Reicblin, the chairman of the society, ably carried out the duties of D.C., a sisted by Ii s D. Greenberg, i\li s l''. Kahanovitz ancl 1\Ir. '. Legntor, a~ M.C.s, the la::;t-named gentleman acting also a. hon. secre- tar\ and trea urer.

Mrs. N. Kirschner presented the prizes, in addi- tion to twelve autographed photos of Mr. Maurice

Since the election of the new committee the Young Israel Society has been doing fairly well.

On July 7th Mr. Solomon Belfort read a "Journal"

to a very appreciative audience of Young Israel Society

members. This Journal was so successful that it is hoped to bring it out every month.

Prior to the reading o:f the '' Journal , '' prizes ·were presented to the winners of the recent tennis tourna- ment as follows :-Ladies singles, 1iss Solomon·

Gentlemens singles, l\fr. Bi hko; mixed double:, Miss Solomon and Mr. Price.

On July 29tl:.. a successful hat debate \Vas held in the 'ynagogue. The members ·bowed keen interest, as very many put forward their view. on the <lifferent

~mbjects debated.

This month has begun well. On Saturday 11th a members' evening

held in the S.O.E. Hall.

Dancing was indulged in until midnight and a mo:5t enjoyable eveuing ended with the si?Jging of "Hatikvah.:'

A very interestinCT debate on the question " Will Palestine solve the J ewisL Question '' was held with the ,Jewish Guild, on unday 12th. The debate was keen ancl the Society's side won the day.

The Society has start eel a fortnjghtly Jewish Hi::;tory Circle. This at present is not very big, but it is hoped that it will increase and prove beneficial to the memberi;;.

There wu n fair attenchmce of members at the se' enth semi-annual general meeting of the loC'al Young I rael Society, in the Hebrew -,d1ool, on the 5th inst:mt. The pre"ident, Mr. . Simler, having opened the meeting, and the minutes of the previous general meeting having be n read and confirmed, the treasurer's balunce sheet W<1s adopted, and the chair- rnnn then delivered his report, which was well received.

Rev. :\fr. Silverman spoke of the harmony existing in the society's rank , 'vhilst Mr. Simler, en., urged the members to do everything possible in the interests of the Zionist Movement, which looked to them as its future '''orker . Rev. Silverman then took the chair.

During the past few months tbe locnl Pirchei Zion has been verv active. The first function after the half-annual general elC'ction was a lecture deliYered by Mr. M. to Young Israel. Accordingly, a. special general meet- ing was called on the 2nd July, and was attended by a very large audience. Amongst those present was l\Ir. Zuudelsohn, the founder of the society, who said that, a the pioneer society, they should not change their name. It vms also argued that the existing name was appropriate to a society of young people.

On Tisha B'Av the selling of National Fund stamps was undertaken by Misses B. Danilowitz and M. Burstein, ancl by Mr. Heyman, who realised a substantial a.mount. The bi-monthly collections are Iegu1arly undertaken, and the collectors have been very succec:sfol The society has also sent a donation of fhe guineas to the Lightning Drive Campaign on behalf of the Russian orphans.

On Sunda.y afternoon, August 5th, an inter- debate between the Germiston Y.I.S. and the society wa held.. The subject '"as '' Is it possible for the Jews, under present conditions, to establish a National Home in Palestine? " The visitors sup- ported the motion, the propo er being Mr. Friedman, seconder Mr. Godin, and the opposition was taken by l\Ir. Frack, opposer, and Ur. Jacobs, seconder. Some very interesting arguments \Yere put forth, both by the debaters and the audience, and on the vote being taken the affirmative side was successful by a large majority. In the evening a successful dance was held in the Communal Hall, the proceeds going to the Keren Havesod. There was a lnrge attendance, and the arrangements were very well carried out. The able D.C. wa Mr. L. Heyman, the M.C. 's being Miss Danilowitz and Mr. Frack, and music was supplied by the l\Iisses Joffe. A substnntia1 sum was realised, the net resul being £15. The society wishes to tender sincere thanks to Mrs. M. Ca-plan, who so kindly super- vi._ed the refreshments, to all those who supplied the latter, and to Mr. Phillips and Mr. Teren for their ass; stance during the e.vening; ah10 to Misses Schrager and Goodman, and Messrs. WaJlach and Horwitz, for playing the extras. Before closing with the singing of " Hatikvah " and " God Save the King," Mr.

Jacobs macle a short speech, thanking the public for its generom~ support.

The eighteenth semi-annual general meeting of the Young Zionist Society was held on June 24th in the Hebrew Schoolroom, Mr. B. Benjamin (president) being in the chair.

Re\ . .J. Levine deJiyered a short address on the meaning an<l name of " Zionism " and congratulated the members on the keen interest they took in the societv's "·ork. The Chairman, after thanking Rev.

LeYin~ for his n.dclress ::mil for his assistance to the , ociety. stated that the society had done another good six months' "·ork, and expressed thanks to the officers and fommitte" for their Rervices.

Robertson.

On Sunday, July 29th, the nnn ual general election of the ~o_ung Isra.el Society took place in the Checler, the retJrmg chairman, Mr. l\I. Hurwitz, presiding.

After the president's report had been read, the election 0£ office bearers for the ensuing year took place with the following results :-President, Mr. M. Hurwitz (re- elected); vice-president, Master K. Hoffman; hon. sec- retary, Miss R. Sandler; hon. treasurer, Miss E.

Groll; committee, l\fisses A. Hoffman and M.

Schochet, and Masters K. Sandler and S. Hurwitz.

~ library has been started by the society and is provmg a success.

Worcester.

The annual election of the Junior Society was held o~ July 1st ~n the. Zionist Hall. Before proceeding with the mam busmess, a resolution was passed to purchase five trees in the Herzl Forest, and an enrol- ment of new members took place, whilst arrangements

were completed for the forthcoming inter-debate with the Robertson Young Israel Society at Robertson.

Mr. I. J. Senitzky having been appo·inted acting

chai~an, the balance sheet was read and adopted, hmvmg a good balance in hand. The retiring presi- dent, Mr. Jacob Leader, in a few \Vell-chosen words, thanked all his colleagues for their assi tance and reported that the last year \ntR one of the most success- ful in the socie~y's history, both socially and financially.

The election was then proceeded "''ith and Mr.

Jacob Leader was again elected unopposed as presi- dent. Rising amidst loud cheers, he thanked them for the brncur done him in electing him a president for the fifth ;year in succession. in spite of the fact that he was in all probability leaving Worcester at the end of the year. He hoped to just.ifv bis name and carry on the society's affairs in the right path.

. On July 1qt~ the Hobertson Young Israel Society paid a return VlSlt to \Vorcester, where an inter-debate was held in the Commercial Ha.11 with the Worcester .T unior Zionist Society. Mr. Volks presided over a large gathering. A memorial service was first held for. the late. Dr .. Herzl, Rev. Stein officiating, after
