South Africa is a key state in the security structure of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Currently, very few of the key drivers of the South African security agenda have their roots in the human security domain.

Promoting psychological adaptation among navy sailors

To achieve the promotion of operational adaptability – either during or after a maritime mission – the IMM has developed a predict and promote (P&P) approach, to be implemented as part of the mobilization and demobilization program of ship-based maritime operations. Regarding assumption 2, the stability of the ER measure – the stability of the ER profiles at different times are shown in Tables 1 and 2.

Hypersonic weapons and the future of nuclear deterrence

Second, the failure of missile defense coupled with the reduction of the reaction time of nuclear states encourages the preventive use of force. I first consider the challenge posed by hypersonic weapons to missile defenses, then consider the possibility of the preventive use of nuclear weapons, and, finally, reflect on how the dual-use nature of hypersonic weapons presents insurmountable challenges to nuclear deterrence. The second argument that informs this claim, essentially, that the failure of missile defenses, coupled with the reduced response time of nuclear states, encourages the preemptive use of force, is equally flawed.

This claim stems from two arguments: first, the speed and maneuverability of hypersonic missiles would make existing and future missile defenses obsolete; and second, the failure of missile defense, coupled with the reduction in response time of nuclear states, encourages the pre-emptive use of force – in short, second strike forces can be destroyed before they can be deployed. Against this gloomy assessment, a thorough appreciation of the strategic effects of nuclear weapons leads to optimism that nuclear weapons can continue to exert their deterrent effect in light of the development and deployment of hypersonic weapons. The second argument underlying this claim – that the failure of missile defense combined with the reduction in response time of nuclear states encourages the preventive use of force – appears to be a more serious argument.

The hype about the harmful effects of hypersonic weapons is overblown in many ways.

The German Attack on the Witboois at Hornkranz, Namibia, April 1893

It was essential that the author be familiar with weapons and ammunition of the time as well as with the historical setting. Thus was the need to have some insight into the larger European politics of the time (Grosse Politik), i.e. They then arrested one of the elders of the church and tied him to the bullock cart.

It is difficult to make a convincing reconstruction of the battle from the available archival sources. Considering the lay of the site and the evidence of cartridge cases, the. It was during this period that he received the Mauser Gewehr 88 carbine, which he keeps in German archival photos from the early 1900s.

The South African National War College military history staff ride as a deep learning

In light of the above, this article deals with the personal driving of military history as an immersive learning experience. On another level, the similarity of the Prussian army exercises with the modern historical headquarters drive is that the Ministry of the Army. However, personal driving also involves the application of operational art theory that relates to the current SANDF doctrine of warfare.

A staff trip focusing on the Northern Cape, the eastern Free State and Lesotho was also organised. The student also critically analyzed the validity of operational art theory based on the given case study.344. The personnel journey described above contributed to the critical analysis of the behavior of historical commanders, using the theory on operational art as its measure.

The Relevance and Role of the Battlefield Tour and Staff Riding Tour for Armed Forces in the 21st Century Introduction”.

A reassessment of the tank battle between 4th Armoured Brigade and Panzerregiment 5 during

While logistically assigned to 30 Corps, the 4th Armored Brigade remained under the operational control of the 8th Army in the initial stage of the battle. on map 2), just a few kilometers to the south and equidistant from the other two regiments, while the brigade headquarters and support were in the center of the position. There is no evidence in the primary record of the battle being fought at closer than 700 yards.

The established view of the battle is that the German tanks of the Stephan Group defeated the 4th Panzer Brigade with minimal losses on 19 November. Based on available evidence from both the German and Allied sides, it is highly likely that German tank losses on 19 November were underestimated, challenging this traditional view of the battle. Ratels on the Lomba: The story of Charlie Squadron

As the only element within 61 Mech capable of destroying opposing tanks, Charlie Squadron found themselves at the forefront of the attack. One of the critical doctrinal challenges facing many African armed forces is the frequent absence of a unique and Africanized body of military knowledge. The integrity and cool-headed professionalism of Meiring as head of the army at the time made an important contribution to stabilizing the transition process in South Africa.

Armed with an MSc degree from the University of the Free State, he gave up an academic career to join the South African Armed Forces. To rise as a signal officer and eventually become the Chief of the Army is an achievement in itself. His time as Chief of the South African Armed Forces was also probably the most difficult and turbulent period in the history of the country.

The other major contribution is the historical light the book sheds on perhaps the two most difficult challenges he faced as chief of defense before 1994.

The opportunist: The political life of Oswald Pirow, 1915-1959

He advocated and was a leading cabinet member in the Fusion Government between Hertzog and Smuts. His Germanophilia extended to speaking exclusively German at home, and his daughter declared in 1939 – to the consternation of the British press – that her father felt more German than South African. The book's title, The Opportunist, adequately describes Pirow's burning ambition, which was the driving force behind all his political moves.

Not only is Pirow remembered as a Nazi sympathizer, but the blame for the poor state of South Africa's military preparation on the eve of World War II is firmly laid at his feet. Pirow's poor performance in building and maintaining the Union Defense Force was a result of the Great Depression and the generally inadequate approach most Western governments had to rearmament in the interwar years rather than his own incompetence. The author reveals that Smuts used Pirow as a scapegoat for the plight of the Union Defense Forces and destroyed his parliamentary career in a series of parliamentary debates, which forever labeled and ridiculed Pirow as the inventor of the infamous "Never Bush" .

Pirow's "bush wagon strategy" confronted Germany's rearmament program that included the emblematic, modern and deadly Blitzkrieg Panzers.

Gunship Over Angola : The Story of a Maverick Pilot

Interestingly, as Wessels notes, military enthusiasts have always had an insatiable appetite for special operations literature.460 It is surprising that such enthusiasm has not extended to the excitement and liveliness of the war in the sky. The role of the SAAF, particularly the experience of the airmen, has been largely absent from South African historiography. The next day he traveled to the Airborne Operations Center for his first operational tour, which is covered in the second half of the book.

The first half of the book is dismissed in the title, despite this half's value as it opens a rare window into the rigors of becoming a SAAF pilot, which involves much more than practical flying hours and adrenaline-fueled aerobatics. As previously noted, the book is divided into two parts; the first is titled “The Age of Innocence,” followed by “Time to Grow Up.” In such cases, the students had to sit on the roof of the wash block, which was “mathematically calculated.

To "add authenticity to the simulation," the students had to "imitate the noise of a radial engine."

The Battle of Bangui

The inside story of South Africa’s worst military scandal since Apartheid

The first phase is dominated by journalism and war reportage, which is followed by official histories in the second phase. Then followed Thompson, Hofstatter, and Oatway's 2021 edition, which supersedes Heitman's earlier version of events. If one follows Van der Waag's analogy, then these two publications definitely fall into the first phase of the cycle of military historiography.

These authors would need to have access to the secret information withheld from Heitman, Thompson, Hofstatter and Oatway, and their role would be to offer a more complete, pro-government and pro-SANDF version of events. Hopefully in the future we will also see the publication of some personal and regimental accounts of the Battle of Bangui, which will in all likelihood be followed by a more critical academic response. Thompson, Hofstatter, and Oatway provide an unparalleled account of the Battle of Bangui, full of heroism, camaraderie, terror, grief, and triumph over adversity.
