METALLOGRAPHY AND DENTAL MATERIALS

Candidates will be expected to have a knowledge of the following matters:

(i) Nature of metals and alloys and their physical and mechanical properties.

Elasticity and plasticity. Theories of deformation. Properties of dislocations. Yielding, work-hardening, annealing and fracture. Principles of solidification. Defects in ingots and castings. Studies of equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions in binary and ternary systems. Strengthening mechanisms in solids. Properties of specific metals and alloys.

(ii) Properties of dental materials relative to their environment. Current trends in research on the properties, evaluation and development of dental materials as follows: thermoplastic and thermosetting impression materials, gypsum products, casting investments, waxes, polymers of dental interest, ceramics; dental cements, ceramic-metal combinations, silver-tin and copper amalgams and other base and noble metal alloys; abrasives; rotating cutting instruments, X-ray films; orthodontic wires. A knowledge of current specifications for dental materials will be expected.
