THE HISTORY OF

MELBOURNE TEACHERS' COLLEGE

The government, which was financially embarrassed like the rest of society by the aftermath of the land boom, closed the college in 1893. Much of the tradition that has grown around the college was formed during the long period during which Dr. The year 1964 marked the seventy-fifth anniversary of the opening of the college on its present site.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

It trains students specifically to teach children in the pre-school department of primary schools and is designed to enable students to establish the right relationship with young children, understand their needs and know their capabilities. The work of the school can be seen in its corresponding aspect with preschool education and the education of secondary school children. The first year of the course is the same as that for the T.P.T.C. and is allowed to a student who has completed the first year of T.P.T.C. course for applying for admission to T.I.T.C. In the second and third years, the goal of appropriate study at the student's own level is the expansion of knowledge and personality development, as well as an understanding of the principles of child rearing and their practical application in the preschool period. .

The course trains students to manage and organize school libraries, to acquire knowledge and appreciation of children's literature, to understand children's reading habits, and to establish the library as the centerpiece of the school's educational program. The aim of the course is to provide the teacher with an understanding of the specific needs of slow learning and disabled children, and to train them in the specific skills required for qualification for employment in disadvantaged classes, special schools for mentally disabled children and special schools for physically disabled people. The aim of the course is to develop the students' cultural background, enrich their knowledge and appreciation of art and provide them with opportunities for artistic expression.

For the first two years of the course, the student spends one day a week at the college. Women can also study two minor crafts chosen from: book art, knitting, leatherwork, textile printing, ceramics. A study selected from: painting, textile printing and weaving, book art, needlework and tailoring, woodwork, metalwork.

Children's needs when using wood and metal as a medium of expression; the room – organization, aids, tools, display; methods of finishing; history and appreciation of the craft - historical examples, contemporary trends, good design.

SUBJECT DESCRIPTIONS

The English course is therefore designed to continue - on a more adult level - the work of the secondary school: it encourages reading, expands the student's awareness of life, develops a sense of aesthetics, provides opportunities for good and decisive conversation. write and increase your understanding and appreciation of the language. The lecturing and discussion approach to the course topics is closely related to practical work in schools. These principles are examined in a detailed study of methods of teaching reading, phonics, word learning, writing and numeracy; and triggering and dealing with creative experiences.

In the last year of the course for T.I.T.C. the work expands to provide a deeper understanding of the philosophy underlying approved methods, and expands to explore additional topics. And so students gain experience with melody, rhythm and harmony - the basic dimensions of music. They must make use of the extensive range of documents available at the college for borrowing.

Exercise ensures the acquisition of the skills necessary for him to participate in the daily physical activities of the different age groups. The student becomes familiar with the modern concepts of health education, which require the formation of healthy attitudes and correct habits in the care of the body. The methodological side of the subject considers the scope of nature studies in primary school, and its relationship to natural science.

This course introduces students to special aspects of the method for teaching social studies in the primary school.

THE STUDENTSHIP

At the end of the course, the individual subject ratings and teaching practice results are converted into a single college mark that affects the student's classification and eligibility for an extended course. To complete their courses while in the field, they must notify the principal of their intention at the beginning of the year; they will then be given the required work to be sent to the college for consideration. At the end of each year of the college course, a reclassification of all students into teachers' colleges is made on the basis of academic results and teaching ability.

After completing a college course, each graduate is assigned a position in class IV on the classified roll of teachers. His subsequent promotion depends on estimates made of his teaching efficiency by inspectors of schools; however, he must acquire additional qualifications to advance to senior positions in his division of the teaching service. Each year, extended studentships are awarded to a number of students who have qualified for the Trained Primary Teacher Certificate.

Applications from all Victorian teacher colleges are considered by the Department of Education and available places on extended courses are allocated on a quota system to the most successful students with the necessary prerequisites. The Secondary Trained Teacher Certificate (Art and Craft) may also be extended by one year to enable selected students to complete the Secondary Art Teacher Certificate.

Each student pays a flat fee which varies depending on the course and year of the course they follow.

GENERAL INFORMATION

He will discuss with the students any problems or concerns they may have about their general health and well-being. Students are medically examined and undergo X-rays on two occasions - before starting the course and again at the end of the course. These tests determine their suitability for teaching and eligibility to participate in the state pension scheme.

This major undertaking places considerable demands on the time and energy of a group of enthusiasts, but performance standards have been achieved. It aims to represent a cross-section of the best college thought in the field of creative writing. A nominal membership subscription of two shillings per annum can be paid through the group's union representative.

Large numbers of students, accompanied by members of staff, make educational tours in the second term holiday. This way they can enjoy the benefits of group travel at minimum fares to the main tourist destinations across Australia. Every student is covered under the provisions of the law for injuries received or illness sustained while on duty or while traveling to or from duty.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES

Each student who participates in sports chooses a winter sport from group 1 and a summer sport from group 2. He is accepted into both clubs of his choice and stays with them throughout the year. If for any reason he does not join the club of his choice, he will be allocated to the sport he chose in Group 3.

A student who participates in a non-sports activity stays with the group of his choice for the full year. The two major competitions each year are the combined teachers' colleges' carnival in athletics and swimming. The two most important social events of the year are the Invitational Ball in June and the Graduation Ball in November.

Other highlights of the year are a welcome concert and a river cruise, usually held shortly after the college reopens. One day, however, is referred to as an occasion where the college openly participates in charitable work.

Proposed amendments will be presented to the first full meeting of the Council for consideration. The function of the Finance Committee is to give advice and make recommendations to the Council on the expenditure of Council funds. a) The Council will appoint a Social Committee which will be composed of:. The function of the Social Committee is to make recommendations to the Council on the conduct of the College's social activities. a) At the beginning of each College year, the Executive will recommend a committee for the determination of College grants to the Council.

This committee shall be representative of all phases of the College's activities and shall be presented to the Council for approval at its second annual meeting. An inventory of club equipment will be submitted to the management committee at the end of each season or each year. The President and Chairman - who will be the student chosen by the Council as the Representative of the General Clubs.

Secretary - who shall be the student elected by the council as assistant club representative. The first meeting of the club committee must be held no later than one week before the start of Wednesday's club activities. Any student representing the College in:. i) the first team in any sport (ii) the inter-college athletics carnival (iii) the inter-college swimming carnival. be entitled to wear the appropriate insignia.

The method of dividing students into competitive groups for the inter-college competitions will be decided by the Council each year.
