POLICIES GOVERNING ADMISSION, 1963 FIRST YEAR (DIVISION I)

All students admitted to the second year of the Medical course must be photographed for registration purposes. Details for the guidance of candidates will be furnished on request to the Registrar, Medical Branch of the Registrar's Office.

A candidate who fails to obtain one or more certificates is not admitted to the category IV exam without the permission of the Faculty of Medicine. Provisions indicating which of the exams in the course will be listed as annual exams can be made in the course details. Class lists for each of the subjects Medicine (including Clinical Medicine), Surgery (including Clinical Surgery) and Obstetrics and Gynecology will be prepared at the examinations.

Physiology and Biochemistry and Pathology and Microbiology

Candidates for the degree of Doctor of Medicine must be medical graduates from the university or from another recognized university. In doing so, the Faculty of Medicine may, by a decision adopted by an absolute majority of the faculty, allow any candidate to proceed only with the presentation of the diploma thesis. Students are advised to consult the bibliographies for Psychology Part I and Psychopathology in the General Handbook of the Department of Psychology.

THERAPEUTICS AND DIETETICS

Clinical guidance is given in wards, special wards and outpatient departments by members of the Senior Medical Staff. A tour of recent organizations has been organized by the Department of Maternal and Child Health. In the examination in Obstetrics and Gynecology, a question about the care and diseases of the newborn child may be included.

Questions may include Surgical Paediatrics (including examination of patients), Surgical Anatomy and Surgical Pathology. There is no formal examination, but questions covering this subject will be included in the final Examination in Medicine, Surgery and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

816. OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY

Clinical instruction is carried out at the Royal Women's Hospital by members of the Clinical School. A course of clinical instruction, extending over twelve weeks, under the direction of the Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The remainder will be given in the Gynecology Department of one of the recognized general hospitals.

ROYAL MELBOURNE HOSPITAL

The course of lectures in medicine and surgery is given in the third clinical semester by members of the honorary medical corps. Special clinical demonstrations are given by honorary medical staff every Saturday morning. Students also visit each of the other teaching hospitals for similar clinics on five Saturdays. The Ryan Scholarship in Medicine (£100) is awarded on the basis of an examination held by the Royal Australian College of Physicians shortly after the final examination.

ALFRED HOSPITAL

The Power Scholarships in Medicine and Surgery, with an estimated annual value of $100 each, are open to competition among the hospital's students. From the forty-fifth Monday of the year, self-lectures in Medicine and Surgery are given to third-year students with practical demonstrations in the department. The Michael and Margaret Ryan Scholarships, worth 100 euros each, are open to competition among the hospital's students and may be awarded to suitable candidates after review of the results of special clinical examinations in medicine and surgery.

PRINCE HENRY'S HÓSPITAL

From February to September there are clinical demonstrations in Medicine and Surgery in the. Tutorials in Pathology are held in the afternoon, at the end of clinical work. These are held weekly throughout the year and include case presentations in general medicine and surgery, and in the specialties.

THE ROYAL WOMEN'S HOSPITAL

During the fourth semester, written and clinical examinations in medicine, surgery and gynecology are conducted by the staff, in preparation for the final M.B., B.S. The Honorary Staff Award is awarded annually to the student who achieves the highest place in the Final Examination. Candidates are also expected to have read the major articles in the different journals of Physiology and Biochemistry published in the last twelve months in the English language. A knowledge of relevant topics in current journals published in the English language is expected.

MEDICINE

2) FOR CANDIDATES PROCEEDING BY THESIS NATURE OF THESIS

The examination in Clinical Medicine for candidates going through dissertation may involve the examination of the candidate in any matter related to the practice of Clinical Medicine. Candidates are advised to initially register with the Secretary, Medical Department of the Registrar. They are also expected to be aware of current developments in surgical practice as reported in the recent surgical and related journals.

PATHOLOGY INCLUDING MICROBIOLOGY

Candidates are advised to register in the first instance with the Registrar, Medical Branch at the Registrar's Office. The examination may include questions about the anatomy of the female pelvis, breast, abdomen, adjacent regions, and the newborn child. The examination may include questions about normal and abnormal development (structure and function) of the embryo, fetus and newborn child, their constituent parts, the placenta and extra-embryonic membranes.

Questions may include aspects that require knowledge of both general and specific pharmacology of the preceding conditions. If the thesis is acceptable, the Faculty of Medicine will then appoint examiners to examine the thesis and such examiners will be instructed to report on the value of the submitted work and give an indication of which parts of Part I and/or Part II . of the test is required of the candidate in addition to the thesis. The examination in Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology for candidates proceeding with the specialty may involve examination of the candidate in any matter relating to clinical obstetrics and gynaecology.

POSTGRADUATE MEDICAL DIPLOMAS DIPLOMA IN PUBLIC HEALTH

The Faculty of Medicine resolved that the thesis—. i) it must not be an ordinary collection of books, (ii) nor a mere collection of examples,. iv) but it must be a significant contribution to knowledge,. v) must be in a form suitable for publication or already published in an approved form and. vi) the work must be at least equal to that involved in the preparation for the examination in Obstetrics and Gynecology for the degree of M.G.O. An applicant who applies for work performed in collaboration with other workers must submit a statement indicating the extent to which he is responsible for the initiation and execution of the work. Examiners take such measures as they think fit to assess the value of a candidate's contribution to the overall work and must satisfy themselves that the individual candidate is responsible for making a significant contribution to the theory or practice or both of gynecology and obstetrics. or gynecology or obstetrics.

OTHER POSTGRADUATE MEDICAL DIPLOMAS DIPLOMA IN OPHTHALMOLOGY

ANATOMY

The subject of the examination will also be the specialized physiology of the eye and its related nervous mechanisms. ii) Nate light;. These papers will include questions designed to test the candidate's knowledge of the general medical and general surgical aspects of the conditions associated with the specialty.

DIPLOMA IN LARYNGOLOGY AND OTOLOGY ( Regulation 3.40)

ANATOMY

Candidates are also expected to be familiar with those parts of the central nervous system related to the functions of the parts described above. The examination may include questions related to (a) the general physiology of the nervous and circulatory systems and of nutrition and metabolism; (b) the detailed physiology of the organs of the head, neck and thorax.

Candidates are expected to have a detailed knowledge of the common diseases of the respiratory, cardiovascular and renal systems. A broad general knowledge is required of the common diseases of the nervous, endocrine, haemopoietic and digestive systems. They will also be expected to identify, from macroscopic or microscopic samples, the pathological changes that are characteristic of the various disease states.
