Lentswe, Orkney - Learners of Hoër- skool Orkney protested at the school this week in support of one of their schoolmates, Katlego Mqendlani (21) who is in jail after being caught with an air gun at school.
Katlego is in Gr 12. He was arrested on Tuesday July 26 at the school al- legedly brandishing a firearm. It was later established that the firearm was in- deed an air gun. Learners at the school protested his arrest and detainment because it is only a “fake gun’’.
The learner, who appeared in the Orkney Magistrate’s Court, was denied bail. The case was postponed until Sep- tember 30. This means that he will miss the preparatory exam starting at the
end of August.
On Tuesday August 2 learners at the school were sent home early when some learners blocked the school entrance preventing learners to enter.
In an email to Lentswe, learners expressed their anger saying they are fighting for their rights. “He was ar- rested for playing with a fake gun that the police have proven that it is fake.
There is footage that proves he was not endangering anyone. We come across multiple crimes but no action is taken, yet when a school child plays with his toys it’s seen as criminal activity. Wo- men are being rape, killed, trafficked yet the law fails to do their job. Yes we are kids but we know our rights,’’ they said.
Ibenathi Mlamli, a former learner
said the learners were celebrating their forty days. “Katlego is still in prison for no reason as he didn’t rob anyone or hold anyone hostage, he was just dan- cing with the other learners and they were having fun because they all knew it was a toy gun. They will be wri- ting exams soon and we don’t know the reason for him being denied bail or the reasons for the charges to stick as no one was traumatised and the principal doesn’t want to give the learners any solid information about the case.’’
Capt Afjee Botma, police spokesper- son, confirmed that Mqendlani and another [minor] learner were arrested for taking a “pellet gun” to school. Ac- cording to an informed source, it was a replica of a Beretta 9mm pistol.
Four learners were initially arrested and two released. “The incident took place on Tuesday July 26, and they appeared in court on charges of pointing a weapon in a public place and damage to prop- erty. It is not clear what they have damaged,” Capt Botma said.
“One was released into the care of his parents while waiting to re-appear and the other is spen- ding time at a youth centre in Hartbeesfontein pending his next court appearance.”
Lentswe saw video footage of learners opening fire hoses, spraying water everywhere, run- ning amok, throwing toilet paper around and appearing out of control.
The principal denied comment as he is not allowed to speak to the media. Elias Malindi, spokes-

Lentswe, Jouberton - After the funeral of an Al Qaeda gang leader the dust doesn’t want to settle in Jouberton with the station commissioner of Jouberton SAPS now in the spotlight.
Last week a video circulated on var- ious social media platforms where the station commander of Jouberton is accused of theft of money belonging to members of the so called Al Qaeda gang. The video shows people swearing at Col Moses Selepe, pointing fingers and acting aggressively towards him in- side the police station.
Brig Sabata Mokgwabone, police spokesperson, said the drama at Jou- berton police station last week is con- nected to the arrest of men extorting money from tuckshop owners.
“According to information at our dis- posal, members of Flying Squad were dispatched to Extension 7 on Saturday afternoon July 23, after a complaint was received about men who extorted mo- ney from tuckshop owners. They stopped when they spotted two suspi- cious vehicles - a Toyota Avanza and a
BMW.
“Upon sighting the police, the occu- pants ran away, but two were immedi- ately arrested while the third one was arrested later.
“Subsequent to searching of the vehi- cles, money was found in a plastic bag in the BMW. The men were taken to the police station where they refused to witness or participate in the counting of the money, which amounted to R3 900.
Consequently, the money was registered in the exhibit register and the suspects were arrested for contravention of the Organised Crime Act and possession of dangerous weapons,” he said.
“The station commander was neither part of the team that effected the arrest nor counted the money. However, he granted permission for towing and safe keeping of the BMW. The complain- ants, are therefore urged to lodge a for- mal complaint for investigation.’’
At the time of going to press, no charges were lodged against Col Selepe.
He did lay a charge of assault against the people threatening him.
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The Executive Mayor, Cllr James Tsolela, handed over ten trucks to the municipality’s water and sanitation department to speed up service delivery.
When handing over new trucks on Tuesday August 2, the mayor was ac- companied by MMCs, councillors, and municipal officials.
“The new trucks will be located in the Directorate of Electri- cal and Infrastructure and they will be used to improve service de- livery in Matlosana to curb the challenges of water and sewer spill- ages. The trucks are bought for the com- munity of Matlosana to ensure effective and efficient service deliv- ery by putting people first,” said the mayor.
Tsolela assured the community that the trucks were mainly bought to improve services in the water and sewer sections. He said that the trucks come at a time when the community has been experiencing challenges with water and sewer spillages and are starting to lose faith in services provided by the mu- nicipality. He hopes
that the trucks will be taken care of and that they will be used to serve the com- munity where they are needed.
These ten trucks form part of the 19 vehicles that were bought in March and the two refuse removal trucks that were bought in June. Altogether 31 vehicles were received with five more on the way, the city’s spokesperson said.
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Jairos Chauke (45) was shot and killed in Elandsheu- wel Street last week.
According to Sgt Amogelang Mal- wetse, police spokesperson, it seems like Chauke was ambushed at while enter- ing the gate arriving home. There were two passengers with him in the vehicle.
“Several unknown suspects opened fire on the vehicle. One of the passengers managed to escape while the shoot- ers fled with the victim’s vehicle in the direction of Markotter Stadium. The
victim and another passenger were still inside,’’ she said.
Residents in Elandsheuwel Street said they heard more than 15 shots in rapid succession. Security companies chased the speeding vehicle and more shots were fired. “Luckily no one was injured.
The suspects left the vehicle and ran to the nearby veld where they disap- peared. They are still at large and no arrests have been made yet. The police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder,’’ Sgt Malwetse said.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Mxolisi Ma- tundu (30) is a N6 Business Manage- ment student at Vuselela TVET College in Klerksdorp. He competed at the CoSACSA (College Sport Arts and Cul- ture South Africa) and excelled.
He was the only student to represent Vuselela TVET College (Klerksdorp campus) as the North West team repre- sentative in the poetry category.
“It was on Saturday July 23 when I performed both my pieces, one being the prepared piece where I chose the theme corruption. The second piece was an unprepared one which the adju- dicators chose for us and I was tasked to deal with GBV. The first one was titled To my priest, to my poets and to my people in parliament and the GBV one was What men are we when we claim to be but to love really we find it silly?, both written and performed by myself.
“I ended second when the results were finally announced, bringing home a trophy and two silver medals. Lim- popo took first place and Western Cape took third respectively.”
He took away beautiful memories and a wonderful experience and over and above an impact he never ima- gined to ever be able to make.
“I wish my leaders and those with power and access to resources in our city would just release them to the youth so that they may showcase and partake in such events. Through sport, arts and culture crime and juvenile delinquency is uprooted even before it shows its face to the young.”
Matundu is thankful to Vuselela management, staff and its students who throughout this journey have shown him nothing less of great support.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The Depart- ment of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs convened a session last week with stakeholders across all spheres of government and SOE’s to as- sess the integrated development plans (IDP) of municipalities.
The assessment of the IDPs is in line with the Municipal Systems Act which directs municipalities to produce a single, inclusive and strategic plan. In terms of the MSA, municipalities are expected to align IDPs with national and provincial development plans.
Director responsible for Municipal Development and Planning in the de- partment of Cogta, Mothusi Oagile said the sessions with municipalities were held to develop a standardised IDP structure that will ease referenc- ing between different IDPs created by municipalities, identify gaps and threats in achieving the departmental strategic goal of aligning IDPs with the Provin- cial Growth and Development Strategy.
“This will further link up the integra- tion process with sector departments to ensure integration, alignment between sector plans and IDPs through spatial planning reporting templates,” he said.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - A farmer from Jouberton wants to rescue food from going into landfills and pre- serve it to extend the product’s shelf life.
That is why Rethabile Ngwenya started the Reao-
boka agribusiness in April 2021. She is the director of the company.
She started making chilli sauce in 2021 and in 2022 she went for agro-processing training with the De-
partment of Agriculture with some other farmers.
“The training was held by Thabang Brian Helepi who has a B tech food tech- nology qualification from Department of Agriculture. He taught the group how to process their own sweet potato jam, sweet potato chutney and sweet potato juice,”
she said.
Her chili sauce can now be found at Monate Fast Foods in the CBD and people are loving it. They are also contacting her at home to buy some of the sauce. She in- tends to have her products on the shelves of many other stores in future.
When she started with the chilli sauce, it came as an idea to start crop production.
“I realised that as a farmer if you do not have the market it becomes a problem in which the vegetables will end up going to waste. That’s when I started to make my own Bokang organic spice and chilli sauce and I named the organic herbal spice after my son,” shared Rethabile.
Her recipes are secret, but she gave a hint that the spice contains rosemary, thyme and turmeric.
Look for her Facebook page Reaoboka to see what she is up to.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - North West Health MEC Madoda Sambatha has called on mothers to step up and en- sure they strengthen the immune sys- tem of infants by opting to breastfeed.
“Breast milk provides the ideal nou- rishment for infants. It contains all the nutrients and antibodies that infants re- quire to grow and to ward off illnesses,”
MEC Sambatha advised.
Unpacking the important role breast- feeding plays in combating malnutri- tion and providing food security to babies and infants, MEC Sambatha referenced data from a study conducted by Professor Priya Soma-Pillay, Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynae- cology at the University of Pretoria who Lentswe, Klerksdorp - North West
Premier Kaobitsa Bushy Maape will lead a two-day Provincial Youth Sum- mit which will focus on issues aimed at empowering and developing young people in the province.
The Summit will also see the Pre- mier launching the Youth Advocacy Programme whose agenda will centre on coordinating, monitoring and conducting oversight of all youth in-
terventions and programmes in the province.
The hosting of this Youth Summit was pronounced by Premier Maape in his 2022 State of the Province Address in February and during the Office of the Premier Budget Vote and Policy Speech tabled in May this year, saying its objective will be to align all pro- vincial youth development initiatives into a Provincial Plan in line with the
Integrated Youth Development Strate- gy, this with a view to address the chal- lenges that have faced young people in the past years.
Dubbed “Developing and Empower- ing youth to face the current harsh so- cio-economic conditions”, the summit will focus on soliciting plans from all sectors and develop a three-year Pro- vincial Plan that will be coordina-ted through the District Development
Model approach.
This Provincial Plan will be based on the four pillars, namely - food security, talent development manage- ment, cultural edutainment and entre- preneurship support.
The summit which will be attended by young people from different youth formations in the province, will be held on Thursday and Friday in Rus- tenburg.

BREAST IS BEST, SAYS MEC
cites South Africa as one of the coun- tries in the African continent with low exclusive breastfeeding rates and poor child feeding practices.
“While breastfeeding is common in South Africa, the majority of infants 0-6 months are not given breast milk exclu- sively. This early introduction of other fluids and foods called mixed feeding is responsible for high rates of diarrhoea and contributes significantly to infant malnutrition and deaths,” the MEC cautioned.
The Department of Health together with health professionals, recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life. No other food or liquid is needed during this period. Contin- ued breastfeeding for two years or lon- ger with the introduction of appropri- ate complementary foods is also ideal.
MEC Sambatha further highlighted the critical role played by Breast Milk Bank Facilities located in four districts of the province.
We are proud as a department to have been able to establish Breast Milk Bank Facilities at the Potchefstroom, Mahikeng Provincial, Joe Morolong
Memorial and Job Shimankana Tabane hospitals respectively, as part of a de- partmental intervention mechanism intended to support the breastfeeding systems.
“These breast milk banks act as res- ervoirs for neonates born with very low birth weight and for mothers who are unable to breastfeed due to medical conditions or are unavailable due to death after birth,” MEC Sambatha pointed out.
World Breastfeeding Week is cele- brated annually on August 1-7. The global campaign aims to raise aware- ness about breastfeeding and its ad- vantages, following a surge in the infant mortality rate due to a drop in the number of mothers who opted to breastfeed.
“The Department of Health in the North West province will be embark- ing on a series of awareness campaigns across all districts to amplify the mes- sage to educate and support breast- feeding initiatives. We therefore urge all young mothers and fathers to sup- port these natural nutritious efforts for healthy babies,” the MEC said.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The first N12 Ultra took place over the weekend and it was a great day for road running.
The winners of the 50 km on Saturday July 30 are both from Ethiopia, running for the Nedbank Running Club.
Sintayehu Leges Yinesu won the men’s race in 2:33:52 and Nickey Seger won the women’s race in 2:59:01.
Sintayehu is an experienced run- ner and is a three time winner of the Soweto Marathon. He walked away with R100 000 in prize mon- ey. More than 1 700 runners from all over competed on the day.
The 50 km race started at the NWU McArthur stadium in Potch and ended at the Klerksdorp Re- creation Centre.
The feedback about the event was very ambiguous. Runners complained on social media about hardly any water points, poor traf-
fic control as no dedicated lane was reserved for the runners on the N12 as well as poor administration.
Motorists also complained about the litter that was left along the route.
Vincent Seboko, chairperson, ac- knowledged these complaints and promised that they will do better in 2023. “This was the first N12 Ul- tra. Next year, the race will start in Klerksdorp. We listened to all the complaints,” he said.
“It was a great day for road running and a great day for the province. 2023 will be bigger and better.”
At the gala dinner hosted by City of Matlosana the evening before, Matlosana’s Executive Mayor James Tsolela said the race attracted run- ners from all over the country as well as other countries like Mali, Lesotho and Kenya. He also said it is a welcome boost to the city’s local economy.
