Matakuliah ini mempelajari hakikat belajar dan pembelajaran, teori dan prinsip belajar dan pembelajaran, pengembangan kurikulum dan program belajar dan pembelajaran, prinsip-prinsip pengembangan model belajar dan pembelajaran, prinsip-prinsip penerapan pendekatan-pendekatan belajar dan pembelajaran, media dan sumber belajar dan pembelajaran, evaluasi belajar dan pembelajaran, pengolahan dan dasar-dasar pengembangan alat evaluasi.

LISTENING I

The skills of understanding English spoken at normal speed can be acquired only through practice in listening to English spoken at normal speed. In this course, students are entailed to use background knowledge, situation, topic, context, and topic to arrive at comprehension through using key words and predicting; students are also required to decode individual words in the message to derive meaning. These skills are used in listening for gist, listening for details, and inferring

meaning from context. This course will deal with contemporary adult topic that are of interest and relevance to learners of different cultural background.

LISTENING II

In this course, two listening skills are taught. Top down processing skills requires student to use background knowledge, the situation, context, and topic to arrive at comprehension though using key word and predicting; Bottom up processing skill requires student to decode individual words in the message to derive meaning. Both of those skills are used in listening for gist, listening for detail, at inferring meaning from context. The topic of these course will deal with contemporary and adult topic that are of interest and relevance to learners of different cultural background. Information is presented that can serve as basis for cross cultural comparison.

LISTENING III

This course is designed to improve student’s listening skills fro pre-advance to advanced level. Two listening skills, top-down processing skills and bottom up processing skills are introduced in this course to listen for the gist, listening for details, and meaning inference with the broader and deeper learning materials of listening passages taken from various sources as described below.

LISTENING IV

This course is aimed at improving students’ listening skills from pre-advanced to advanced level. Listening IV focuses more on understanding short to longer conversations, talks and interview on various topics. The course covers listening for words or phrases, statements, and listening for structures. In addition, students are also exposed to listening of standardized test, TOEFL

SPEAKING I

This course focuses on the role of spoken language to enhance the mastery of basic techniques and functions of conversation in English, the illustration of aspects of fluency and accuracy in speaking , simulation and intensive practice of using the sentence patterns in conversations and dialogues. The course also focuses on the application of guided and self-develop conversations

This course focuses on enhancing the students’ speaking skills in English. The lesson will be done through activities such as practicing functions, intonations, pronunciation and dialogue

SPEAKING III

This course deals with the description of characteristics of spoken language and problems of verbal communication and strategies of solving the problems. The course also focus on the use of learnt sentence patterns and vocabulary in intensive practice and simulation of dialogues or conversations in different topics and situation.

SPEAKING IV

This course is designed to improve the students’ speaking skill in academic and real life contexts.

READING 1

This course focuses on the description and illustration of the sub-skills in reading, the practice of identifying main ideas in paragraphs, scanning and skimming, and the comprehension and internalization of sentence patterns used in the reading text.

READING II

This course discusses the strategies of reading different kinds of texts of intermediate level such as getting the main ideas, finding specific information, rapid reading strategies, and strategies of developing vocabulary.

READING III

This course is designed to improve the students’ reading skills in Reading. The discussion includes narrative readings, argumentative readings and expositional readings. Students are exposed to various reading exercises to improve their comprehension in reading the narrative, argumentative and expositional texts

Reading Comprehension IV, being the highest level of Reading Comprehension series focuses applying the reading skills and strategies the students have already gained from previuos reading series, such as sensitizing, skimming to scanning, drawing conclusions, understanding point of view, etc. The emphasis is more on building reading fluency of the students. Reading Comprehension standardized TOEFL test are also exposed to the students

WRITING 1

This course is designed to engage students to produce paragraph writing. The course provides students with some steps to do in writing such as exploring ideas, organizing ideas, developing cohesion and style, writing the first draft, revising your writing, editing practice, writing the second draft.

WRITING 2

This course focuses on brief description and illustration of the role of grammar and vocabulary in written language, the advantages of writing activity in enhancing the mastery of grammar and vocabulary, the similarities and differences of spoken and written language, and aspects of life which demand the writing skills. The course also discusses the use of punctuation, conjunctions; sentence markers; practice on writing short paragraphs and summary, error analysis of structure/grammar and vocabulary in writing, the development of writing from sentence to paragraph level, format of report writing, the writing of biography, appreciation, apologies in personal letters, etc

WRITING 3

This course is designed to improve the students’ skills in writing processes from observation and experience.

WRITING 4

This course focuses on improving the students’ skills in writing strategy and style.

Grammar 1 is the continuation of the structure lesson the students had in Senior High School. This course is also a ‘review’ on the whole materials the students previously learned and they had lack of grammar knowledge and exercises had in their junior and senior high schools. Grammar 1 emphasizes on the importance of Parts of Speech, and simple and Progressive Tenses, and sentence patterns. In addition, to support understanding the patterns, students will also acquainted with word categories based on their forms and functions.

STRUCTURE II

As the continuation of Grammar 1, focuses on deeper discussion on Parts of Speech such as verbs and auxiliaries, noun and determiners, pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs. To ensure understanding, students are given routine exercises as available in student’s workbook. Correction on student’s work becomes feedback for their self-development

STRUCTURE III

Being the highest level in Grammar series, Grammar 3 focuses more on developed sentence patterns and types. The topics cover simple sentence, sentence types and discourse function, proforms and ellipsis, etc.

STRUCTURE IV

Structure/Grammar IV, the highest level in Grammar series focuses on an overview of grammar learnt in Grammar III with an emphasis on structures of standardized TOEFL test.

VOCABULARY

Mata kuliah ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan pengetahuan dan pemahaman mahasiswa tentang jenis dan sistem kosakata bahasa Inggris untuk menunjang kemampuan dan ketrampilan berkomunikasi lisan dan tulisan dalam bahasa Inggris yang benar dan baik.
