East London Philatelic Society

The Pretoria Philatelic Society held its usual fortnightly meeting on Monday, January 15, and despite the bad weather a good attendance resulted. The hand was down for a paper, which possibly accounted for the good attendance, but unfortunately his "hinges were muted". In other words, he was bedridden with an attack of gout.

The issue is composed of eleven values, in single colors, of vnryi11g shades, as follows:. ld., grey-black on thin grey-white paper. A variation worth noting in this issue is the existence of a small dot in the center of the tail of the left-handed animal that supports the coat of arms.

Postage Dues

There is no doubt that they are genuine and were used in the early days when postage rates were high. It has been a long time since copies of the 1/- were found with the reverse watermark, but recently a few more have come to light and could be obtained from one or two post offices along the Reef, including Benoni, Florida, Belgravia and Hillbrow.

Natal Society; Cape Town Philatelic Society; The East London { Philatelic Society; Philatelic Society of Port Elizabeth and the West. This is certainly a step in the right direction, and it is to be hoped that the Society will begin to fix their JJiouse and revive some keenness in the old. A new drilling machine has recently been installed and we understand that other machines are on order.

Prizes were awarded to male and female students for different classes, and the young people who participated showed commendable enthusiasm. At present the printing office is very overworked, and the lack of machinery makes his task difficult.

Another correspondent mentions that she has received a sheet of ½d where the word "Africa" is only in the last horizontal row. We have been informed from a very reliable source that the current stamps will be overprinted with one of the following: "R.G SELF-GOVERNMENT" or "RESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT." Due to the space occupied by the last overprint, we could imagine one of the first two proposed overprints appearing.

NEW ISSUES AND VARIETIES

ALLEN,

THE ST AMPS OF BECHUANALAND

The Protectorate's postal department was administered by the Postmaster-General of the Cape Colony, who found it convenient to keep stocks of Protectorate stamps in Mafeking for distribution to the post offices further north. H is not difficult to see a connection between these varieties of stamps and the composition of the Mafeking garrison.

PENNY POSTAGE

Due to its proximity to the Transvaal, it was inevitable that Bechuanaland would experience the full effects of the Boer War. A total of five Ca,pe, four British Bechuanaland and five Protectorate stamps were overprinted with different denominations, and of the Protectorate stamps two were overprinted with a different type.

This had the effect of leaving the ends of the perforation grooves free of the rule, and was an effect produced intentionally to overcome a technical difficulty of the printing press. As the ink rollers moved along the surface of the plate under pressure and applied the necessary ink, they forced the air along the gutters between the stamp devices on the plate and due to the complete surrounding of the plate with the Jubilee line, this air had no natural outlet and caused problems with the inks .'.
