Off-duty offi cers nab rape suspect
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Three off- duty police officers worked together to get a Jouberton rapist behind bars this past weekend.
The 32-year-old rape suspect was arrested at his parent’s home where he raped a primary school girl the previous day. According to Brig Sa- batha Mokgwabone, police spokes- person, the rapist met two young
girls, aged 11 and 12 years old at the Tower Mall. He offered them a lift in his Mazda and took them to his par- ents’ home in Ext 22. “He raped one of the girls and luckily the other one managed to escape. She returned to the house on Sunday morning to get her dress back but the rapist chased her away,’’ he said.
Unbeknown to him, the girls told
people what happened who in turn informed their parents. “According to information, one of the girls’ fa- ther then told a police officer who is on vacation leave. The member fol- lowed up and sought assistance from two other police officers who were on rest days. The three traced the suspect and eventually arrested him at his place on Sunday June 5. Inves-
tigation into the matter continues,”
Brig Mokgwabone said.
The Provincial Police Commis- sioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena applauded the police officers for working together to get the rapist behind bars.
The suspect was expected to ap- pea r in the Klerksdorp Magistrates’
Court on Tuesday June 7.

CBD thief jailed for
stealing cellphone
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - A CBD pickpocket was sent to jail for stealing a cellphone.
Tshepo Stanford Khumalo (25) was sentenced to three years imprisonment in connection with common robbery he com- mitted in the Klerksdorp CBD in November 2021. His victim was a 61-year-old man.
Sgt Amogelang Malwetse, police spokesperson, said Khu- malo lured his victim to his vehicle saying that it was broken into. “He walked with the man to his car and when the victim realised that nothing was wrong with his vehicle, the thief grabbed his cellphone that was in his shirt pocket and fled in the busy CBD,’’ she said.
Members of the public who witnessed the theft, managed to catch Khumalo and he was arrested. They handed the victim back his cellphone.
The investigating officer opposed bail and Khumalo was in custody until he was sentenced in the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday June 6.

Lentswe, Ottosdal - Macbeth Nqobo (47) appeared in the Ottosdal Magis- trate’s Court last week after he handed himself over to the Hawks for alleged theft of pension money worth approxi- mately R2.3 million.
This comes after the Hawks uncov- ered a scam called ‘’push-push market- ing’’. According to Capt Tlangelani Rik- hotso, spokesperson for the Hawks in North West, a pensioner was allegedly approached by her female friend who convinced her to invest in “push-push marketing”.
“The friend allegedly took her to a house in Mahikeng where they met sev- eral men who introduced themselves as traditional healers. The alleged tradi- tional healers reportedly prayed for the pensioner and called upon her ances- tors to bless her,’’ Rikhotso said.
She was allegedly informed that she would double her money within four days of investing her money. The pen- sioner subsequently transferred R2.3

million into the account provided and waited four days for her money to dou- ble. After four days, she tried to get in touch with her female friend to no avail. That was when she went to the police who reported the matter to the Hawks. The Mahikeng based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit probed the matter.
According to Rikhotso, the pen-
sioner’s friend, Irene Godfred (40) and Hakim Mphoza (35), both from Uganda were arrested in Mahikeng for theft and each released on R10 000 bail in April. Nqobo appeared in court on June 2 and was also released on bail.
All three of them will appear in court together on July 12.
“More arrests cannot be ruled out,’’
Rikhotso said.
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The murder trial of Joseph Phage (38) accused of murdering a 10-year-old school girl will start in September.
Both the state and the defence at- torney from Legal Aid confirmed they are ready for the trial at the pre-trial in the High Court of South Africa; North West Division sitting at the Klerksdorp Regional Court.
Phage is in police custody after he abandoned his bail application. He is facing four charges that include murder, attempted murder, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and kidnap- ping. He was arrested on November 8 last year after the body of his ex-girl- friend was discovered inside his shack in the Sonderwater informal settlement in Ikageng.
He is accused of kidnapping Kamo- gelo Sithole at her primary school in Ikageng. Following the child’s disap- pearance, the mother reported a case of kidnapping at the local police station.
He was arrested but failed to disclose the whereabouts of the child. Her life- less body was found the next day hid- den under the bed at his home.
According to Henry Mamothame, NPA spokesperson, the National Prose- cuting Authority (NPA) has assigned Adv Benny Kalakgosi to ensure that justice is served in court. Phage will remain in police custody until the trial starts on September 12.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Masenki Joseph Mosokotsane (52) and Tuweng Isaac Taje (54) were arrested for fraud, theft and possession of counterfeit notes during a crime intelligence led operation in Potchefstroom last week.
Apparently the accused were conspiring to commit fraud at Potchefstroom Post Office. One of the accused allegedly trans-
ferred money (R30 000) from the victim’s account into his.
He was arrested soon after the transaction.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The High Court of South Africa: NW Division, sitting in the Klerks- dorp Regional Court post- poned the sentencing of Thabo Thakampane (27) to June 27.
He was found guilty for murder and six other offences commit- ted in April 2019 in Klerksdorp.
Thakamphana and Katleho Ramuthalane (33) were both charged for murder and kid- napping. However, Thakam- pane pleaded not guilty to all charges and his trial was sepa- rated from Ramuthlane’s who

Lentswe, Orkney - Problems with water supply and sewer- age spills in Orkney are a daily occurrence.
DA councillors Chris Bester and Johan Bornman field numerous complaints daily by residents who are fed-up
with service delivery problems in this town. Residents have signed a petition demanding that their right to water supply be adhered to.
This week again residents in parts of Orkney woke up with no water in their taps. “It is
a daily occurrence,’’ said Cllr Bester. This time the problem was sorted within hours when they found out that the circuit brake at the pump station broke down causing no water flowing into the reservoir. As soon as this problem was fixed
No water, sewer spills plague Orkney
water supply was restored.
Another huge problem is uneven water pressure causing some households to run dry early in the day
Residents of Aqua park, Vaal View Flats, Leipoldt, Langen- hoven, the lower parts of
Chaucer, Burns and Byron Streets up to the Midtown, as well as Brook, Jennings and Bacon, Belock and Binyon Street are constantly without wa- ter. If they have water the pressure is so low that they cannot even shower. Bosveld Park and Orkney Vaal are at times days without water.
Investigation by Bester noted that the pressure is usually 3 bar and much lower where it must be at least 4 bar plus. He said this is due to the pumps and valves not subjected to regular maintenance causing it to not handle a pres- sure of 4 bar.
According to Bester, the waterworks in Orkney need an ur- gent upgrade and full
time security on the premi- ses.
“It is a recipe for disaster with two water towers not working plus the problem of the ring feed running along Charlotte Maxete Street that have been out of commission for more than a year.’’
Adding to the water prob- lems are constant sewer spills in Orkney. Bester said the sewerage plant (Ward 29) is constantly pumping raw sewer- age into the Schoonspruit. The pump stations in Scott Street as well as the Bird Park are out of commission with the sewerage running down the street or into the veld.
The sewerage problem in the town centre (opposite KFC) almost two years now is getting out of hand.
“The back yards of houses are constantly under sewer- age. The town is drowning in stench,’’ he said.
The impact of inadequate sanitation management result- ed in golf competitions being cancelled, customers leaving boarding houses not to men- tion the impact it has on the environment, water contami- nation and resulting health problems. Residents asked for a response within 14 days.
Tambaai killer to be sentenced
pleaded guilty to robbery with aggravating cirmcumstances and kidnapping.
Ramuthalane was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for robbery and a further 5 years for kidnapping. The court fur- ther declared him unfit to pos- sess a firearm. The two sentenc- es were ordered to run concur- rently. The court also ordered that the 23 months he stayed in police custody while await- ing trial be factored into his jail term. The charges derive from the murder of tambaai driver
David Mahlapa Sekhola.
On the early morning of April 14, 2019 Thakam- phana, Ramuthalane and a third suspect who is still on the run, were at a tavern in Kanana when they decided to go and drink in the CBD in Klerksdorp. They asked Sekhola to take them to town and he agreed, telling them it would cost them R150. Sekhola was with two friends at the time, Mthakathi January Vicane and Fezile Kraai.
Along the way, Thakamphana and friends decided to dis- embark near Vaal Ma- seru. In his confession, Ramuthalane said that upon stopping the vehi- cle, Thakamphana shot Sekhola in the head and
they robbed the driver and his friend. They took their belong- ings which included his King- dom of Lesotho driving licence, keys, a wallet with cash, USB sticks and a cellphone.
Following the murder and the robbery, Ramuthalane con- fessed that he removed Sekhola from the vehicle and they drove off to an unknown location with Vicane and Kraai. The two kid- napped occupants then man- aged to escape when the vehicle approached the railroad. They then ran back to where Sek- hola’s body was dumped and found the police at the scene.
They told them what hap- pened and a search was con- ducted. The vehicle was sub- sequently traced through its tracking device to a house in Bophelong near Vanderbijl- park. Thakampana was arrested while Ramuthalane and the third suspect managed to out- run the police but Ramuthalane was apprehended in Kanana the following day.
The Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West applauded Adv Kalakgosi and Warrant Officer Menzile Sokh- wemba on securing a favourable judgment to all charges. “Seri- ous and violent crimes need to be rooted out of our communi- ties and we hope the perpe- trator will receive a sentence suitable to the offences commit- ted,” she concluded.

Lentswe, Mahikeng - The North West Department of Human Set- tlements will after completing an audit of all blocked projects across the province, complete 247 as a plan to eradicate the challenge in the province for this financial year.
The MEC for Human Settle- ments, Lenah Miga, made the announcement when tabling her department’s budget speech vote at the provincial legislature recently. MEC Miga informed the legislature that after traveling throughout the province she was greeted by incomplete structures dating back many years and some of these structures are re- pairable while others need com- plete demolition and rebuilding.
“This backlog is influenced by different aspects which includes:
Non-performance by contrac- tors; a hike in the costs of mate- rials; and the non-increasing of the housing quantum. For that my department has prioritised unblocking of blocked projects and make sure that those legible receive what is due to them,” the MEC said.
She added that the National Department has after conside- ration, managed to increase the quantum by 20.9% from R116 867 to R141 200 and the applicable subsidy commenced as April 1. According to the MEC this shows that the department remains consistent and more determined to continue and
improve service delivery in the province.
The MEC further outlined the department’s commitment to eradicate the ever increasing number of informal settlements especially around the mining towns in the province. She said that her department will fast track the process of upgrading informal settlements across the province to ensure provision of housing.
The MEC however said that, it is not all settlements that will be upgraded. Others are planned to be upgraded within the Medium Term Expenditure Framework through the Informal Settle- ments Upgrading Partnership Grant.
