CHAPTER IV RESEARCH FINDINGS AND DISCUSSIONS

B. Research Findings and Data Analysis

Research findings presented and discussed to answer the research questions that were about the goal, materials, steps and evaluation of teaching writing through Project Based Learning Method at SMPN 2 Rambipuji Jember.

The researcher elaborated research findings based on the result of observation, interview, and document review, then researcher described, elaborated and interpreted the data till becoming whole description

1. The Goal of Teaching Writing Through Project Based Learning at Ninth Grade of SMPN2 Rambipuji Jember

Goal is the main point that should be determined before teacher decide the methode used in teaching. Goal of teaching could be defined as

target that has been decided to make better readers and improves comprehension and critical thinking.

One activity found by the researcher showed that the teacher explained the importance of learning English in this globalization era to the students in the class. So the students were encouraged to be able to learn English well.

As the result of the observation and interview that has been done, the researcher could know that the goal of teaching writing through Project Based Learning at nintht Grade of SMPN2 Rambipuji Jember could be classified as to increase students’ motivation to write, the students able to interact with their social life, the students’ able to have critical thinking, students’ able to interactive and to stimulate student activity. Those have been delivered by the teacher as follows48:

Saya menggunakan metode ini dalam mengajar writing agar siswa lebih interaktif di kelas, dan juga saya rasa metode ini sangat cocok diterapkan untuk lebih meningkatkan critical thinking siswan lalu menuangkannya kedalam bentuk tulisan

I used this kind of method in teaching writing to make students more interactive in the class, besides I also think this method is very suitable to be applied to improve students' critical thinking and then students write it down in their book

In others activity, the teacher also said49:

Metode project based learning ini juga cocok saya terapkan menginginkan anak-anak disini masih kurang termotivasi dalam belajar bahasa inggris, khususnya dibidang writing. Dengan menggunakan metode ini, bisa menstimulus siswa sehingga akan meningkatkan metovasi mereka dalam belajar.

This method project based learning is proper to be applied because the students here are demotivating to study English, including writing skill. The use of this method able to stimulate students then they are motivated to study English.

After the goal was explained by the teacher, the researcher also found that the teacher explained how to achieve the goal that had been explained, namely the teacher inform to avoid unconfident to try in learning English

All the statements above were supported by observation done by researcher, the researcher found that the teacher gave students a duty related to procedure text then the teacher asked to have teamwork and ordered students to interact with the group50

Based on the interview and observation above, the researcher concluded that the goals of teaching writing through project based learning at SMPN 2 Rambipuji were: 1) the students were able to increase their motivation to write. 2) The students were able to interact with their social life. 3) The students were able to have critical thinking. 4) The students were able to intractive and to stimulate student activity

2. The Material of Teaching Writing Through Project Based Learning at Ninth Grade of SMPN2 Rambipuji Jember

Material is the thing which is taught by the teacher to the students during in the class. The findings showed that the materials related with teaching writing through project based learning at SMPN2 Rambipuji Jember followed the lesson plane and LKS Book which was given to each

student. It was showed by observation and interview conducted by the researcher in few days, there were some materials and the source of those taught during writing lesson. Those were explained by the teacher as follows:

Untuk semua materi yang kami ajarkan itu berdasarkan buku lks yang di bagikan ke masing-masing siswa, biasanya saya juga menyelangi grammar ketikan mengajar agar siswa dapat menulis dengan benar51

All the lessons we taught, it based on the textbook that was distributed to each student, and I also taught students grammar to have students able to write correctly

The statement above was straightened by student’s statement, she said:

Kalau minggu lalu, kita di ajarin tentang procedure text seperti yang ada di LKS52

We taught about procedure text by the teacher last week as in LKS guided book

From all the statements above, it can be known that the material taught by the teacher at SMPN2 Rambipuji Jember was procedure text.

Besides, the teacher explained the material based on LKS which was given to the students and the teacher also taught about grammatical form to make students had good arrangement in their writing

Other interview conducted by the researcher with one of student before she had the class, this interview got the result about the material thought to the students at ninth class of SMPN2 Rambipuj Jember 53:

(How did the teacher teach procedure text?)

Interviewee: Kami di kasih beberapa topik, tarus masing-masing kelompok disuruh memilih topik yang diinginkan dan mendiskusikan dengan anggota kelompoknya

(We were given some topics, and then the teacher asked every group to choose the topic and discussed it with the member in the group)

Interviewer: Oh gitu. Kalau habis ini kalian pelajaran bahasa inggris tentang apa?

(Ok, so what is the English lesson about for today?) Interviewee: Tentang short message kak

(It is about short message)

The statement above was straightened by observation conducted by the researcher, the researcher got the result that one of the material taught at ninth grade of SMPN2 Rambipuji Jember was about procedure text, the teacher shared some topicts to be discussd by the students54.

Based on the observation and interview elaborated above, the researcher concluded that the materials provided at ninth grade of SMPN2 Rambipuji Jember were followed the LKS book which was given before to all students, while the material taught during conducting project based learning was about procedure text.

3. The Steps of Teaching Writing Skill Through Project Based Learning At Ninth Grade of SMPN2 Rambipuji Jember

In this session, the researcher described the step of teaching writing skill through project based learning at ninth grade of SMPN2 Rambipuji Jember

Based on observation conducted by the researcher, there were some steps which were implemented by the teacher in teaching writing through project based learning that the researcher found. Those were55

a. The teacher asked students to make group

In this session, the teachers asked students to make six groups consisted of five students. The students were free to choose their fiend group

b. The teacher gave topic

The teacher gave explanation about procedure text, as the definition/the mean of procedure text, the kind of procedure text, the example of procedure text and the kind of generic structure. Then, the teacher gave students six topics to be chosen by students, every student

should choose different topics. (Orange juice, a cup of tea, a cup of hot milk, fried rice, fried noodle, and sunny side up)

c. The teacher explained all elements in the project

In this secsion, the teacher explained and introduced the project and all elements needed in it

d. The teacher deciding the time during conducting project

The teacher and student did an agreement about the deadline. The project would be collected in 20 minutes

e. Conducting a project

The students were explained the project. Besides, at the end of the project, the students had to submit poster. The students could discus with their friends related to the content of the project, such vocabulary, grammatical form and others content of the project

f. The teacher monitored the students’ activity

The teacher inspected the students’ progress. Regarding, PJBL is students centered and the teacher as facilitator in the class

g. The teacher assessed the students’ project

The last steps that were conducted by the teacher at SMPN2 Rambipuji Jember were asked students to submit the students’ project.

The teachers assessed students’ project, told the weakness and valued it.

At the observation conducted by the researcher, the researcher also found that the teacher vacillated students in doing the project, he told students what should be complicated in the project. Besides, the teacher

visited each group then asked them if they found difficulties. There seem the student who asked about language form that must be used

In other activity, the English teachers also explained:

Untuk pengaplikasian project based learning ini, saya biasanya menyuruh siswa untuk membuat group, tarus mendesign project yang diinginkan sebelum saya kasih penilaian56

To implement project based learning, I often asked students to make group, then asking them to design a project and I valued it The statement above was supported by interview conducted by the researcher and students57.

(How did the teacher teach procedure text?)

Interviewee: anak-anak di kasih beberapa topik, tarus masing-masing kelompok disuruh memilih topik yang diinginkan dan mendiskusikan dengan anggota kelompoknya

Other observation conducted by the researcher got the result that after explaining material, the teacher mentioned a topic and asked students

to analyze the topic and write it down in the students’ book with limited time for about twenty minutes. After that, the teacher asked students to submit the project and brought it to the office to be graded58

Based on observation conducted by the researcher 01st of July 2022 the researcher was a part of the students’ class during learning and teaching process. The researcher found that the teacher was guiding students to write writing dialog which was packaged by poster to increase students’ writing and critical thinking59.

Teacher: well. By the way, what did you learn last week?

Students: Menulis dialog, sir.

Teacher: Good. Is there question about it?

Students: No, Siiiiir

Teacher: Alright, then I will ask you some questions. What is dialog?

Student: dialog is written or spoken conversation to exchange idea, condition and everything between two or more people (one of student answered while looking at her book)

Teacher: Ok, Today kita akan membuat mini project to make you understand better about dialog. I will divide you into some group.

The teacher asked students to find a partner before asking them to write a dialog. The teacher explained students the steps to write a dialog which was packaged a poster, and there something that should be discussed in it. At the end of explanation, the teacher asked students to make a dialog with their partner for about 15 minutes, then he gave every student a topic

that must be discussed. It also showed that the teacher go around to monitor students in the class. At the end, the teacher told that the students’ writing would be posted in the class wall60

The observation above was related to the English teacher’s explanation before:

Ketika pembelajaran tentang dialog, saya lebih sering meminta siswa untuk menulis dialog secara berpasangan, saya kira itu lebih efektif ketimbang langsung meminta siswa untuk praktek conversation ke depan61

I often ask students to write dialogues in pairs during learning dialog, I think it is more effective than directly asking students to practice conversation in front of class

Based on observation and interview above, the researcher could conclude that the steps implemented in teaching writing through project based learning at ninth grade students of SMPN2 Rambipuji were: 1) Grouping students. 2) Giving Topic. 3) Conducting a project. 4) Determining the time. 5) Monitoring. 6) Assessing project

4. The Evaluation of Teaching Writing Skill Through Project Based Learning at Ninth Grade Of SMPN2 Rambipuji Jember

Based on the observation and interview the researcher did, the researcher found that the evaluation was conducted after all the activities well done every conducting project in teaching writing skill through project based learning at eight ninth of SMPN2 rambipuji Jember. It was delivered by Mr. Sudarmono as the English teacher. He said:

Untuk penilayannya sendiri, biasanya saya langsung nilai di dalam kelas sehabis anak-anak mengerjakan proyeknya, tapi saya sering membawa tugasnya anak-anak ke kantor buat dinilai apabila waktu pembelajarannya sudah habis62

I usually grade it right away in class after the students work on the project, but I often take the students’ assignments to the office to be assessed when their learning time is up

The statement above was supported by observation the researcher did. The researcher found that the English teacher was grading students’

project, the researcher found it when he would like to conduct interview in school office63.

Based on document review which was shown by the English teacher got the result that there a rubric of evaluation which used by the teacher to grade students’ assignments. Those can be seen in appendix

Based on the observation, interview and document review above, the researcher concluded that the teacher used summative evaluation where the teacher evaluated students’ project at the end of teaching and learning process. There some parts which were evaluated by the English teacher in teaching writing based on project based learning at ninth grade students of SMPN2 Rambipuji. Those were. 1) Presentation. 2) Contribution. 3) Creativity.

Besides, there are some parts of the project that evaluated by the teacher.

Those were:

1. Presentation.

2. Contribution.

3. Creativity.

All the criterias above were conducted by scale indicator such excellent, good and poor
