer and bring to a boil for 1 minute) or treating it with household bleach (add 1 teaspoon of household bleach (containing 5% chlorine) to 20-25 litres of water, mix well and leave it to stand for at least 30 minutes before use).
