SIMPULAN DAN SARAN UMUM
Simpulan Umum
Setelah semua informasi dianalisis dan dirangkum dari setiap bagian dalam disertasi ini, maka hasil penelitian dalam disertasi ini dapat dirumuskan menjadi berbagai simpulan dan saran/rekomendasi sebagai berikut:
1. Kondisi habitat berkorelasi kuat dengan keragaman pakan yang juga mempengaruhi ketersediaan nutrisi, air, dan energi asal pakan untuk badak jawa. Setidaknya satu wilayah jelajah badak dalam penelitian ini menunjukkan rataan konsumsi energi dan air yang rendah. Kandungan air asal pakan mengalami fluktuasi dan pada musim kering terlihat ada kecenderungan penurunan pada kandungan air asal pakan di musim kering
2. Metabolit hormon kortisol berupa 3α, 11β-dihidroxy-CM diduga memiliki potensi untuk digunakan sebagai indikator aktifitas korteks adrenal akibat adanya cekaman. Pada musim kering terjadi kecenderungan peningkatan cekaman pada badak.
3. Analogi antara badak jawa dan kuda terbangun dan diperkuat dengan informasi dari berbagai literatur serta dari pengamatan langsung dalam penelitian ini. Kuda adalah hewan model yang layak digunakan untuk penelitian badak jawa terkait dengan aspek spesifik terkait perilaku, kecernaan, dan respons fisiologis terhadap cekaman terutama cekaman yang bersifat akut.
Saran Umum
1. Perlu penyusunan protokol pemantauan reguler dengan menggunakan parameter yang telah dikaji dalam penelitian ini, serta mengoptimalkan penggunaan hewan model untuk mensimulasikan berbagai peubah yang dapat mempengaruhi kesejahteraan dan keberlangsungan hidup badak jawa seperti: cekaman dan penyakit
2. Pemantauan populasi dengan teknik yang lebih canggih untuk memantau status nutrisi, cekaman, dan kapasitas reproduksi (siklus pada betina dan kadar testosteron pada jantan)
3. Pengkayaan habitat dengan mendorong perbanyakan tumbuhan pakan terutama yang mengandung nutrien tinggi. Pengkayaan habitat seperti ini dapat dikaitkan dengan upaya pengendalian tumbuhan pengganggu serta mengurangi jumlah tumbuhan yang mengandung toksin dan/atau antinutrisi.r
