THE HISTORY OF

MELBOURNE TEACHERS COLLEGE

A large part of the tradition that grew up around the faculty was formed during the long period when Dr. In 1964, he decided to give historical emphasis to the seventy-fifth anniversary of the opening of the faculty at its current location.

PROGRESS THROUGH THE COURSE

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Although the student is equipped to teach in all departments of the school, he pays special attention to a certain age group during his training. The number of basic subjects is reduced so that the student can progress in professional skills and knowledge within selected areas of the school's curriculum. He continues to gain practical experience in the primary school's various departments and is instructed in teaching methods and school organisation.

Four periods are assigned to each selected subject, but one of the liars will be a tutorial period attended by rotating students. A continuation of the major practical study carried out in the third year of the T.S.T.C. Painting Graphics Sculpture Pottery Design Woodworking Metalcraft Needlecraft. Selected participants are given this one-year course as an extension of the primary teacher course, or as a tree course after three years' experience as a classified teacher in the primary sector of the teaching service.

The course enables them to understand the special needs of slow learning and disabled children and trains them in the special skills required to train them for placement in correctional centres, remedial centres, casual classes, special schools for the mentally challenged. and for physically challenged children, demonstration units and training centers. The goals of the course are to develop the students' cultural background, to enrich their knowledge and appreciation of art, and to enable them to express themselves artistically. The course trains students to manage and organize school and university libraries, to know and respect children's literature, to understand children's reading habits and to establish the library as the center of the educational program of the school or college.

When the site is fully developed, the current 1939 Arts and Crafts Building complex and Melbourne Teachers College will have been demolished. Also during this year, the Creative Arts building will begin at the southern end of the Swanston Street frontage.

A continuation of the work of groups A and B of Muziek t. ü, HISTORY, LITERATURE AND PRACTICE OF MUSIC. This year, the study will mainly focus on works by the Romantics from the nineteenth century. Child development I. Characteristic stages of growth and development and their implications for the health and physical education of the primary school child.

An examination of the organizational elements involved in effective teaching of the primary curriculum. An examination of the philosophical, psychological, and physiological bases of health and physical education, and their relation to the elementary school curriculum and method of instruction. A critical evaluation of curriculum content and the impact of these findings on the development of health and physical education in primary school.

Organization and management of practical aspects of the school health and physical education program. A Study of the Effects of European Penetration into the Far East in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries. An extension of the Asian studies work t, with Vietnam and Indonesia selected for special study.

Construction and demonstration of scientific experiments in the physical and biological sciences. iv) ASSIGNMENTS Preparation of Classroom Experiments Field Trip Reports.

TRAINING SCHOOLS

Each student pays a college composite fee, which varies according to the course and year of the course taken, and an S.R.C. Private students who may be admitted to the various courses must pay tuition fees.

THE STUDENTSHIP

Those who do not achieve a satisfactory standard in any subject may be employed by the Ministry of Education at a reduced status and salary. To complete field courses, they must notify the principal of their intention at the beginning of the year; then they will be given the required work, which must be forwarded to the faculty for consideration. Once in the field, his competence will be assessed by the district inspector, who will inform the faculty of the desired standard achieved.

There is no order at this stage; their surnames are listed in alphabetical order to meet the requirements of the Teaching Service Act. On successful completion of their first two years of the course, they are given a place on the classified list by merit. However, only in the sixth year of service from the date of admission to college will students be eligible for private reports and assessment.

Each year extended study stays are awarded to a number of students who have successfully completed the Diploma of Teaching (Primary) or Trained Primary Teacher's Certificate course. Studies towards a degree in Arts, Science, Commerce, Music, Humanities, Economics and Politics can be undertaken at the Universities of Melbourne, Monash or La Trobe, wherever such courses are available. All university course awards are subject to gaining admission to a Victorian university.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Presentation of the card is required for: distribution of reimbursement checks payment of college fees. transaction of business with the college sub-branch of the Commercial Bank of Australia Limited. Students are medically examined and undergo X-rays on two occasions - before starting the course and again at the end of the course. These tests determine their suitability for teaching and eligibility to participate in the state pension scheme.

It is intended to represent a cross-section of the best faculty thought in the field of creative writing. During this week, students are relieved of lectures in order to prepare for exams. Public telephones are located at the following locations for the convenience of students:. i) on the Lecture Hall Porch to the north of the Cafe (ii) just outside the main entrance on Faraday Street.

Class schedules at this college are complicated due to the large number of courses taught, the constant movement of students from the college to schools, and the restrictions imposed by the housing of tutorial groups that meet at the college due to its central location. Every student is covered under the provisions of the law for injuries sustained or certain illnesses contracted while on duty or while traveling to or from duty. It is the student's responsibility to complete this form and enclose a medical certificate to support the statements made therein.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES

Teams from the Police College, Larnook Domestic Arts College and Monash Secondary Teachers' College compete in some sports competitions. In the future, participation in a tour or camp organized by a student representative council or a member of staff will be voluntary. If specialized interests are taken into account, access to the excursion is by sponsor's invitation; However, if additional places become available, individual students may apply to be included in the company.

The site is within easy reach of snowfields and the navigable waters of the Latrobe River. Accommodation will be in A-frame cabins and in later stages a kitchen, a dining hall, lecture rooms, workshops and storage rooms will be added. students will attend at least one camp during 1971. Arrangements for holding these camps during teaching rounds have been completed, and timetables will be published early in the year.

Sec.) students are expected to attend camps during the year to carry out projects related to their course. Students will be provided with opportunities to work with children and teachers of rural schools in the district, and various faculties will organize special activities or project camps. One of the unpublished activities of students is voluntary work, which is done to help parts of the community that are neglected or handicapped.

Proposed amendments are submitted for review at the first full council meeting. The role of the Finance Committee is to advise and make recommendations to the Council on the use of Council funds. a) The council appoints a social committee, which consists of: The task of the social committee is to make recommendations to the council on the implementation of the University's social activities. a) At the beginning of each academic year, the executive director recommends to the council a committee to determine student awards.

This committee represents all phases of the College's activities and is submitted for approval to the Council at its second meeting of the year. All awards will be accompanied by certificates and will be announced at an assembly during the last two weeks of the academic year. a) The work awards committee consists of the following members: i) The director or his representative in the Council (ii) Two staff representatives in the Council (iii) The Executive Council of the Council. Organize initial club meetings, recruit membership at the beginning of the year and recruit HR assistance as needed. a The Clubs Commission consists of: i, the president and the chairperson - who is a student elected by the council as the main representative of the clubs.

The first meeting of the Club Committee will be held no later than one week before the start of Wednesday club activities. Any student representing the College in:. i) the first team of any sport (ii) the inter-college athletics carnival (iii) the inter-college swimming carnival. will be entitled to wear the appropriate badge on the badge pocket of the official college jacket. The method of dividing students into competitive groups for the inter-college competitions will be decided by the Council each year.
