Flmders Medical Centre

The teaching and research fac1ht1es of the School of Med1c1ne are located w1th1n the Fhnders Medical Centre, a general teaching hospital situated on a 17 hectare site ad101n1ng the Un1vers1ty campus In the Fhnders Medical Centre for the first time 1n Australia a school of med1c1ne and its associated teaching hospital have been planned and built as one 1nshtut1on enabling the total integration of the three essential functions of patient care teaching and research About 510 hospital beds are available 1n the Medical Centre together with teaching fac11it1es for medical and nursing students and full supporting fac1ht1es The professors appointed by the University Council to head the academic departments have been appointed by the Medical Centre as the Head of Service 1n all chn1cal and d1agnost1c departments Many members of the hospital medical and sc1enlif1c staff have been accorded academic status 1n recogn1hon of thetr s1gn1f1cant contribution to the BM BS teaching programme

The Chancellor's Literary and Arhshc Fund

The Chancellors Literary and Art1st1c Fund has been established to enable the Un1vers1ty to purchase literary and artistic works The rules relating to the Fund are published below

1 There shall be a charitable fund for the purposes of the University to be known as the Chancellor s Literary and Artistic Fund 2 The trustees of the fund shall be the

Chancellor the Vice Chancellor and the Registrar or their respective nominees A nominee shall hold office during the pleasure of the officer who nominated him or the successor of that officer

3 The assets of the fund shall consist of such gifts whether of moneys secunhes or real or personal property of any kind as the trustees may from time to time accept and of the investments from time to time representing the same

4 Sub1ect to any special trusts attaching to any particular gift or gifts made to the Fund the trustees may retain or convert into money any assets of the fund not already cons1st1ng of money and may invest any moneys requiring investment in interest beanng investments (whether of an authorised trustee character or not) or 1n shares 1n pubhc companies with power at any time to vary or transpose investments

5 The income which shall anse from the investments may be accumulated or may 1n the sole discretion of the Chancellor be whole or partly expended in the purchase or publication of books or other printed or written material or 1n the commissioning or purchase of works of art of any kind Anything so acquired shall be the property of the University There shall be power to resort to capital 1f the Chancellor shall 1n any case so direct

6 It shall be a governing intent 1n the acqu1slt1on of any such things as are mentioned 1n paragraph S that any thing so acquired would not 1n the op1n1on of the Chancellor have been at that hme purchased published or comm1ss1oned out of the general funds of the Un1vers1ty

7 The Chancellor may appoint an advisory panel to assist him 1n executing the purpose of the Fund and the respective members of the panel shall hold office during his pleasure

The Charles Bright Rare Books Fund

The Charles Bright Rare Books Fund has been established to enable the Un1vers1ty to purchase rare books The Fund 1n1tlally comprised a donation made by Sir Charles Bright pnor to his death for the establishment of the Fund and other donations subsequently made 1n memory of Str Charles a former Chancellor of the Un1vers1ty The rules relating to the Fund are published below

1 There shall be a charitable fund for the purposes of the Un1vers1ty to be known as the Charles Bnght Rare Books Fund

2 The Trustees of the Fund shall be the Chancellor the Vice Chancellor the Chair person of the Finance Committee, and the Un1vers1ty Librarian or their respective nominees A nominee shall hold office dunng the pleasure of the officer who nominated him or the successor of that officer

3 The assets of the Fund shall consist of such gifts whether of monies secunhes or real or personal property of any kind as the Trustees may from time to time accept and of the investments from time to time representing the same

6 The amount of the income detemuned by the Trustees shall be expended at the sole discretion of the Un1vers1ty L1branan on the purchase of rare books whether ong1nal or reproduction or manuscnpts of 1ntnns1c interest or beauty Anything so acquired shall be the property of the Un1vers1ty

7 It shall be a governing intent 1n the acqu1s1 lion of any such things as are mentioned 1n paragraph 6 that anything so acquired would not 1n the op1n1on of the University L1branan have been at that time purchased out of the general funds of the Un1verslly

8 Each item acquired through the Fund shall carry a book plate of a fonn approved by the Council

The JM Mam Bequest

The late Mr JM Main Reader 1n History from 1966 1984 has left a substantial bequest to the Un1vers1ty for the purchase of books m1crofdms maps and other materials and documents of a like nature relating to Australian history to be used 1n the Library A management committee compns1ng the Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor, the Professors of History and the University Librarian has been appointed to adVIse Council on the adm1n1strat1on of the bequest Dec1s1ons about spec1f1c purchases for the L1bracy are made by the Un1vers1ty L1branan in consultation with members of the D1sc1phne of History

D1stlngu1shed Service Award

The Council has resolved to establish a D1stingu1shed Semce Award for persons who have given outstanding service to the Un1vers1ty It 1s the Council's 1ntent1on that the standard of service menhng the award should be such that 1t 1s granted only as a rare honour The award will take the fonn of the silver medal incorporating the Un1vers1ty 1ns1gn1a and 1nscnbed with the name of the rec1p1ent

The follow1ng rules shall apply to the award 1 Nomination for an award shall be made to the

Honorary Degrees Committee by the Chancellor or the Vice Chancellor

2 The granting of an award shall be approved by the Council on the recommendation of the Honorary Degrees Committee

3 Each award shall be presented to the recipient by the Chancellor at a Council meeting a Confernng of Degrees Ceremony or at some other appropriate Un1vers1ty function

The fund was estabhshed by a donation from a d1shngu1shed scholar in psychology who wishes to remain anonymous The purpose of the fund 1s to contnbute towards the costs of supporting V1s1t1ng Scholars In Psychology The rules relating to the fund are published below

1 The v1s1tlng scholarship, to be called the D1sttngu1shed Scholar 1n Psychology will 140

2 The scholarship 1s intended for visits of at least one month and preferably of longer duration 3 The Endowment Fund will be used to finance

Mer1tor1ous Service Award

The Council has resolved to establish a Mer1tonous Service Award for persons who have given valuable and loyal service to the Un1vers1ty over a long penod

There will be two criteria for the award 1 Valuable and loyal seiv1ce 2 Service over a long period

Both cntena are to be taken into account 1n making the award While a penod of twenty years would be regarded as appropnate for the second cntenon this may be vaned 1n 1nd1vidual cases If desired

The lollowmg rules shall apply to the award 1 The relevant head (1e Dean or Director of

Adm1n1stration and Registrar) will submit nom1nat1ons to the Vice Chancellor on an annual basis

2 The Vice Chancellor shall be responsible for determ1n1ng the awards

3 The award shall take the form of letters of commendation from the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor

4 Awards shall be reported to the Council by the Vice Chancellor

Vice Chancellors Award for Excellence 1n

Teaching Title of the Award

Vice Chancellors Award for Excellence in Teaching

Nature of the Award

(1) Up to five awards will be made annually to academic staff Judged to be outstanding teachers Up to two of the awards will be made to academic staff at the level of Lecturer A (2) Each recipient will be presented with a

Certificate of Excellence 1n Teaching and a pnze of $3 000 to be used to further enhance teaching excellence within the Un1vers1ty Rec1p1ents will be expected to contnbute to educational development w1th1n the Un1vers1ty by commun1cahng their skills to fellow academic staff The spec1f1c nature of that contnbutton will be negotiated with each winner

Purpose of the Award

The purposes of the awards are to

(a) recognise and reward teaching excellence, and (b) encourage teaching excellence through this

recogn1hon and ensuring staff development achv1ttes

El1g1b1l1ty for an Award

(1) All members of academic staff tenured or on contract of greater than 12 months duration with full time equivalence of at least 0 4 are ebg1ble for an award

(2) Rec1p1ents must have been employed tn a teaching post for at least three years w1th1n the Un1vers1ty

(3) Award winners will not be ehg1ble for re nomination for 5 years

The Selection Committee

The Selection Committee for the awards will consist of the follow1ng members

o External members with expertise 1n teaching and learning

0 Student member nominated by the Academic Board

The Committee will receive nom1nat1ons, examine supporting information and make recommend ations to the Academic Board on the recipients of the awards

Crztena for Measunng Excellence

As a guide to 1udg1ng excellence 1n teaching, the Committee wtll take into account some or all of the following cntena

(a) interest and enthusiasm 1n undertaking teaching and promoting student learning (b) command of sub1ect matter and explo1tatton of

recent development 1n the field of study (c) keen and sympathetic part1c1patton 1n gu1d1ng

and adv1s1ng students and understanding their needs,

(d) responsiveness to colleague and student feedback on teaching

(e) ab1hty to organise course matenal and present It cognently and 1mag1natively

(f) ability to assess student learning and to provide students with worthwhile feedback, (g) ab1hty to stimulate cunos1ty and independent

learning 1n all students and creative work 1n advanced students

(h) evidence of innovation 1n course design and delivery

(1) evidence of successful superv1s1on of post graduate students

Nom1nat1on for the Award

(1) Each nom1nahon for the award shall be made with the consent of the nominee by at least three members of the academic staff students, and/or former students

(2) Nom1nahons should be 1n writing and specify the grounds on which the staff member 1s being nominated

(3) Nommat10ns shall be forwarded through the relevant Head of Faculty who will comment on the nom1nahon before forwarding 1t to the Committee

(4) The committee will require each nominee to provide a teaching portfolio

Not1ficat1on of the results of the Committee s deliberations will be made after they have been approved by Academic Board Cert1f1cates wlil be presented at an appropriate ceremony

PRIZES AND SCHOLARSHIPS*

Chancellor's Letters of Commendation The Examination Boards on behalf of the Council may award a Chancellors Letter of Commendation to a student whose academic performance has been judged to be outstanding The award shall be made on the recommendation of the Examination Boards of the Faculties adm1n1stenng the degree or diploma for which the student is enrolled

Chancellor's Medals

The followmg rules shall apply for the award of Chancellors Medals

1 Chancellor's Medals shall be of such material and such design and be 1nscnbed 1n such manner as may be approved by the Council 2 The Council may award a Chancellor s Medal

to a student whose academic performance has been judged to be outstanding The award shall be made on the recommendation of the Examtnahons Board of the Faculty adm1n1 stering the degree or diploma for which the student 1s enrolled

3 A Chancellors Medal shall be awarded only If there 1s a student (or students) of outstanding merit To be ehg1ble for the award of Chancellor s Medal a student must

(a) have been awarded a degree or diploma of the Un1vers1ty being either under graduate or postgraduate but excluding research degrees and

(b) have demonstrated academic merit which 1n the op1n1on of the Exam1n ahons Board 1s of an outstanding character

4 Chancellors Medals shall be available for award each year to students of the Un1vers1ty completing a degree/diploma 1n each d1sc1 phne of study tdenhfled 1n Rule 1 of Statute 43

5 A Chancellor s Medal shall not be awarded to the rec1p1ent of a Un1vers1ty Medal for the same degree

Umvemty Medals*

The following rules shall apply for the award of University Medals

1 Un1vers1ty Medals shall be of such material and such design and be 1nscnbed 1n such manner as may be approved by the Council 2 A Un1vers1ty Medal shall be awarded 1n a

faculty only if there ts a student (or students) of outstanding ment To be ehgtble for the award of a Un1vers1ty Medal a student must (a) have been awarded first class honours by

the Exam1nat1ons Board of the faculty or have completed the requirements for an 142

undergraduate degree of four or more years duration (but which do not have an honours component) and

(b) have demonstrated academic ment which 1n the op1n1on of the Examinations Board 1s of an outstanding character

3 Three Un1vers1ty Medals shall be available 1n each faculty for award each year to students of the Un1vers1ty

4 The award of the medals available under rule 3 above may be approved by the Examinations Boards of the respective faculties

5 In exceptional circumstances the Exam1n atlons Board of any faculty may 1n any year recommend the award of an additional Un1vers1ty Medal Such recommendations shall be submitted to the Academic Board which may after consideration of the exceptional circumstances involved 1n each case approve the award of one add1t1onal Un1vers1ty Medal 1n each or any of the faculties concerned
