One of the controversies and gaps of the South African War is the unequal distribution of food rations during the siege of Mafikeng and the cessation of food rations in the concentration camps. Some of the black Africans in the camps were apparently treated fairly by their masters.

A positive psychology perspective on pre-deployment fitness-for-duty evaluations

A proposition for the South African National Defence Force

Discipline-specific information is only available to practitioners of the discipline registered in the system and to CHCP. The focus of this study is, however, on the use of CHA as a pre-deployment screening process.

Examining support of South African Defence Force conscription by the mainstream Afrikaans sister

The theological underpinnings of support from conscription churches are discussed in the next section. NHKA leadership indicated that they should act proactively in the interest of preserving the Chaplain Service. As an additional challenge to the SADF, the GKSA decided to reject the SADF's rank structures in principle.

In addition, the implied subordination of the needs of the church to the needs of the SADF could be questioned. The three sister churches often had discussions at various levels about their interaction with and support for the SADF and the chaplaincy.

Zambia Army

These findings indicated that the majority of officers and soldiers felt that they had a thorough knowledge of the ethics of war. It was clear that most officers and soldiers had at least a basic understanding of the ethics of war. The study found that 74% of the officers and soldiers of the Zambian army showed a positive attitude towards war ethics.

The proper application of war ethics by most officers and soldiers of the Zambian Army was observed. This would indirectly strengthen the ability of officers and soldiers to acquire knowledge about the ethics of war.

The intelligence battle in the Gulf of Guinea

Espionage and counter-espionage operations in Spanish Guinea

The inclusion of the Spanish colony of Guinea among the main targets attracted the intelligence services of warring European countries to the Gulf of Guinea. The German construction site duly attracted the attention of the intelligence services of France and England. Michie was in charge of reconnaissance missions on Fernando Pó Island on behalf of the SOE missions in Lagos (Nigeria) and Freetown (Sierra Leone).

This caused a cycle of fierce underground warfare led by the colonial branches of the intelligence service in Fernando Pó's Spanish territory. Actions by SOE, SRI and OSS contributed decisively to limiting the German project of recapturing its former colonial possessions.

Historical reflections on the deterrent effect of the death penalty on capital crimes in South Africa

Lessons from 1917–1995

It follows from the case that the youth and political motives of the accused did not constitute mitigating circumstances in the sentencing decision. Execution patterns, as shown in the statistics in Figure 1, reveal very little about the deterrent effect of the death penalty on capital crimes. This is due to a limited amount of data that can be used to determine the deterrent effect of the death penalty for capital crimes.589.

He suggests that there is a lack of statistical empirical evidence for the deterrent effect of the death penalty. Therefore, most studies on the deterrent effect of the death penalty lack empirical evidence to come up with conclusive results.

A Russian on commando

The Boer War experience of Yevgeny Avgustus

This is a clear indication of the passion he and his fellow men had to fight for the Boer cause. While reading the book, one's imagination begins to paint pictures of the events highlighted in the book. Another central aspect of the book is the issue of food rationing during the war.

I was especially pleased that Gorelik mentions the meaning of the war at the beginning of the book. Towards the end of the book we learn more about the Russian corps and the poor military tactics the Boers used which caused them to lose the war.

Mpho Manaka (Maripane)

Foreign nationals came from places like Germany, France, and Russia to participate in the war. The writer notes the creation of the Russian Corps as an act to correct the "uncoordinated" Boer military systems and techniques that existed at the time (p. 160). The pictures used in the book are a good addition to portraying the characters mentioned and the various units that volunteered for the war.

No, he wanted to learn the military tactics of the Boers and the operational systems of the British, because he was convinced that one day a war would take place between Russia and the British. Overall, I appreciate that Gorelik added some additional notes to clarify certain aspects, especially the abandonment of the memoir, or rather its sudden end.

A general’s bold strategy in the Kruger National Park

The reader will note some of the cautionary tales of purchasing military-grade equipment and services. In the book, Jooste boldly tackles the specter of corruption within the park and ranger corps and its insidious control over staff. Human rights and support for guards and their families are strong in Jooste's opinion.

History will, as expected, judge the success of Jooste and his team's work by the rhino poaching statistics. In conclusion, the book provides a unique set of insights highlighting the man behind the story and the challenges conservation faces in the face of the onslaught on wildlife worldwide.

Ashwell Glasson

It's a refreshing sight in the conservation world, where most field supervisors have traditionally been drawn from poor communities bordering protected areas such as the Kruger National Park. As many famous anecdotes point out, a general is only as good as the battles he wins and the loyalty of his subordinates. Objectively, the statistics began to decline sharply in 2016, but later the success of Jooste's strategy caught the attention of then Environment Minister Edna Molewa, who acknowledged that the work done by Jooste and his team could be adapted for use elsewhere.

To the reviewer's knowledge, no other books have been published on this subject. Nevertheless, Jooste discusses how poaching can be countered by using a hybrid of paramilitary concepts, training and law enforcement theories, which have been through the crucible of harsh application.

Surviving the secret war in Angola

McFarlane discusses these issues with an honesty not found in many of the stories of soldiers who took part in the Frontier War. These feelings were exacerbated by a growing sense of bitterness and a sense of betrayal at the way he and his comrades were treated by the authorities. It shows the naivety of young trainees, the anxiety, insecurity and fear of young soldiers in a war not of their making.

The sometimes squalid existence at the so-called 'border' also comes into the spotlight: the lack of food, water, cigarettes, hygiene, mail from home and other comforts. He tells his story (which he calls a 'memoir' rather than an autobiography due to the unreliability of memory) chronologically in short chapters against the backdrop of political unrest in South Africa.

Gert van der Westhuizen

But McFarlane's story is also the story of so many other soldiers who had fought in this and countless other wars. The challenge of a strange and dangerous environment with its flies, mosquitoes, snakes, spiders and seemingly nonsensical Permanent Force officers and non-commissioned officers still evokes a peculiar sense of nostalgia today. The book not only deals with McFarlane's first period of military service, but also with some camps he had to attend later in his life.

It will also provide valuable material for historians who wish to further investigate the daily existence of conscripts and so-called 'campers' in the Border War, their feelings and their mere struggle for survival. McFarlane's story, like those of so many others yet unheard, is worth telling.

From exile to exoneration

Instead, a fellow by the name of Mbeko was wrongly identified for destroying the APC. The rest of the comrades who participated in the uprising were sent to Quibaxe and Pango. In Dar es Salaam, the group wrote a document detailing their experiences at the hands of the ANC entitled A Failure of Democracy: The ANC Security Department in the 1984 Umkhonto we Sizwe Uprising.

Despite his disappointment, however, Dyasop felt vindicated due to the findings of the commission that the ANC was responsible for gross human rights violations. Out of Quatro is an important addition to the history of the struggle for liberation.

Harold Gillies, the Queen’s Hospital, Sidcup and the origins of modern plastic surgery

The importance of such collaboration between individuals not only in the medical fraternity (and yes, most of them were men), but also in other disciplines forms another sub-theme in Faces from the front. In contrast, the images in Faces form an integral part of the discussion. The inclusion of photographs, sketches and even the occasional photograph elevates the content of the book to the next level.

Despite my initial skepticism, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of medicine, including historians and other academics of the social sciences. Postgraduate students will also benefit from taking note of the well-written and structured introductions and conclusions of each chapter, even if they are not interested in the subject.

Anri Delport

It further humanizes the experiences of these men while simultaneously illustrating the overall importance of medical achievements during this period by including visual sources. Beyond that, Bamji deserves the recognition and award he has already received, as he helped bring the hidden faces of these people back into the annals of history. As Bamji himself notes, even the official history has faded and has limited mention of the treatment of facial injuries.

As late as 2002, many foreigners in Sidcup and the surrounding areas would have been ignorant of the significance of the opening of Gillies Pub by the care home residents housed in the converted Queen's Hospital.601 However, the situation has changed a lot in recent years. as literature, such as Faces of the front, have gradually restored this chapter in history to public consciousness. Blindness and the Power of Inner Vision: The inspiring story of Mike Bowen and Lil Gillies who met in the aftermath of the Great War.
