MATHEMATICS z A compulsory basic unit (i) BACKGROUND IN ELEMENTARY MATHEMATICS Sets and their use, the evolution and the structure of the number system, basic operations with numbers, an understanding of measurement and spatial relationships

The relevance of these topics to the development of mathematical concepts in the primary school

(ii) STATISTICS

Attainment of competence in basic mathematical skills

A brief introduction to basic statistics and statistical procedures, and their relevance to the work of teachers in the primary schools

(iii) MATHEMATICS IN THE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Aims and principles of method, structure of the course of study and related methods, with particular reference to the use of structured materials and concrete 'aids.

MATHEMATICS 2

An optional unit, with some election within the syllabus Topic (i) and two other topics will he taken.

(i) SCHOOL MATHEMATICS

An extension of topics (i) and (iii) of MATHEMATICS t, and a study of the structure of, and the approach to, junior secondary mathematics

(ii) STATISTICS

An extension and enrichment of topic (ii) of MATHEMATICS t (iii) GEOMETRY

A study of the development of geometry to include Euclidean geometry, projective geometry, non-Euclidean geometries, and topology

(iv) HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF MATHEMATICS A study of some of the major contributions to the development of mathematics.

MATHEMATICS 3

An optional unit, with some election within the syllabus Topic (i) and two other topics will be taken.

(i) CURRENT TRENDS AND RESEARCH An investigation of new approaches to mathematics

(ii) INTRODUCTION TO MODERN ALGEBRA

Set theory, Boolean algebra, mathematical structures, determinants and matrices

(iii) APPLICATION OF MATHEMATICS

The use of mathematics in other subjects and in the world around us e.g. computers, logic

(iv) SELECTED TOPIC Students will choose their own topic in this section.

MUSIC

MUSIC z A compulsory basic unit

(i) PRACTICAL STUDY There will be three groups in operation:

A. For students electing a major study B. For students electing a sub-major study C. For students taking a single unit of study.

Students will choose their own instrument, and standards of performance for individuals will be determined by their previous experience.

A knowledge of the theory and grammar of' music will be developed through activities, both vocal and instrumental—using xylophones, recorders, percussion instruments, autoharps, and Orfl=type instruments.

(i) PRACTICAL STUDY A continuation of the work of groups A and B of Music t

(ü, HISTORY, LITERATURE, AND PRACTICE OF MUSIC In this year.- the study will be concerned mainly with works of the Romanticists of the nineteenth century.

(iii) MUSIC MAKING

Vocal technique and application, sight singing and aural training Instrumental accompanying technique, harmonization, improvisation, .end creativity

Vocal and instrumental ensemble and arrangement.

(i) PRACTICAL STUDY A continuation of the work of Group A of Music 2.

(ii, HISTORY, LITERATURE, ANI) PRACTICE OF MUSIC Extension of the topic of Music 2, concerned mainly with music of the twentieth century

(iii) MUSIC MAKING Compulsory topic:

An examination of various aims and principles of education and their relevance and application to health and physical education

(ii) ORGANIZATION AND ADMINISTRATION Establishing the Program

Factors influencing program selection Implementing the Program

An examination of the organizational elements involved in the efficient teaching of the primary syllabus

(iii) PRACTICAL

The emphasis in practical work will be placed on movement analysis, skill progressions, and teaching situations. It is expected that students will work towards improving personal performance levels within the various areas of the practical program.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH 2 An optional unit (i) FOUNDATIONS

Anatomy and Physiology

A more detailed study of the human body, its systems and their healthy maintenance. Particular emphasis will be placed on the inter-relatedness of the various systems.

Child Development H

A deeper study of growth and developmental patterns, and of individual differences within these patterns

Principles II

An examination of the philosophical, psychological, and physiological bases of health and physical education, and their relevance to the primary school program and teaching method

(ii) ORGANIZATION AND ADMINISTRATION

A critical evaluation of the syllabus content, and the influence of these findings on the development of health and physical education in the primary school

Organization and administration of the practical aspects of the school health and physical education program

(iii) PRACTICAL

The student will continue to develop his ability in movement analysis and his proficiency within the various areas of the practical program.

Each student will be expected to make full use of the facilities available.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH 3 An optional unit With a background and understanding of the subject provided by previous study, the student should be ready to proceed with specialization.

He will be given an opportunity to select areas of particular interest to examine in depth.

As in the second year personalized physical activity is regarded as fun- damental to this course.

(i) THEORY

Three areas broadly described as Health Education, Movement Theory and Measurement, and Systems and Philosophies will be studied.

(ii) PRACTICAL

In addition to the general and compulsory activities of the course, the student will specialize within at least one of the following areas:

Dance Gymnastics Swimming Games Athletics.

A study of the structure and institutions of our society; the objectives, the development of social awareness and social competence.

(ii) AUSTRALIAN POLITICAL INSTITUTIONS

An examination of the development, function, and effectiveness of our political institutions.

(iii) SOCIAL STUDIES IN THE PRIMARY SCHOOL Familiarization with the aims and content of courses of study in social studies. Units of work in social studies.

Students will choose one area ASIAN STUDIES t

A study of the effects of European penetration of the Far East in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. An evaluation of the reactions of China and Japan, and their modern roles as they conceived them.

A study of the history and politics of Australia and New Guinea with a view to understanding the present dilemmas confronting both peoples and administrations of each country.

SOCIAL SCIENCE 3 An optional unit

Students will choose one area ASIAN STUDIES 2

(Asian Studies t is a prerequisite for this year of study.)

An extension of the work of Asian Studies t, with Vietnam and Indonesia selected for special study.

A study of the economic and geographic factors at work in Australia and New Guinea and the way in which these influence human activity.
