Candidates for the Honors degree are expected to complete an additional external subject and pursue a deeper study in a selected sector of the course. The course for this degree can only be undertaken by candidates who have had sufficient experience in building and have completed a bachelor's degree in building or who have an approved equivalent qualification.

PREPARATORY STUDIES ADVICE

Any other factors approved by the Professorial Council and the Council on the recommendation of the relevant Faculty or Board of Studies. All students admitted to the first year of the architecture and building courses in 1974 must be photographed for record purposes.

Exemption equivalent to two years of course may be granted to candidates who have completed a full-time course for a degree or degree in civil engineering from a recognized institute or university (see Table II). DEGREE COURSE OF BACHELOR OF BUILDING

Students who have successfully completed all coursework for the Associateship Degree of Quantity Surveying at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology may be considered for exemption from part of the coursework for the Bachelor of Construction degree. Any person who (a) by passing examinations at an overseas institution, has obtained exemption from the Part I Examinations of the Royal Institute of British Architects, may, on production of appropriate evidence to the Victorian Universities and Schools Examinations Board; be granted exemption from the Higher School Certificate examinations and (b) produce evidence that he has completed twelve months' practical experience in Architecture, be considered for exemption from part of the course for the degree of Bachelor of Architecture.

These applications will be accepted at the Student Administrative Office in January, the time of publication of the results of the annual examinations, 1973. Payment may be made to the account of the university at any branch of the National Bank of Australasia.

UNIVERSITY SERVICES

For further information about the faculties, students are referred to the sections printed in the University Calendar and to the heads of faculties. The house offers practice help in the basic subjects of most faculties for both non-resident and resident members.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AND AWARDS FOR ARCHITECTURE AND BUILDING STUDENTS

REGULATIONS

A person can be a candidate for the degree of Master in Architecture if (a) (i) he has a bachelor's degree in Architecture; or. ii) he possesses an equivalent qualification that has been accepted by the Professor's Council on the recommendation of the Faculty of Architecture and Construction; or. ii) he is a graduate of a university and satisfies the Faculty of Architecture and Building that he has had sufficient training and experience in building; and.

For the purposes of this regulation, five members of the Board, not including the Dean of the relevant faculty, will constitute a quorum. The form of typed or typed copies must conform to the specifications made from time to time by the Professorial Board.2. The Registrar deposits in the library of the university a copy of the thesis or work submitted by each candidate who has satisfied the examiners.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

The students will be examined on the design exercises submitted during the year and may be interviewed by the examination board in the fourth semester. HUMANITIES

The work with exercises, tasks and exam results is included in the annual test. An introduction to professional practice in relation to the scope of the architect's work. A study of specific aspects of professional management in relation to the architect's work.

LIGHTING I Fourteen lectures and seven 2-hour tutorials

A further study of the facilities and equipment of current building types, including an introduction to the design methods of such facilities. Students must submit field notes and an illustrated report on each of the buildings visited. A two week stay at the Mcllwraith Training Centre, Mount Martha, to gain insight into the behavior and handling of building materials.

Surveying instruments of use to architects; their use and care, with special attention to the requirements of the Architect.

Students may be asked to present papers based on the results of the exercises. The results of practical exercises and fieldwork reports are part of the exam. For subjects that are tested at certain stages of the year, they cover parts of subjects that have already been covered in the lectures and are part of the overall examination in the subject.

Students will review the work they submitted during the year, including calculations of two of their models.

The course provides an introduction to:. i) the nature and purpose of economics; the role of the economist in the decision-making process. the factors influencing commodity prices; the types of goods produced. the factors that influence the size and output of firms. Emphasis will be placed on the type of market the company operates in – whether competitive or non-competitive. iv) the structure of companies in Australia and their legal requirements in relation to both structure and policy. v) the factors that determine the level of income and employment in the economy; the role of individuals, business owners, governments, exporters, importers and banking institutions will be outlined. vi) the factors that determine government economic policies with respect to taxation and government spending. vii) the role of international trade. Emphasis will be placed on those specific factors that influence the size of the labor force.

No more than eight (8) assignments, drawn up during the first, second and third term, will be assessed and form part of the annual examination.

700 - 440. BUILDING ECONOMICS B

This course is compulsory for fourth year Quantitative Surveying students and is also available to Architecture students. Creation and use of valuation tables; principles of valuation of land used for development projects;. The influence of institutional factors on investment decisions with special emphasis on urban planning and construction regulations;.

Economics of urban land development; factors affecting land value; the effect of urban planning on land values; the economic case for urban planning.

700 - 234. MEASUREMENT OF BUILDERS' WORK 1

The course consists of a lecture and a 1-hour tutorial per week throughout the year. The work submitted during the year will also be graded and will be part of the exam. Assessment of the year's work will be based on the completion of no more than four major practical exercises set during the year.

Based on one 3-hour assignment in the fourth term and an assessment of assignments submitted during the year.

700-333. COMPUTER PROGRAMMING 1

To gain some insight into methods and techniques for operations research in design and management problems. The results are assessed on the basis of assignments submitted during the year and a 3-hour test in the 4th semester. The student will be examined on his participation during the year in the seminars.

He will be required to carry out a maximum of two major research investigations to be presented at the seminar.

A study of commercial law with special reference to the Act on the Practice of Business. ADVANCED QUANTITY SURVEYING The objectives of this course are twofold:. to investigate and report on:. a) new developments in the processing of information flowing between the design and contract aspects of construction for estimating, planning and control purposes. In relation to objective (i) above, the course will mainly consist of three-hour seminars, of which no more than 25 will be held during the year.

A maximum of 5 major practical exercises are set aside, two of which will be linked to objective (i) above, three of which will be linked to objective (ii) (a).

TECHNOLOGY (BUILDING) 700-146. BUILDING CONSTßUCTIQN 1

The results of tutorial work, assignments and tests will be part of the total exam. The results of lessons, practical exercises and long-term exams will be part of the annual exam. Students will take the course in Trades Instruction during the long holidays at the end of the first year.
