He needs to know himself and the child, to understand his material and to be aware of the art and techniques of his teaching. If the student is to become purposeful and skilled in the classroom, he needs a teaching philosophy and the resources for a sound technique.

THE HISTORY OF

MELBOURNE TEACHERS COLLEGE

Much of the tradition that has grown up around the college was formed during the long period when Dr. In 1964 he decided to give a historical emphasis to the seventy-fifth anniversary of the opening of the college at its present site.

COURSES

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Although the student is equipped to teach in all departments of the school, he pays special attention to a particular age group during his education. Four periods will be allocated to each subject selected, but one of the four will be a teaching period attended by the students in rotation. The number of core subjects is reduced to allow the student to progress further in professional skills and knowledge in selected areas of the school curriculum.

He continues to gain practical experience in various elementary school departments and is instructed in teaching methods and school organization. The goals of the course are to develop students' cultural background, enrich their knowledge and appreciation of art, and provide them with opportunities for artistic expression. Selected participants are given this one-year course as a continuation of the primary teacher course, or as a free course after three years of experience as a classified teacher in the primary sector of the teaching service.

The course gives them an understanding of the special needs of slow-learning and disabled children, and trains them in the specific skills necessary to qualify them for employment in remedial centers, opportunity remedial centers, opportunity grades, special schools for the mentally retarded . and for physically challenged children, demonstration units and tutorial centres. The course trains students to administer and organize school and college libraries, to acquire a knowledge and appreciation of children's literature, to understand children's reading habits, and to make the library the focal point of the educational program of the school or college to establish

A selection of seminars will be offered based on student interest and staff and faculty resources. The general theme of this study is "school in society" and will be examined from a different perspective in each year of the course. Reflection on the role of the school as a social institution. Anthropological Evidence on the Formation of Youth. The place of the school in the modern Western community. A teacher in society.

A study of education systems in selected countries, with emphasis on current trends and problems. A broad view of current writing to observe the attention given to the problems of the individual adapting to society. A Practical Course in Speaking and Writing A. Prepared and improvised readings, and simple dramatic situations B. Developing an awareness of the subtleties and distinctions which the careful use of language can achieve. iii) TEACHING PROCEDURES Handwriting, spelling, vocabulary, usage.

A survey of the main currents of humanistic and Christian idealism, with some account of the changing moods of poetic expression. A study of twentieth-century writers already recognized as major contributors to the development of the novel.

Anatomy and Physiology An optional unit A more detailed study of the human body, its systems and their healthy maintenance. An examination of the philosophical, psychological and physiological bases of health and physical education, and their relevance to the primary school program and teaching method. A critical evaluation of the syllabus content, and the influence of these findings on the development of health and physical education in the primary school.

Organizing and administering the practical aspects of the school's health and physical education program. A study of the social and political development of Australia from the first settlement to the present day.

THE STUDENTSHIP

At the end of the course, overall academic and teaching rankings are achieved; these are combined to give a final college ranking that determines classification and eligibility for an extension course. To complete their courses while in the field, they must notify the principal of their intention at the beginning of the year; they will then be given the required work to be sent to the college for consideration. There is no ranking at this point; their surnames are listed in alphabetical order to comply with the requirements of the Education Service Act.

After successful completion of their first two years of the course, they gain a place on the classified roll on merit. Each student pays a composite fee that varies according to the course and the year of the course taken. Private students who can be admitted to the various courses are required to pay tuition fees.

A branch of the Commercial Bank of Australia operates within the college for the convenience of students. It is located in the lobby of the new block, near the entrance to the gymnasium.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Students are medically examined and undergo X-rays on two occasions - before starting the course and again at the end of the course. These tests determine their suitability for teaching and eligibility to participate in the state pension scheme. It is intended to represent a cross-section of the best college thought in creative writing.

It is used to provide information to staff and students about current and upcoming events, and matters of administration. Public telephones for the convenience of students are installed at the following locations:. i) in the verandah of the lecture block north of the cafeteria (ii) just inside the main entrance at Faraday Street. Every student is covered under the provisions of the law for injuries received or certain illnesses contracted while on duty or while traveling to or from duty.

A student who is injured while traveling to or from college or on official business must report the accident and/or injury to the General Office. It is the student's responsibility to complete this form with a medical certificate attached to support the statements made therein.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES

Going forward, participation in any tour or camping trip organized by the Student Council Travel Club or a member of staff will be voluntary. Where specialist interests are catered for, entry to the excursion is by invitation of the sponsor; however, if additional spots are available, individual students may apply to be included in the party. Known as White's Corner, the town borders an extensive state forest and is within easy reach of the snowfields and navigable waters of the Latrobe River.

Electricity and water supply have been laid and by June 197o the basic block will be built. The two main social events of the year are the Homecoming Dance in April and the Prom in November. At these events, the school welcomes official guests from the administrative and inspection staff, representatives of other teaching establishments and school principals.

Other highlights of the year are a welcome concert and a river trip, which are usually held shortly after the college reopens. One of the unpublicized activities of college students is the volunteer work done to help underprivileged or disabled sections of the community.

Proposed amendments are submitted for review at the first full council meeting. The role of the Finance Committee is to advise and make recommendations to the Council on the use of Council funds. a) The council appoints a social committee consisting of: This committee represents all phases of the college's activities and is submitted for approval to the council at its second meeting of the year.

All awards are accompanied by certificates and announced at the meeting in the last two weeks of the academic year. a) The Service Awards Committee consists of the following members: i) Director or his representative on the Board. (ii) Two staff representatives on the Council. (iii) The executive body of the Council. At the end of each season or year, an inventory of club equipment is submitted to the Club Committee. Organizing initial meetings of the club, recruiting members early in the year and obtaining assistance from staff as needed. a) The Club Committee will consist of:. i) President and Chairman – the student elected by the Council as the general representative of the club.

The first meeting of the club committee must be held no later than one week before the start of Wednesday's club activities. The method of dividing the students into competition groups for the intercollegiate competitions is determined each year by the council.
