To : M. Erwin >[email protected] Subject : My experience
Hi Erwin,
How are you doing? Hope you’re always fine in Pariaman.
I have stayed in Tarakan, East Kalimantan, for six months.
My family moved here from Makassar. I have a great experience here. Last holiday, we went to Mulawarman Museum in Tenggarong. Once it was the Kutai Palace. We tried a boat called ‘ketingting’ there. It did not run fast, but I liked it because I could feel the warm air and touched the cool water of Mahakam river! I also loved the slow shake of the boat. It made me sleepy, haha.
Okay Win, please tell me about your experience in Pariaman.
I’m waiting for your letter.
Best,
Andi Ibrahim

Subject : My Experience Hi Baim,
I am glad to receive your letter. I’m fine here. What about you?
You have moved to Kalimantan? Great, you’ll have more experience in knowing different places. I still remember our togetherness in the junior high school in Makassar. Hope I can visit it again, besides coming to your town.
Last holiday, I went to Pantai Pariaman with my family. We walked along the beach. The air was fresh and cool. My mother said it was because there were many casuarina trees there. We even walked into the water at the beach and felt the wave strike our body. It was really fun. Once, I fell and was dragged by the wave to the shore! But it didn’t matter, my father helped me up and we laughed together.
Come here sometime, Baim, and go to this beach with us.
We will have much fun there.
Best, Erwin

My new friends are friendly. They are helpful, too. They always show me how to deal with things I don’t know. I feel welcome here. That is my new school. I hope you can share your experience, too.
Good bye for now.

Kesuma
A Folktale from East Java
The story told us about a husband and a wife named Joko Seger and Roro Anteng. They had been married for years and they did not have any children yet. They wanted to have children; they prayed to gods every day. And finally Joko Seger had a vision. His wife would be pregnant if he meditated in a cave. However, a lion lived in the cave. Joko Seger fought the lion. He won! Later he meditated in the cave.
Joko Seger was meditating. Later, he heard a voice.
“Joko Seger, all the gods agree to give you children, lots of children.”
“Really? Thank you very much,” said Joko Seger happily.
“But there is one condition you have to do.”
“Say it. I will do anything as long as you give me lots of children,” said Joko Seger.
Observing and Questioning
Chapter 6. Long time ago, there lived ... 107 “You will have 25 children. But you have to sacrifice one of them when they are adult.”
“I agree,” said Joko Seger without any doubts. He was so happy that Gods would give them 25 children. He thought
sacrificing one of them would not to be a problem. He would still have 24 children.
At home, Joko Seger told his wife about his conversation with the god. Roro Anteng could not say anything. After all, he husband had promised to Gods. She just hoped that they would never have to sacrifice one child.
Later, Roro Anteng was pregnant. They had a baby! Joko Seger and Roro Anteng were very happy. The first baby was followed by other babies. Sometimes, the babies were born twins and other times the babies were born triplets. And the couple finally had 25 children! They were extremely happy.
And when the children were grown up, Joko Seger had a dream. He talked to the gods, “Joko Seger, remember your promise.
I want you to bring one of your children to the crater of Mount Bromo. Sacrifice your child there. If you don’t keep your promise, the mountain will erupt and destroy everything.”
Joko Seger woke up from his sleep. He was restless. He then talked to all his children about his promise. “No, father. I don’t want to die,” said the oldest. “I don’t either, Father,” said another child.
All the children refused to be sacrificed. Joko Seger did not have the heart to force them. He loved all his children. Suddenly, the youngest child talked. His name was Kesuma.
“Please let me do it, Father. I love our family and the people of Tengger. But please, commemorate my sacrifice. Every year, please

hold a ceremony and provide some offerings to the creater of Mount Bromo,” said Kesuma.
Kesuma was a very good son. He was obedient to his parents and very kind to the other people. All the villagers loved him. He was kind and always helped other people. Kesuma went to the crater. He jumped and he was swallowed by fire. Everybody was sad, but they all were very thankful to Kesuma. Because of him, their place was safe from the eruption of Mount Bromo.
Until now, once a year the people of Tengger always hold a ceremony to commemorate Kesuma. They bring offerings to the crater of Mount Bromo.

The Origin of Hedgehog River A Folktale from North Sumatra
Long time ago, there lived a farmer and his wife in a village by the side of a forest. They lived in a simple way and they liked to help other people, especially people in afflictions.
One night, the farmer and his wife were resting in their house. The farmer was sitting beside his sleeping wife. Suddenly, a white centipede came out of the wife’s head. The farmer was
amazed. He then followed the centipede until they reached a small pond not far from their house. Then the centipede suddenly
