Lentswe, Khuma - Rebecca Tshuma grew up in Khuma and recently won gold at the National WorldSkills Com- petition.
Her township story is one of resil- ience and sheer determination. Becca as she is called, will represent South Africa later in the year in France.
She started the competition in the provincial preliminary levels in Brits last year under the supervision and mentorship of one of her lecuturers, Collins Ngomane. She won the provin- cial rounds and went on to participate in the national competition that was held in Durban. She won gold after vigorous skills tests and competition in CAD (Computer Aided Design).
The international leg of the compe- tition will be held in France in October
2022.
Becca is a go-getter and graduate of Taletso TVET College who received numerous distinctions in her studies.
She started her school life in Ha- ta-Butle primary school and later went to Borakanelo Secondary School in Khuma.
Growing up she always wanted to be an engineer. She started studying Me- chanical Engineering and enrolled in a course called Engineering and Related Design. “Growing up we were never ed- ucated about other professions besides being a teacher, doctor, lawyer etc. So as a child I was very curious to know and learn more, that’s where I was inspired to do something different, different from what we are taught,’’ she said.
According to her it is always challeng-
ing to learn something new. “You stum- ble a bit at first and it’s so frustrating when you fail to get it right at first, but with the love I had for learning the programme, I became patient with myself. It was not smooth sailing and I encountered many bumps along the way, however I remain proud of myself for persevering through CAD,’’ she said.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Police have been maintaining a high visibility in Jouberton to ensure general safety since the murder of Al Queda gang leader Andile Ndamoyi who was buried on Sunday July 24.
According to the police, a few sporadic incidents were repor- ted as well as intimidating and misleading voice notes and vi- deos were circulated through various social media platforms in the Kosh Area. On Monday July 25, Col Adele Myburgh from SAPS said that twenty people were arrested for various offences.
A shooting at a tavern in Ext 23, increased the tense situation in the township over the week- end when a tavern owner was shot and wounded in a robbery just before midnight on July 23.
Eight robbers threatened pa- trons and fired a few shots ran- domly, before robbing some of them of their cellular phones.
When the 42-year-old tavern owner refused to open the cash register, he was shot in the stomach. No other injuries were reported. “The robbers pro- ceeded to break open a burglar door, leading into the owner’s house and after a search, took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled to a nearby field where they got into two vehicles, a white Toyota Quantum mini bus
and a white bakkie,” said Col Myburgh. Anyone with info that can assist the police with the investigation can contact the Investigating Officer, Warrant Officer Mangaliso Mosiea on 072 476 4679.
Three more suspects aged be- tween 32 and 38 were arrested at Extension 2, Jouberton on Saturday July 23, after going around tuck shops collecting money for the “after tears’’ for the slain gang leader. The sus- pects were carrying dangerous weapons. They were charged with racketeering.
Another man was arrested for brandishing a firearm during the funeral procession, said Brig Sabata Mokgwabone. The operation also resulted in the arrest of five suspects at Exten- sion 13, for intimidation and drinking in public.
A Toyota Yaris vehicle, that was hijacked at Stop 5, Exten- sion 2, was found abandoned along the N12 near Alabama and handed back to the lawful owner. It was also reported that in order to avert violence, the police used rubber bullets to disperse members of two rival gangs.
The police are maintain- ing their presence in the area and parents are urged to allow children to go to school. “Law abiding citizens are requested
to continue to respect the rule of law, carry on with their daily businesses, not to take part in any illegal activities and to re- port any acts of intimidation or threats to the police,’’ said Col Myburgh.
The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant Gen- eral Sello Kwena strongly cau- tioned that lawlessness and criminality will not be tolerated.
He said further that those who dare the law, will be dealt with harshly.
Meanwhile, investigations into the murder of Ndamoyi are still underway and no one has been arrested. Two men that were brought in for question- ing last week have since been released.
MORE CRIME
In an unrelated incident on Sunday July 24, two sus- pects, aged 32 and 39, were arrested for illegal possession of a firearm and possession of eight suspected stolen cellular phones. The latter items were linked with cases in Sannieshof, Atamelang, Madibogo and Ma- hikeng.
In Orkney, five suspects were arrested for attempted murder and unlawful possession of am- munition on July 23. That was after the suspects, who allegedly shot at the police, were found in possession of 511 rounds of ri-

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The police in Christiana held a joint roadblock with Provincial Traffic on the N12 road between Chris- tiana and Bloemhof last week.
“At about 15:00 on Thursday July 21, a white Ford Figo was stopped and searched.
“During the search, 13 bullets were found wrapped in a plastic bag, inside a bag in the boot of the vehicle. Furthermore, a hunting rifle and numerous dan- gerous weapons were discovered inside the vehicle, leading to the
arrest of all four occupants,’’ said Brig Sabata Mokgwabone, police spokesperson.
Mat David Maloyi (47), Joa Onan Masson (49), Roger Mot- sasele (52) and Joel Msimango (28) appeared in the Christiana Magistrates’ Court on Friday July 22 for possession of a fire- arm and ammunition without a license as well as possession of dangerous weapons. They remained in custody until their next court appearance on Mon- day July 25.
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - An Ethiopian na- tional was sentenced for employing an ille- gal foreigner.
Collaborative efforts by the police and Home Affairs officials led to securing of a conviction and subsequent sentencing of an Ethiopian national, Duramo Fikre Tadelle (42), on Thursday July 14, by the Makwassie Magistrates’ Court to a fine of R20 000 or ten months imprisonment of which R10 000 or five months were suspended for a period of five years on condition that the accused is not convicted for contravention of the Im- migration Act.
“The sentencing emanates from an inci- dent in which an illegal foreigner from Le- sotho was found working at Tadelle’s tuck-
shop in Lebaleng, Makwassie, in October 2021. A case was opened against the illegal foreigner and the employer. Consequently, the illegal foreigner was sentenced to a fine of R3 000 or sixty days imprisonment, which she paid and was later deported to her country of origin. She was further de- clared an undesirable person in terms of the Immigration Act,” said Brig Sabata Mokg- wabone.
The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant Sello Kwena, lauded the investi- gating officers, Sgt Duma Mdledle, as well as immigration officers, Pitso Matshediso, Lebogang Mokolobate and all those in- volved, including prosecution for securing the conviction.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - A Jouberton man who watched as his lover and her sister burn to death after he poured a flammable liquid inside the bedroom they were in before setting them alight will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Judge Mahlangu said Tshediso Koetsi (44) showed no remorse for his crimes before sentencing to two life terms on two counts of murder, an accumula- tive 50 years for attempted murder, three years for arson and three years for malicious damage to property. He was sentenced in the North West High Court sitting in Klerksdorp on Monday July 25.
On the tragic night of April 3, 2021 Koetsi went to Keitumetse Mjijwa’s home in Jouberton. Her sister, Dineo Mjijwa with her three children as well as another adult and three more chil- dren were at the home that evening.
Testimony was heard that Koetsi argued with her and accused her of cheating on him.He left, but returned on two occa-

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The family of Vincent Jika (32) who was shot near Kanana last week, is in the dark about
his death.
According to Orekeng Jika, his brother was shot in Kanana near Vaal Maseru by an unknown man last Wednesday July 20.
“He was not in- volved in any of the gangs or any other group. He was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. He was returning from the cemetery. We would like to know what happened,” he said.
Sgt Amogelang Malwetse, police spokesperson, confirmed the shooting and said the police are investigating murder. The funeral will take place at X8720, Ext 10, Kanana at 07:30 on Saturday July 30.

sions argueing with Keitumetse outside the home. When he returned the third time, he entered the home and poured a flammable liquid in the bedroom before setting it alight. Keitumetse and her sister both sustained serious burns and later died in hospital.
Dineo’s three children, aged between 5 and 13, also sustained injuries and two other children was also wounded and taken to hospital. Koetsi sustained minor burns and when the police ar-
rived at the scene, he actually showed it to them, claiming that Keitumetse tried to burn him. He was arrested after po- lice investigations pointed to him as the perpetrator.
Adv Xolisile Philisane argued that Koetsi’s offence was premeditated and urged the court not to deviate from the minimum prescribed sentence of life imprisonment. Judge Mahlangu, agreed with the state, and alluded to Koetsi’s actions as having a long-lasting
negative effect on the children, as the experience will affect their lives forever.
The Judge also alluded to the responsi- bility the criminal justice system has in dealing harshly with cases of gender- based violence and femicide.
The Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, Dr Rachel Makhari- Sekhaolelo, lauded Adv Philisane and the IO, Sgt Itumeleng Moreo, for their collaboration in ensuring a successful conviction.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - North West Premier Bushy Maape commended Harmony Gold for its forthcoming in- vestment in its Klerksdorp operations.
Premier Maape said the investment will preserve much needed jobs in the province.
“The unemployment rate in our province is standing at around 35%
and this situation is unsustainable.
Hence our drive to engage with dif-
ferent stakeholders to see how best we can deal with these challenges and in particular bring these numbers down.
“Our engagements with the private sector are encouraging because invest- ment is continuing and this will assist us in dealing with the scourge of pov- erty and unemployment confronting our province,” the Premier said.
The management of the mine has indicated that more than R7 billion
will be spent on two capital pro- jects.
These include Zaaiplats which is an extension of the existing Moab- Khotsong operation which will see the lifespan of the mine extended by a further eighteen years, preserving over 6 000 jobs.
The Kareerand expansion project will increase the lifespan of Mine Waste Solutions by 16 years creating
various socio-economic opportunities for locals.
Chief Operating Officer Beyers Nel:
“Responsible Stewardship is our first strategic pillar at Harmony.
“Through our collaborative efforts with government, we can truly demon- strate what it means to be a good cor- porate citizen, addressing the many socio-economic problems confronting our host communities.”
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The only way to stabilise Matlosana’s finances is to implement the financial recovery plan proposed by the DA.
This was the words of Cllr Johannes le Grange, DA Caucus leader in the city, after the news that Eskom attached the municipality’s bank account in a bid to recover more than R1 billion electricity debt.
“The DA has repeatedly warned the ANC government of Matlosana that the financial situation is dire and proposed an implementable, thorough financial recovery plan, but the ANC chose to disregard our constructive engage- ments.
“Matlosana is a delinquent debt of- fender, having deliberately failed to
honour its R400 million payment agreement with Eskom to reduce the debt burden two years ago, which now puts the delivery of services at risk,’’
Cllr Le Grange said.
The financial recovery plan in- cludes:
Improve revenue collection. Ap- proximately 80 000 accounts are not being serviced and debt recovery should be implemented and services should be suspended to delinquent ac- count holders;
The roll-out of prepaid electricity and water meters;
Establishment of a special task team to drastically reduce electricity losses, illegal connections and investi- gate municipal employees implicated in
Lentswe, Mahikeng - The North West Provincial Government through the Department of Public Works and Roads has launched a Zero Tolerance Drive Against Potholes.
Over R120 million has been set aside for the project which is currently in full swing in all four districts of the munici- pality.
Premier Bushy Maape maintains service delivery must top the agenda of government amd said this will create a conducive environment for businesses to thrive.
“We are taking an approach of zero tolerance against potholes in our pro- vincial roads across all four districts.
The maintenance of this infrastructure will unlock various economic opportu- nities for locals as well as attracting in- vestment. Once investments trickles in we’ll be able to respond to challenges of poverty and unemployment confront- ing our communities,” the Premier said.
MEC for Roads and Public Works Gaoage Molapisi insists the initiative also seeks to give impetus to the District Development Model where different spheres of government pull all resourc- es to address service delivery challenges in the province.
“The department has crafted a pro-
gramme and collaborated with mu- nicipalities to systematically deal with potholes in all provincial roads and municipal roads. Over forty rehabil- itation, potholes patching, resealing, regravelling, and blading projects will be undertaken to improve the quality of our road infrastructure network,” said MEC Molapisi.
The roads earmarked for the initia- tive include:
D2541 Mooibank road in the JB Marks Local Municipality.
P 137/1 at Khuma in the City of Klerksdorp Local Municipality.
P 50/1 from Moruleng to Legkraal in Moses Kotane Local Municipality.
P 117/1 and R507 Voortrekker Road in Tswaing Local Municipality.
Furthermore, a total of 295,8 kilom- eters in Kagisano Molopo Local Mu- nicipality will be patched. This includes 141 kilometers in Naledi Local Munici- pality as well 162 kilometers in Greater Taung Local Municipality. And a fur- ther 196 kilometers in Mamusa and Lekwa-Teemane Local Municipalities.
Thirty-four projects will be out- sourced for rehabilitation and main- tenance. The project is envisaged to conclude its work by end of September 2022.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Criminal syndicates are changing the way they hijack victims.
According to Duma Ngcobo, chief operating officer for Track- er South Africa, as vehicle tech- nology has improved, with many cars now having a ‘push to start’
button, criminals had to adapt.
He highlighted the recent shifts in hijacking trends, in- cluding the increased use of key re-programmers and signal grab- bers.
Criminal syndicates change their modus operandi all the time, he said. Trends also change frequently based on location - for example, there are more hijack- ings taking place in Johannes- burg while there are more car thefts in Pretoria.
“One of the things that has happened, unfortunately - and 2020 was a real game changer - was that the probability that people are ordering stuff to be delivered to their homes has in- creased significantly.”
Because of this, Ngcobo said that people are now being target- ed when they wait at their gate for delivery, with the gate being blocked by a criminal, allowing them to gain entry into the prop-
erty and access to vehicles.
He added that criminals take advantage of victims outside sporting events on the weekend, while they are unaware or dis- tracted. Hijackers take advan- tage of their victims when they are most relaxed, Ngcobo said, urging South Africans always to be alert and aware of their sur- roundings.
This includes taking note if someone is driving behind you and making similar turns, as well as sharing your location through- out a journey with loved ones or being in the car with someone when driving at night.
The latest data published by the South African Police Ser- vice (SAPS) shows that every 25 minutes, a vehicle is hijacked in South Africa. In the main metros of South Africa, between Janu- ary and March of this year, there were 5 402 hijackings.
When it comes to vehicles and vehicle types that are targetted by hijackers, bakkies continue to be high on the list for the probability of getting hijacked, Ngcobo said.
Security company Fidelity’s recent data shows hijackers most often targeted Toyota and Volk-
swagen vehicles, with targetted models including: Toyota Hilux, Volkswagen Polo, Toyota Quan- tum and Nissan NP200.
Netstar said in June that hi- jackers are increasingly using jammers in public places such as malls, gyms and other high- traffic areas or outside ATMs.
The company offered the fol- lowing tips to stay safe and pre- vent a possible hijacking:
n Take note of similar vehi- cles: Hijackings are often well planned. The target is followed for days before the incident;
therefore, take note if you see the same vehicles that keep popping up on your daily travels.
n Always report any suspicious activity immediately to your local neighbourhood watch or security company.
n Don’t just drive into your driveway: Be cognizant of what vehicles are around you, and if a vehicle has been taking the same turns as you, do not just drive into your driveway.
n Keep moving: Try to have someone open a gate for you if it is not electric, and if it is, try to open it for the minimum time possible with the least stationary time in your vehicle.
Good news for petrol
prices
Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) has welcomed the re- duction of international petroleum product prices, including crude oil prices.
The price of Brent Crude oil is hovering around 105 US dollars per barrel, a reduction on average of about 10% compared to the average pricae for June 2022. Government has for the past four months cush- ioned South Africans from the vagaries of the oil mar- ket and the full impact of the high international oil prices.
A temporary reduction in the general fuel levy of R1.50 per litre was introduced. This was reduced to 75c per litre. In a statement, the department said:
“Despite this reprieve coming to an end on August 2, the department can confirm that there will still be a sizeable reduction in fuel prices including paraffin for South Africans”.
A formal announcement in this regard will be made by the end of the week. As was undertaken in April 2022, consultation on the introduction of the price cap for 93 Octane fuel has formally been initiated. This price cap will allow for the fuel suppliers who can pass the benefit to the consumer to do so.
The department said no disruptions were expected in the fuel market as 93 Octane accounts for a small portion of the market, however this will allow the de- partment to monitor how the market will react to the capping of the price.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - SAPTU has welcomed the power-crisis plan to deal with South Africa’s electricity challenges.
President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday July 25 announced a series of emergency measures to deal with the country’s electricity crisis.
“We are looking forward to see how this plan will be implemented and that it brings an end to the electric-
ity crisis and the repercussions of this crisis,” said Adv Ben van der Walt, the South African Parastatal and Tertiary Institutions Union (SAPTU’s) general secretary
“Getting the private sector involved and getting rid of all the red tape for private projects are two of the pieces of good news,” according to Van der Walt
“From our perspective it is good
news to see the doors being opened for the private sector to get involved and private projects for electricity generation. We must use the intellec- tual capital we have available.”
Another positive to the President’s announcement is the fact that he stayed away from declaring a state of emergency due to the electricity crisis. A few institutions and parties have called for a state of emergency,
but Ramaphosa did not bow to these pressures and for that SAPTU is also thankful.
“We know the challenge for the Es- kom management is massive and a dif- ficult task only gets more challenging when internal forces work against you, but we at SAPTU believe the current Eskom management is the team that will bring about the change needed,”
he concluded.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The bikers of Cancervive concluded their three-day miniride in the Kosh Area last week.
The cavalcade stopped at Vaal Reefs Technical High School, the Oncology department at Klerksdorp Hospital, Tshedimosetso Secondary in Jouberton and Bolt & Engineering in Uraniaville.
According to Charmaine Rider of Cancervive, their stop at the Kanana Community Centre was a special one;

“Cancer does not discriminate due to your age, race, gender, socio-economic status etc,’’ she said.
The ride was powered by Siemens.

Cancervive is a unique and dynamic cancer awareness and education pro- ject. It is a survivor-driven cancer awareness and education project that communicates to audiences with means
beyond words. Through the use of per- forming arts, music, poetry, dance and storytelling, we are able to reach people of all backgrounds, regardless of lan- guage.
The Cancervive campaign members share their stories, celebrate life, and recognise that a cancer diagnosis does not have to mean a death sentence.
Cancervive also honours those that have lost their battles, and raise funds to help fight the disease.
Cancervive aims to educate commu- nities about “shy” cancers that many are unwilling to talk about due to stigmas and discrimination, cultural taboos, and lack of knowledge. By sharing the stories of diverse survivors, they aim to break down the taboos surrounding the disease, and develop support structures necessary to begin conversations about cancer. The visited communities are left with the tools to identify the warning signs of cancer, and to better under- stand and care for cancer patients in their midst.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The North West Provincial Commis- sioner, Lt Genl Sello Kwena, condemned the incident where a motorist is defending himself against a group of thugs in the CBD.A video of what transpired on Wednesday morning July 20 just a few metres from the Home Affairs office in Klerks- dorp went viral on social media.
In the video, approximately five men can be seen attempt- ing to either rob the victim or hijack his white SUV vehicle parked in OR Tambo Street.
The man, armed with what appeared to be a knife, coura- geously fights back until the men gave up and left.
The videographer was sitting in her vehicle, waiting for her husband who was in Home Affairs at the time. She filmed the altercation and published it on Facebook.
“I saw everything, I was so scared for them. They [the rob- bers] circled the car like preda- tors looking for prey. This man did everything to defend his wife who managed to climb into the car and lock herself inside. He took out a knife or a machete or something and swung it at them. I was so scared, I can’t even imagine how she was feeling,’’ Ledimo Thato told Lentswe.
Col Adele Myburgh, police spokesperson, said they traced the victim who declined to open a docket. “Sadly, this is the second incident wherein the complainant refused to open a case. In an similar incident that occurred in May, the complainant also refused to open a case even though the suspects, who allegedly robbed him, were identified,’’ she said.
The victim has since broken his silence and said he has lost trust in the criminal justice system and the police.
In another separate incident that is recirculating on so- cial media platforms, a police officer stationed at Klerksdorp can be seen grappling with a group of males. This happened on July 13 in the Klerksdorp CBD. The officer had to take out his firearm to scare away the apparent attackers, who hurl insults at him. “Subsequent to the incident, a case of assault and crimen injuria was re- gistered and a suspect was arrested. However, the case was not enrolled pen- ding further investigation,’’
Col Myburgh said.
The Provincial Commis- sioner expressed his dis- pleasure of incidents such as these. He indicated that deployment through va-
rious operations including vis- ible patrols in the Klerksdorp CBD, is a priority for Provin- cial and District management to ensure the safety of the community.
The General also urged the community to work together with the police in the fight against crime through recog- nised structures.
Moreover, he emphasised the importance of registering cases when these incidents oc- cur to ensure that perpetrators are identified and brought to book.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Banyana Banyana are the new queens of the continent after coach Desiree Ellis’ brave charges beat hosts Morocco to win a maiden Women’s Africa Cup of Nation (WAFCON) title at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium last weekend.
The team have arrived back in the coun- try since winning on Saturday July 23.
It was a tightly-contested final but in the end, the SASOL-sponsored South African senior women’s national team brushed aside the intimidating atmosphere created by the massive home support in the stands to win the match 2-1.
After a goalless first half, Hildah Magaia put Banyana Banyana in the lead when she beat Morocco goalkeeper Khadija Er- Rmichi with a clinical finish in the 63rd minute following some good work on the left by hard running Jermaine Seoposenwe.
Magaia was not done and completed her brace with a tap-in in the 71st minute,
again Seoposenwe being the main architect of the goal.
But Morocco fought back and pulled a goal back through Rosella Ayane in the 80th minute but it was a question of too lit- tle too late.
It had been years of heartbreak for the South African senior women’s national team after finishing as runners up five times, but the agony evaporated into the Morocco skies after the final whistle.
It was a glorious night for Banyana Ban- yana as Andile Dlamini walked away with the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award at a ceremony held on the pitch moments before the official handover of the trophy to the new champions.
Banyana Banyana were also named as the women’s National Team of the Year and SAFA president Dr Danny Jordaan was on hand to receive the title from Confede- ration of African Football president Patrice Motsepe.
