Comparison of the nine-point Beighton hypermobility score between males and females.

Hypermobility syndrome (HMS) is observed in joints that extend beyond their expected range of motion. Results showed that from the total population, 25.17% of female subjects were at risk to only 11.04% of males.

Algemeen aanvaarde benaminge soos Bindweefsel Oorerflikheid Sindroom is bekend daarvoor om eienskappe te vertoon wat nouliks ooreenstem met skaarser, beter bekende sindrome soos Marfan en Ehlers-Danlos sindrome, asook Osteogenese Imperfekta. Onlangs is die meer algemene ‘alles insluitende’ diagnose vir hipermobiliteit bekend as nie-kwaadaardige gewrigshipermobiliteit- sindroom gebruik. Individue wat geen sensasie van pyn in hul gewrigte ervaar nie maar steeds oormatige soepel gewrigte het word eenvoudig beskou as hipermobiel. Tans word verstaan dat hierdie geneties-gebasseerde sindrome voorkom waar bindweefselproteïene, soos kollageen, verskillend vorm. Dit veroorsaak dat die gewrigte, spiere, tendons en ligamente baie meer soepel en broos is as in gesonde individue. Die doel van hierdie studie was om moontlike verskille te ondersoek in die voorkoms van nie-kwaadaardige gewrigshipermobilileit-sindroom tussen mans en vrouens (ouderdomme 18–25). Die populasie (55%-mans en 45%-vrouens) het bestaan uit 180 universiteitstudente en 300 individue van ’n fisies meer aktiewe populasie. Al die persone is getoets volgens die 9-punt Beighton kriteria vir die diagnose van nie-kwaadaardige gewrigshipermodiliteit-sindroom, soos voorgeskryf deur die hipermobiliteit-sindroom assosiasie.

Tellings van 4 uit 9 en meer dui die moontlikheid van nie-kwaadaardige gewrigshipermobiliteit- sindroom aan. Resultate het gewys dat van die totale populasie van 480 individue, 25.17%

vrouens en 11.04% mans tellings van 4 uit 9 en meer gehad het. Hierdie verskille kan moontlik wees as gevolg van die hormonale invloed op die soepelheid van tendons en ligamente.
