As \Yill be observed, the Yessel is quite unli.ke those shown iu a preYious study (Curson, Thomas and Neil~, 1833), being made of bamboo. Of particular interest are (a) the strengthening of the base with the skin tu,ken from the limb of an ox, (b) the thin loop of hide by which the utensil is hung upsicle do,Yn "·hen not in use, aud (c) the comltton native pattern of triangles llecorating the top half.
'rhe base of the pail is inserted into the skin " sock " or rather
" mitten " usually taken from the forearm or lmn~r thigh, wl1en moist, so that when it dries it acts as a firm ~upport.
The larger milk pail is made from a calabaoh ('ul~tl.-Pktca), both of ,,·hich are kept far cle;me1· than by Jlati,·es in thP ~llh-continent,
particularly the Dan1aras.
Other Central African tribes, e.g. 1\rakinga, also use the bamboo pail.
