SYLLABUS
A study of law with particular reference to the law relating to professional prac- tice. Arbitration. Practice and procedure on arbitration. The duties and responsibilities of an arbitrator. The Award and its enforcement. Control of arbitration by the b'upreme Court. Costs.
Professional Negligence. The duty of care and responsibility owed by architects and builders. The assessment of damages for negligence.
A study of various forms of contract in common use in the State of Victoria.
The Law of master and servant and workers' compensation.
State and Federal Law relating to the organization of labour and trade unions.
the law governing industrial conflict between management and organized labour and the law relating to wages and working conditions in industry, all with special reference to the building industry.
A study of commercial law with particular reference to the law relating to pro- fessional practice.
Sale of Goods.
Negotiable instruments.
Credit purchase of goods.
Hire of goods.
Insurance Law.
Commerical usage of vehicles.
Law relating to partnership.

EXAMINATION
One 1-hour paper in mid-year and one 3-hour paper in fourth term. Assign- ments set during the year form part of the annual examination.
700-434. ADVANCED QUANTITY SURVEYING objectives of this course are twofold:
to examine and report on:
(a) new developments in the processing of information flowing between the design and contract aspects of building for estimating, planning and control purposes.
(b) existing and new contractual procedures and the attendant documentat- ion.
(c) the application of modem appraisal techniques in the work of the
quantity surveyor. .
(ii) (a) to engage with more complex problems of measurement of building work involving the use of advanced mensuration.
(b) to study methods of measuring and processing data about sophisticated environmental services in modem buildings.
The course, in relation to objective (i) above, will consist in the main of three- hour seminars, not more than 25 of which will be held during the year.
Not more than 26 tutorials will be offered in relation to objective (ii) above.
In addition to the foregoing a regular programme of prescribed reading will be followed.
Not more than 5 major practical exercises will be set, two of which will be set in connection with objective (i) above, three of which will be set in connection with objective (ii) (a).
Not more than 15 essays will be set in connection with objective (i) above.
SYLLABUS
The evolving role of the quantity surveyor; alternative formats of bills of quantities, activities bills, operational bills, elemental bills, locational bills.
Cost analysis, planning and control.
The application of E.D.P. to the production and sortation of bills of quantities data.
Tendering strategy; tendering procedures and contractual arrangements.
Design decision evaluation techniques.
Advanced mensuration applied to complex problems of measurement of Builder's work.

Statistics as a method of studying economic problems; methods of collecting data; design of samples; classifications graphs, frequency distributions, averages dispersion and skewness; distributions of sample statistics ( means and proportions);
significance tests and estimation; linear regression; analysis of time series; index num- bers; special studies of Australian statistics of National Income and prices.
