STUDENT PUBLICATIONS

It is hoped that the students of 1940 will, by their practical support, make sure that the continuance of the "Griffin" as a feature of student life will be certain. "Griffin" is edited by two students, a man and a woman, who have the power of co-opting sub-editors.

CLUBS AND SOCIETIES

For the past year or two too much has seemed to have been left to the two editors, and the students have not cooperated as might reasonably be expected. The business manager of the "trainee" or his co-opted assistant supervises the business part of the publication.

CONSTITUTIONS AND FUNCTIONS

The Officers of the Club shall be:—

It is desirable that clubs should follow certain general principles, viz.:—

Selection Committees:—

Tennis—Before the first association match, a permanent Selection Committee will be appointed, consisting of—. a) Secretary and two men for men's team. These will be elected by the playing members of the Club. a) The General Sports Secretaries (one man and one woman) will undertake the general supervision and organization of sports and other matches within the College (especially those related to the House System).

SOCIAL, LITERARY AND DRAMATIC

House debates and noon debates are also held under the auspices of the Association. The object of the DRAMATIC SOCIETY is to cultivate dramatic talent through the annual production of a play, the proceeds of which form a welcome contribution to the interstate fund. A portion of the proceeds in the last two years have been donated to the College Library.

The Business Manager of the play will be elected at the College elections (March) and he will then be, ex-officio, a member of the Dramatic Society Committee. The minutes of the meeting of the Dramatic Association Committee, on which the play is. selected, must be submitted to the Board no later than May 1. iii.).

NON-RESIDENTS' SOCIETY

NOTES ON CLUBS

In addition to these, other sports are keenly contested among the College's students, generally as part of the House System. CRICKET: Training takes place at the College and home matches are played at the University Oval. Members of the Athletic Club are encouraged to join external clubs (as the track season overlaps with the College holidays) to prepare for College Sports later in the year.

In recent years the college has been very successful in athletics and has included among its members several University Blues, and the University Women's Athletic Champion and Runner-. With the number of students entering the College constantly changing each year, it will be found necessary to divide its numbers in a slightly different way to create equality.

Section B.—Officials

As a result, Melbourne was the scene of animated battles. in Debating, Mixed Athletics and Women's Hockey, and a basketball team and a men's tennis team were sent to Adelaide. In 1937, Sydney College found itself unable to take part in competitions held in Melbourne, but allowed Adelaide and Melbourne to compete for the shield. Competitions were held in Athletics, Basketball, Football, Men's and Women's Tennis, Women's Hockey, with a non-competitive debate.

In 1939, the Interstate was held in Melbourne, when Adelaide again succeeded in carrying off the Shield. M. & A.) Melbne Adelde Draw Adelde — Melbne Melbne, Melbne Men's Hockey — No matches were held — — Melbne.

REUNION

In 1935 the debate was ruled out and of the six games held each group won three. In 1937, due to the coincidence of school and university holidays due to the Melbourne Education Conference, only a modified form of Reunion was held in May. However, the ex-students arranged a meeting at the College on the last Friday afternoon of the September break, and a successful ball was held in the evening at the Union Buffet.

Sports participation awards are presented annually as follows:—. a) Prizes may be awarded in any of the following sports and in such others as the Student Council may determine from time to time:—. BASIS for award determination:—. Each member of the club shall receive a prize consisting of club marks, subject to the following conditions:—. a) (1) All members of any association team must play at least half of the matches.

3) PROCEDURE:—

The prizes are then awarded as in 2. 4) If clubs are not members of an association: An ordinary badge is awarded by the Color Committee on the results of inter-club or internal competitions.

4) TRIBUNAL

5) BADGES

In the past, some Melbourne Teachers College students have played professional sports, particularly running, before entering. College teams are registered under amateur rules in the various metropolitan associations, and students who have not strictly maintained amateur status before entering the college are therefore barred from representing the college, both in Saturday games and in interstate teams. According to the rules of the Victorian Amateur Athletics Federation, any person who accepts money under any of the following conditions will be automatically disqualified from all amateur competitions:-.

This ground has received a lot of attention in the past two years and is recognized as one of the best grounds in the V.A.H.A. It is a tribute to the enthusiasm of college teams that they have done so well under such disadvantages in the past.

OLD TRAINEES' ASSOCIATION

The university holidays last for five weeks but all students are expected to return at the end of the second week of the student holidays.).

APPENDIX

A student's life is not a happy one. And basking in the departmental sun, a student's life is not a happy one. To laugh and to struggle and to work and drink of the poured wine, In the dear green earth the sign of the joy of the Lord. Keep singing when all the world groans, and tomorrow morning you'll be there.

All the stalls on the green Are as fair as can be, With trinkets and tokens so fair to see, So came then, maidens and men, To the fair in the morning's pride. So he came, maiden and man, to the fair in the pride of the morning. Girls and men, girls and men, Come to the fair in the morning, Heigh-ho.

The screeching of the fiddle and the jutting of the sail, The even trade winds that blow.
