863. DENTAL PROSTHETICS PART II

A course of lectures and related clinical and laboratory work throughout the year.

A non-returnable laboratory fee of $10.00 must be paid to the Department before the student will be issued with instruments. An introductory lecture will be given during Orientation Week, the time and place of which and other relevant details will be posted on the Faculty and Departmental noticeboards.

SYLLABUS. An introduction to methods of treatment; treatment planning; psycho

-

logical problems; the sterilization of dental prosthetic materials and appliances; the anatomy of the oral cavity and of the temporomandibular joint; the selection of suit- able methods and materials for impressions; registrations—vertical component and freeway space; tooth form in relation to aesthetics and mastication; factors involved in retention; the checking of wax trial dentures; the insertion of dentures; the after- care of the patient; the peridental membrane; results of tooth loss; an introduction to the development of articulators; the use of surveyors and the designing of partial dentures.

CLINicAT. Demonstrations closely related to the above syllabus, and the treat- ment of fully edentulous patients.

LABORATORY. Instruction in and the carrying out of laboratory procedures asso- ciated with the clinical work. Introduction to partial denture preparation.

WRITTEN Wовк. Assignments and essays will be set during the year and will be taken into account when assessing the candidate's progress at the time of the annual examinations.

SYLLARvs: The treatment of different types of edentulous patients: examination, advanced impression techniques, abnormal ridge relationships, variations of registra- tiina, anatomical and non-anatomical tooth forms, occlusal adjustments, rebasing, the properties of denture base materials.

The treatment of different types of partially edentulous patients: examination, indications for and limitations of treatment, principles of preliminary design, sur- veying, impression techniques, registrations, fabrication of acrylic teeth; design and preparation of the components of partial dentures and similar appliances, insertion of dentures and instructions to the patient.

An introduction to immediate denture therapy, and to cleft palate patients.
