Education subjects are offered under the auspices of the Education Faculty, with lecturing staff drawn from co-operating Departments of Curriculum Studies, Educational Psychology. Educational Sociology and Social Studies, and School Experience, with a number of staff drawn from other appropnate departments.

Under the Regulations for the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Course as from 1982. each student is required to take a minimum of 42 points in Group 4 Education subjects.

A new sequence of Education subjects is being successively phased in over the three-year period 1982 -84, in the following order:

1982 Education B 6 points (incorporating School Experience) 1983 Education C 12 points (incorporating School Expenence) 1984 Education D 24 points (incorporating School Experience)

Students who first took Education B in 1982 began the new sequence. Those who completed Education or School Experience requirements pnor to 1982 will undertake the appropriate existing Education 4 subject. (See also the section Advice to Students — Education Studies and School Experience at the end of the BEd (Secondary) introductory section.)

Subjects offered for 1983 are as follows:

Education B (EDB01) 6 points

Equivalent to 2 hours class contact a week throughout Terms 2 and 3. There will be two weeks of school expenence, one week in a primary school and one week in a secondary school.

Prerequisite: Minimum of 18 points credit in the course

Syllabus

This subject consists of College-based and school-based studies, and school experience, and is designed to introduce prospective teachers to schools. It will be focused around a block of 5 days school experience in a primary school and 5 days in a secondary school, together with a program of College-based seminars throughout Terms 2 and 3. These are conducted by Education Faculty through the Departments of Curriculum Studies, Educational Psychology, Educational Sociology and Social Studies, and Philosophy.

Within the general theme of 'Schools and Schooling', College-based studies aim to develop an awareness and understanding of the concepts and issues central to the study of education.

Consideration will be given to such matters as the concept of education; education and schooling; origins of educational thought and practice, with particular reference to Australia; recent developments and future directions in Victorian education; central issues in curriculum; diversity and change in schools and schooling; the relationship between change in society and change in education; some Contentious issues in contemporary education: and the role of the teacher.

School-based studies during the 10-day school experience placement will focus on the philosophy and organisation of the school within the context of those issues examined in College-based classes.

Books

Reading guides will be distributed during the year. Students will be referred to appropriate materials, journals. texts and resources.

Assessment

Assessment will be based on participation in seminars and field experiences, preparation of seminars, the completion of exercises (set and negotiated), and the completion of the school experience program.

Education C (EDC01) 12 points

Equivalent to 4 hours class work throughout the year. There will be a 15-day school experience placement in a secondary school in the first three weeks of Term 2.

Prerequisite' Satisfactory completion of Education B or an approved equivalent This subject is designed to be taken by students in the third year of their course.

Syllabus

This subject is the second in a three-year sequence and provides for a student to Investigate those aspects of the school curriculum associated with the student's academic background and emergent professional role.

The subject aims to integrate the academic and professional concerns of students through the study of areas of enquiry in the field of education and to prepare students for their first classroom teaching practice In all studies in this subject, particular emphasis will be given to the role of the teacher at work in the classroom.

This subject consists of College-based and school-based studies and school experience. College studies will enable students to become conversant with issues in curriculum studies, educational psychology, educational sociology, educational technology, educational philosophy, teaching practice and styles. School experience studies will provide opportunities for students to relate College studies to those areas of school programs that are of specific interest to them.

Using an integrative approach, the following areas and issues will be covered: classroom management, including models of the teaching/learning process; an examination of curriculum components in the secondary school, including those pertinent to the student's areas of specialisation; the nature of the teacher-pupil relationship; methodological concerns particular to areas of the secondary school curriculum

Assessment

Based on participation in seminar and field experiences, the preparation of seminar papers, the completion of exercises and assignments, and the satisfactory completion of Term 2 school experience and evaluation program.

Education D 24 points

This subject will not be offered in 1983.

Education BOO (EDBOO) 8 points

Two class-contact hours a week in Terms 1 and 3. and the equivalent of one class-contact hour a week in Term 2, in conjunction with School Experience in Term 2.

Prerequisite: 27 points in science studies Syllabus

This subject is the first in a three-year sequence — Education BOO. COO and C10 and is an introductory study of schools, the social and cultural settings within which they function, and the assumptions and values which provide their basis.

Within the structure of the school-based program, students will have opportunities to explore particular school structures. curriculum arrangements, and teacher/pupil relationships and activities. These observations and experiences will be used to enrich the lecture/seminar program, as well as providing a basis for future school experience and education studies.

Assessment

Based on regular exercises and assignments, one major written exercise (of approximately 3.000 words), and the submission of a diary. •

Education COO (EDC00) 12 points

The subject will be based on one day a week of education study during Terms 1 and 2. including a 10-day block placement in a secondary school at the beginning of Term 2. Term 3 will consist of three days a week of school experience for the first five weeks of Term 3, followed by an evaluation of this experience for the equivalent of three days a week for the remainder of Term 3.

Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of Education BOO. and 45 points of subjects in the course.

Syllabus

This subject is the second in a three-year sequence and is designed to prepare students for their first classroom teaching practice, to support them during this experience and to enable them to evaluate it - effectively.

and mathematics curricula at the junior secondary level, and an understanding of issues associated with teaching and learning.

Education COO builds on the expenences and studies of Education BOO, directing the locus of educational thinking to the teaching and learning of science and mathematics at the junior secondary level.

Using an integrative approach, the following areas and issues will be covered: the place of science and mathematics in the secondary school curriculum; science and mathematics curricula; methodological issues relating to teaching at the junior secondary level; human development, including specific emphasis on cognitive and conceptual development; human learning and motivation; educational design; and assessment and evaluation.

Assessment

Based on participation in seminar and field experiences, the preparation of seminar papers, the completion of exercises and assignments. and the satisfactory completion of the Term 3 school experience and evaluation program.

Education 4A (EDD00) 27 points

The time commitment in this subject is understood to be 75 per cent of a full year's workload.

Students undertake this subject within one of the programs offered by the Education Faculty (see under Education 4A l3 4B Programs) Students are offered the foundation studies in education which are drawn from Communication, Curriculum Studies, Educational Philosophy, Educational Psychology, and Educational Technology.

All students also undertake two Methods of Teaching and a minimum of 45 days supervised school experience.

While each of the programs embodies these three component areas, the approach to these studies and the arrangements for school experience differ according to the program undertaken.

While each of the programs embodies these three component areas, the approach to these studies and the arrangements for school experience differ according to the program undertaken.
