JAILED

Jouberton, Lentswe - The community united to help a local senior citizen who was left homeless after her shack burned down last week.

Sekao Catherine Batsitsing (69) of Ext 17 was staying with her five grand- children, who were playing outside with fire when the shack caught alight

and burned to the ground.

The granny was left with nothing and slept in the toilet while the chil- dren stayed with neighbours - then the community started to help.

They contacted CAPM African Precious Metals shaft 7 at Orkney’s management and the manager, Isaac

Teboho Tshabalala, came to her aid. They donated all the material to build a new shack and also donated clothes and groceries.

The new shack was erected just be- fore winter set in and now the family have a roof over their heads.

LENTSWE The deadline for Herbalists/Healers is 16:00 on Tuesday.

NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED!!

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - A traditional healer was arrested in La Hoff after he ripped off a KZN man who thought the

“doctor’’ could multiply his pension.

This off course, turned out to be a scam. According to Sgt Amogelang Malwetse, police spokesperson, the pensioner (55) met the traditional hea- ler in Randlespark where his consulting rooms were located.

“This man convinced the pensioner to sell his car. The pensioner then handed the con artist R16 000 as well as his laptop, tv and two cellphones so he could cleanse them from evil spirits.”

What’s more, the traditional healer showed the pensioner a blue trunk filled with money, saying his pension money will also fill the trunk.

“The pensioner took all of his money (R550 000) and put it inside an empty trunk. The healer then gave him the keys to the trunk and told him to come the following day to collect the locked trunk and take it to his place where he would come and open it after a week.’’

Doing everything he was told, the pensioner waited in vain for the tra- ditional doctor. When he eventually opened the trunk he found it filled with

paper.

Lawrence Semio Keffa Matova (44) was arrested in a flat in La Hoff. He was remanded in custody pending further investigation. The case was postponed until Monday 7 June.

“It is all lies and deceit”

According to Sgt Malwetse this is not the first time this has happened to vic- tims in Klerksdorp.

“Targets are mostly women in their 50s having stable jobs in both public and private sectors with long employ- ment services. The suspects would then start a relationship with them, promis- ing them marriage and convince them to resign from their jobs, claim their pensions and bring it to them to multi- ply using their traditional powers - only to rob them.”

These criminals masquerade as tradi- tional doctors who promise to make you rich in a short space of time.

They change and amend their tricks from time to time when they notice that the old trick is no longer working for

them.

Previously their modus operandi was to ask the victims to come to their consulting rooms to consult. The con- sulting rooms were divided by a curtain where they will be made to listen to voices coming from behind those cur- tains and made to believe those voices were of the victim’s ancestors who would be promising to multiply their money and make them rich.

“As we usually warn the public, those voices are of these scammers’ accom- plices. They first check the language spoken by the victim, then look for an accomplice that speak the same lan- guage just so victims can believe that it is truly the voices of their ancestors,’’

says Sgt Malwetse.

The other modus operandi is to ask victims to buy a white cloth with which they would wrap the pension money with. The victim is then told to close his eyes for prayer and during the prayer the con artist shift the money and replace it with paper. Afterwards the client is told to only open the white cloth after 7 days. During that time the doctor will disappear and surprisingly, all the victims never even have a photo

of the suspect even though they were in a relationship. They can also not even furnish the police with their names, ad- dress nor registration numbers of their vehicles making it difficult for investi- gation to take place.

Currently, their current modus oper- andi is cleansing their unsuspecting vic- tims telling them to bath, drink coffees which they claim will cleanse them from evil spirits, they even demand their val- uable belongings such as TVs, laptops, vehicles, cellphones etc for cleansing them - only to disappear.

“We would like to request the public, especially women, to wise up and be vigilant.”

“’These criminals rob them of their lifetime savings, leaving their families destitute and hurt. Never let anyone tell you to resign and give them your pen- sions for multiplication, that is a scam.

If it is too good to be true,do not fall for it,’’ Malwetse said.

The police would like to request peo- ple who opened fraud/ theft cases like this to contact Detective Sgt Keobiditse Thupe on 018 464 5069 or come to of- fice 116,1st floor, Klerksdorp Police station.

Lentswe, Jouberton – The sad news of the death of Jack Velile Macwela spread like wildfire through Jouberton.

The much loved brother, husband, friend and comrade drew his last breath on 29 May. “We knew Comrade Jack from our youth when we as comrades joined the liberation struggle when it was not fashionable to do so. He be- longed to the generation of young lions who were politically conscious, a gen- eration that openly resisted apartheid oppression and repression,’’ friends wrote in a tribute.

He was detained without trial under internal security Act for almost two months until his acquittal at the Klerks- dorp Magistrates court in August 1986 together with the likes of the late com- rades Joseph Mabutho, Andrew Moipo- lai and Joseph Danxa who is still alive.

“He understood the costly sacrifice of the liberation struggle in which no ma- terial offerings induced him to choose to serve the people. He was a selfless revolutionary. It is not surprising that in his profession he continued to commit himself to the terrain of the struggle for better education. He became a beacon of courage and motivation to young people at that time.”

Cde Jack started his career as an ed- ucator at Zamukulunga primary school in 1991. Later he became the Head of Department and ultimately the Princi- pal. In his career as the principal, his main focus and passion was to capac- itate learners with skills of becoming reputable and respected members of the society. Under his belt a number of graduates, entrepreneurs and aca- demics were produced. He resigned from the teaching profession in 2013 and returned to the fraternity in 2016 where he was employed as an educator at Tiang primary school till his untime- ly death.

He assumed his duties at the school teaching Maths in Grade 5 and Natu- ral Sciences in Grade 7. He improved the results of the grades tremendously as though he has not been out of the system for a while. He joined SADTU in 1991,where he was elected the secretary of former Greater Klerks- dorp SADTU branch. He became the chairperson of the Greater Klerksdorp SADTU branch and was instrumental in advocating for Educator unions recog- nition as stakeholders in the education sector.

From 2006 to 2013 he was the Dep- uty Chairperson of SADTU JB Marks

Jack Velile Macwela.

A tribute to a life well lived

Region. He led the most difficult wage strike of 2006 and 2010 which was characterized by unrests and disobedience where teachers in the history of SADTU experiensed leave without pay for more than 3 weeks.

He is a former chairperson of TYRON THOMAS ANC branch, Matlosana sub re- gion. He also participated in the process of establishing the Matlosana ANC Veterans League with the likes Oom Stan Phakade, Ziri Tom, Mme Pinky Poe and many others.

Comrade Jack was an activist, a unionist, a leader, a patriot, and an educationist, a sharp thinker, a true comrade who surren-

dered his life to the cause of all humanity.

A principled revolutionary, who abhorred corruption to the core. He served his people with dignity.

He served in various community structures to mention but a few, one of them being MATLOSANA ACTIVIST FORUM from 2006 -2018, as a coordinator of the structure, during this period he was critical about the slow pace and lack of service delivery in our municipality. “Go well cadre, revolutionary, son of the soil we will continue to learn from your teachings and courage. Lala ngo Xolo Comrade.”

Scam alert

Lentswe, Mahikeng - “It has come to the attention of the North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Develop- ment that some bidders are contacted by fraudsters alleg- ing that they have been sent to collect monies on behalf of chairpersons or directors for bids they have tendered for in order for them to get their appointment letters.”

This is according to Emelda Setlhako, spokesperson.

“The scam involves the fraudsters using departmental letterheads, disguised as department’s representative to send out fake appointment letters to unsuspecting suppli- ers and service providers.”

The affected bids are 13 DARD 027/2020: Supply and delivery of fencing material at different livestock centres;

and 13 DARD 034: Supply and delivery of bulldozers, low- bed trailer, trucks, mounted water-well, drilling ring and refrigerated truck for the department.

“All stakeholders that have received fraudulent letters are urged to report the matter to law enforcement agencies without hesitation and to inform the department of such activities.

“The North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will never send e-mail asking service provid- ers to supply equipment and goods/services without an of- ficial purchase order number,” she concluded.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - City on a Hill Church just built a whole extra building for kids, youth and commu- nity.

According to pastor Mark Bailey, they built it cash in the midst of Covid-19.

“We were led to build. Deacons and elders agreed in January last year. We then shared the news with the church

in February, but when Covid came in March, we thought we would have to cancel. We just kept going with no money,” he said.

“Little by little we now have a build- ing that can accommodate more than 300 kids and that’s a tool for the task.

We see our facilities as a blessing for schools, home schoolers and training for worldwide ministry. On Friday

nights we have more than 80 young people in this new building and we are pressing on for greater things. So many impossibilities have been made possible over the last 12 years of City on a Hill’s existence and only God can do this.”

“We still don’t understand how everything came together, we are just thankful,” Bailey said.
