Lentswe, Orkney - A money laun- dering scheme where a former official of the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District municipality allegedly siphoned money from his em- ployer’s account into his wife and brother’s bank accounts, is one of the crimes an investigating team of the Hawks uncovered.

Six people were arrested on Tuesday May 24 when detectives of the Hawks’ Serious Corruption unit pounced on them in a careful- ly planned operation. The six were traced to different locations and

the investigating team coordinated their arrests so it could happen simultaneously. They were arrested in Johannesburg, Vryburg, Ork- ney and Klerksdorp on charges of fraud, corruption and money laundering worth approximately R2,5 million.

Col Katlego Mogale said one of the suspects was arrested in hospi- tal where he was placed under po- lice guard. He appeared with five accomplices in court.

An investigating team probing the VBS investigation noticed sus-

picious transactions in the account of the Dr Kenneth Kaunda Muni- cipality. According to Col Mogale, further probing revealed that be- tween 2017 and 2019, money was allegedly continuously deposited from the Dr Kenneth Kaunda Mu- nicipal accounts into the accounts of three municipality officials.

“One of the three officials who has since left the municipality would allegedly routinely make payments into the bank accounts of his wife and brother. He re- portedly also routed more funds

into an account belonging to a woman in Johannesburg under the guise of a tender that was awarded. The woman would subse- quently send the money back to him,’’ Col Mogale said.

All six accused were released on R5000 bail each. The matter was postponed to Au- gust 1 for further investigation.

The accused are Nkhensani Ndengeza (45), Mabaso Nazo (39), Rotshidzwa Khaza- mula (37), Vuyelwa Matshangaza (38), Mangaliso Matshangaza (37) and Lazarus Matshangaza (43).

Lentswe, Mooifontein -The North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development commemorated Provin- cial World Bee Day under the theme,

“Bee engaged: Build back better for bees”.

The event took place at Mooifontein on May 18. Currently, the province has 33 active and registered beekeepers of which most have been assisted with equipment and training by the depart- ment.

Beekeepers who attended the Agri- cultural Research Council (ARC) train- ing were awarded Certificates of Com- petence for a course that comprised

of recognising defensive behaviour in animals; observing and handling of ani- mals as well as selecting, using and car- ing for hand tools and basic equipment as well as infrastructure.

On the day, MEC Desbo Mohono handed over five brooding boxes to Ke- nalemang Mooketsi from Lichtenburg who started beekeeping in 2018.

“I am excited about the new equip- ment that I received today from the De- partment. I hope that it will continue to assist many others like myself who are committed to growing in this sector and dedicate their time to their businesses.

“This shows that the vision of em-

powering women in agriculture will be realised through the hard work of MEC Mohono,” said Mooketsi.

Presentations during the commemo- ration day, included Bees and the En- vironment; Beekeeping as a business;

Regulatory Framework on Bee Keep- ing; Marketing, Processing, Packaging, Compliance and Certification.

In her address, the MEC said the De- partment will be behind all farmers who are showing interest in and are keen in their endeavour of improving their lives.

“As a province we are fully behind our bee farmers, and we further prom-

ise that this will not be the last gather- ing of this magnitude in regards to bee- keeping.

“As the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, we have done our research and realised that indeed bee farming is worthy and course for our people.

“As a Department, our intension is clear about bee farming. We intend to mitigate problems our people are fac- ing by creating employment, alleviat- ing poverty in rural communities and providing investment opportunities to small and medium bee farmers,” MEC Desbo Mohono expressed.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - In the budget speech presented in the North West Provincial Legislature by the Mem- ber of the Executive Council (MEC) of Public Works and Roads, Oageng Molapisi, on Tuesday May 24, he said that only 53 km of the unpaved road network in the province can be up- graded in the financial year.

The DA commented that this state- ment confirms that the province still has a long way to go in its goal of upgrading roads across the province

from gravel to tar surface standard.

“The Departmental budget is not addressing inaccessible gravel roads such as the D53, Disaneng and Tshidilamolomo, Weltevreden, Seberia, Mooipan, and Z 205. North West farmers continue to bear the brunt of impassable roads, and eco- nomic development continues to be hampered by this,’’ said Freddy So- nakile of the DA.

Based on the R380 million road infrastructure allocation, only an

average of six or seven roads can be upgraded per annum. “It is embar- rassing, to say the least, and lacks any creativity. The Kouga recycled road is an excellent example of finding and creating solutions to problems,’’ So- nakile said.

The DA believes something must give and will therefore, through the Portfolio Committee of Public Works and Roads in the North West Provin- cial Legislature, seek for an unprec- edented urgent process to petition

the Department, Provincial Treasury, Office of the Premier and National Treasury to discuss the issue of roads in North West and the inadequate budget allocated.

“The government has repeatedly proven that it has no appetite to deal with the road infrastructure issues of the province, and this must come to an end. The Department must present a workable solution that captures its plans to attract the private sector for funding.’’

Lentswe, Klerks- dorp - The Klerks- dorp/Tshepong Hospital Complex held a Nurses Day celebration last week in recognition of nurses’ contribution towards saving lives.

The event was held at Lida Beytell Hall at Tshepong Hos- pital on Friday May 20. The theme for this year’s interna- tional celebration was: “A voice to lead – invest in nursing and respect the right to secure global health”.

The message was also em- phasized by Dr Mpho Dikhing Mahole, Senior Clinical Man- ager, who was calling for the unity of all stakeholders to make the lives of patients much easier with nurses being at the fore-

front.

A motivational speaker, Modo Motswenyane who is also the Hospital Board Deputy Chair- person, paid tribute and con- gratulated the nurses for their hard work.

“Being a nurse is not only about helping patients heal physically, but you also help patients to become stronger as individuals and emotionally and mentally prepared. I say this as a nurse myself not as a board member,” she said.

KT Hospital Complex Deputy Director of Nursing Motsetse Dikane who was also presented with a special recognition cer- tificate, said appreciate the work nurses do despite the lower salaries they endure. They are keeping their heads high for the sake of patients. “Yes, we do get

that you are frustrated, but we must say thank you for not giv- ing up especially in the care of our most vulnerable ones,” said Dikane.

“It takes a really strong and determined nurse to work even in sometimes hard and harsh conditions,” she said. “Nurses’

magic touch makes them amaz- ing people and the most won- derful nurses who are compas- sionate, and dedicated to save lives.”

“Even in this ravaging Covid 19 pandemic we are proud of such patient facing anchors, who voluntarily and courageously, and very bravely as essential service public servants, are will- ing to sacrifice their lives to save others,” said Dr Mpho Dikhing who was the acting CEO on this day.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The man who murdered Speedy Car Sales heir Mo- hammed Dangor will be sentenced next month.

The High Court of South Africa; NW Division, sitting at the Klerksdorp Re- gional Court postponed the sentencing of Confidence Sekgoro (39) to June 20, owing to an incomplete report from the probation officer. Taking the stand in

court on May 12, the probation officer indicated that her report is completed except for the psychiatric report which the defence attorney requested should be attached for sentencing purposes.

She further requested the court to or- der the defence attorney to assist in attaining this report as she is battling to do so. The court granted the order.

count of murder and two counts of at- tempted murder following the shooting at the car dealership in 2019.
