English Vocabularies For Teenagers
Hornby 1995: 1331 defines vocabulary as the total number of words in a language; vocabulary is a list of words with their meanings”. While Ur 1998: 60 states as follows: “Vocabulary can be defined, roughly, as the words we teach in the foreign language. However, a new item of vocabulary may be more than just a single word: for example, post office , and mother-in-law , which are made up o two or three words but express a single idea. A Useful convention is to cover all such cases by talking about vocabulary „items’ rather than „words’.”
vocabulary is the total number of words which are needed to communicate ideas and express the speaker’s means. That is the reason why it is important to learn vocabulary. When learning foreign language, our individual vocabulary in that language is one of the most important micro-skills to develop.
Why vocabulary is so important?
Vocabulary refers to the words used in a language. Vocabulary is so important. Of course, all micro-skills like grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation are important. But it’s more difficult to communicate with no vocabulary than with no grammar.
Vocabulary is the words in a language that are understood by a particular person or group of people to communicate each other whether orally or written. Understanding vocabulary well , it’s affect to the quality of communication by composing the words correctly become sentences to convey our ideas, expression or means to other people.
There are two main types of vocabulary:
a. Active and passive An active vocabulary consists of the words we understand and use in everyday speaking and writing.
b. Passive vocabulary is made up of words that we may recognize but don't generally use in the course of normal communication.
