In 1 9 8 3 , VISE i n t r o d u c e d changes to HSC s t a n d a r d i s a t i o n to take effect in 1 9 8 4 a n d 1 9 8 5 . These changes, a m o n g other t h i n g s , p r o v i d e that:
(i) the m i n i m u m percentage of c a n d i d a t e s o b t a i n i n g Grade D a n d above in Group 1 English w i l l be 8 0 % (the 1 9 8 1 rate w a s 7 3 . 4 % ) ; ( i i ) the m i n i m u m percentage of c a n d i d a t e s o b t a i n i n g Grade D and above
in all other subjects w i l l be increased to 7 0 % .
Evidence a v a i l a b l e to the U n i v e r s i t y suggests that s a t i s f a c t i o n of general u n i v e r s i t y entrance r e q u i r e m e n t s in 1 9 8 4 w i l l not have the same m e a n i n g as in 1 9 8 3 , as the p r o p o r t i o n of s u c c e s s f u l c a n d i d a t e s w i l l increase as a result of the a n n o u n c e d changes in HSC assessment.
