Accounting

The subject Electronic Data Processing has been deleted.

Practical exercises involving the use of computers are to be introduced into the unit.

Accounting C4 (Auditing).

Economics

The syllabus of unit Economics C11 (Marxian Economics) has been varied and this change is reflected in the new name of the unit: Economics C11 (Marxian and Post-Keynesian Economics).

MATHEMATICS IN THE COMMERCE COURSE

The Faculty considers that a knowledge of mathematics is of considerable advantage to those planning a career in any area of commerce. The faculty encourages students who are able to do so to take mathematics in the senior years of secondary school.

A knowledge of mathematics is of increasing relevance in all Commerce disciplines. Within the Commerce degree, the second year subject, Statistical Method B, is compulsory. There are two streams in this subject. For Statistical Method B1 there is no prerequisite. There is also available a major sequence in Quantitative Methods and this includes the second version, Statistical Method 62.

This sequence comprises:

Year 1: Mathematics 1A, or Mathematics 1 C. or

General Mathematics (Social Sciences)

(These subjects are taught by the Science faculty)

Year 2: Statistical Method 62. (This has one of Mathematics 1 A, Mathematics 1 C or General Mathematics as a prerequisite and is taught at a more advanced level than Statistical Method B1).

Year 3: Two units chosen from the three third year units in Quantitative area, namely Economics C16: Quantitative Methods; Economics C17: Econometric Theory; Economics C18: Applied Econometrics.

An information sheet entitled Mathematics in the Commerce Course is distributed to interested new first year students each year at the time of initial enrolment in February.

COMPUTERS ANO THE DEPARTMENT OF ACCOUNTING

In 1981 the Department of Accounting introduced some computing studies, mainly programming, in Accounting A. Computer-related work was incorporated into Accounting B in 1982 and will be included in selected Accounting C units in 1983. Because of these changes in the teaching of electronic data processing the subject Electronic Data Processing was offered for the last time in 1982. The course Accounting C7 is available to those students who wish to deal with more specialized aspects of electronic data processing.
