The following members of staff spent leave overseas:

Dr D. W. Bennett, Civil Engineering, spent the major part of leave from June, 1976 to January, 1977 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Cam- bridge Systematics Incorporated, Boston. He also visited other agencies and institutions in North America, Malaysia and England.

Dr J. A. Bowden, Centre for the Study of Higher Education, was an Honorary Research Fellow at the Teaching Services Centre of the University of Exeter during leave from May to December, 1977. Short visits were made to several institutions in the United Kingdom and Europe.

Dr W. Boyle, Microbiology, spent the major part of leave from February, 1976 to February, 1977 in the Immunology Division, Research Laboratories of G. D. Searle

& Co., United Kingdom, as well as visiting research and teaching laboratories in London, Oxford, Manchester, Cambridge and Glasgow and participating In Immunology meetings in London, Cambridge and Copenhagen.

Mr A. J. Bradbrook, Law, spent study leave from 24 May, 1976 until 28 February, 1977 in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong.

Professor M. N. Brearley, Mathematics (RAAF Academy) was based at the Re- habilitation Engineering Center of the Children's Hospital at Stanford, U.S.A., for nine months during leave from December, 1976 to December, 1977. He also visited other institutions in the U.S.A. and the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow as well as several teaching, research and rehabilitation centres in the United Kingdom.

Mr G. Burrows, Accounting, undertook research in universities in Britain and North America during leave from 1 March, 1976 to 1 February, 1977.

Dr I. Calder, Organic Chemistry, visited laboratories in universities and industry in the United States and England during sabbatical leave from October, 1976 to February, 1977.

Dr P. Clancy, French, spent the major part of study leave from March to August, 1977 in Paris and London completing research on Eighteenth Century journals and journalists at the Bibliotheque Nationale and the British Museum Library.

Dr H. B Collins, Optometry, presented papers at the California Optometric Asso- ciation Pacific Congress in Honolulu and at the Eye Research Institute of Retina Foundation, Boston; and had discussions with academics, clinicians, and re-

searchers from institutions in Massachusetts during leave from 16 February to 8 March, 1977.

Mr P. J. Connor, Classical Studies, during the major part of study leave from December, 1976 to December, 1977 worked in the Museum of Classical Archaeology, Cambridge, and visited other museums and institutions in the United Kingdom and Europe. The final part of leave was spent at the University of Notre Dame, U.S.A., with visits to nearby collections of Greek pottery.

Dr C. A. Coppel, Indonesian and Malayan Studies, spent study leave from June to December, 1977 working on field research in Central Java and at the Museum Library in Jakarta. Visits were also made to Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia.

Mr W. Culican, History, worked in Tehran and visited excavations and archaeolo- gical sites in Southern Iran during leave from March to September, 1977, He also visited institutions in Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Holland, Germany and Switzerland.

Mr T. J. Cummins, Graduate School of Business Administration, spent leave from July, 1976 to January, 1977 studying course developments in Organizational Be- haviour and Pedagogical Methods in both graduate school and advanced manage- ment eaucation. He was a Visiting Fellow at the Oxford Management Centre and visited the Cranfield Institute of Technology, Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration and Yale University.

Dr J. F. G. Darby, Physics (RAAF Academy) divided his study leave from May to November, 1977 between the Clarendon Laboratory, Oxford, and the Division of Ship Science, Department of Aeronautics, University of Southampton. Brief visits also were made to the Universities of Liverpool and Singapore.

Mr T. P. Dobson, English, pursued studies at the Bodleian and Oxford English Faculty libraries during leave from January, 1976 to January, 1977.

Dr L A. Douglas, Agriculture and Forestry, spent the first two months of leave from August, 1976 to August, 1977 at the Goethe Institut, Iserlohn, Germany, followed by ten months research at the Instut fur Biochemie des Bodens, Brauns- chweig. He also visited universities and research establishments in England, Scotland and West Germany, and the Texas A and M University.

Mr A. E. Ferguson, Electrical Engineering, spent the first three months of leave from February, 1977 to September, 1977 at the University of Canterbury, Christ- church. In Europe, he visited universities and institutes in Germany, Holland and France, and for two months worked at Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh.

Professor H. A. J. Ford, Law, spent three months of leave from May, 1977 to November, 1977 in the United Kingdom at the Bodleian Law Library, Oxford, and at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of London. He also visited universities and institutes in Australia, France and Germany, as well as the Uni- versity of Southampton.

Dr G. Gardner, Psychology, conducted seminars in Industrial Relations and Em- ployee Participation during six months' leave from October, 1976 to March, 1977 at the University of Lancaster. He also prepared papers on previous research for presentation at conferences and universities in England.

Mr B. J. Gilbert, Fine Arts, spent the first four weeks of sabbatical leave from 6 August, 1976 to 1 March, 1977 studying architectural remains in Athens and visiting archaeological sites on the Greek mainland and neighbouring islands, followed by a visit to the Vatican and three months in Florence.

Mr P. Gill, Education, spent the major part of leave from 1 January, 1976 to 28 February, 1977 at the University of Leeds. He also visited the Universities of London and Birmingham.

Mr C. K. Grant, Geology, during leave from July, 1976 to March, 1977, visited

institutions in Honolulu, California, Colorado, Texas, Florida and New York in the United States, and also in Canada and the United Kingdom.

Dr R. D. Harcourt, Physical Chemistry, spent 12 months as a Visiting Professor in the Chemistry Department at Cornell University, U.S.A., during leave from August, 1976 to November, 1977. The final two months of leave were spent in the Institute of Theoretical Chemistry at the Georgia Augusta University, Gottingen,

Mr K. D. Hay, Dental Science, during study leave from 25 March to 23 April, 1977 attended two associated conferences in Copenhagen, and also visited a number of institutions in the United Kingdom.

Professor R. W. Home, History and Philosophy of Science, was an Academic Visitor to the Department of History of Science and Technology at Imperial College, London, during study leave from October, 1976 to December, 1977. He also visited a number of libraries and institutions in the United Kingdom and Paris, before spending his final month in North America.

Professor V. D. Hopper, Physics (RAAF Academy), during study leave from July to December, 1977 took the opportunity to visit several countries to discuss plans with a number of scientists.

Dr D. J. de L. Home, Psychiatry, attended the International Congress of Behaviour Therapy at Uppsala, Sweden, during leave from 13 August to 5 September, 1977 He also spent six days in London at Guy's Hospital and the B.L.A.T. Centre for Medical and Health Education.

Mrs J. Howlett, Graduate School of Business Administration, observed the work of the Human Services Manpower Development Project at the State University of New Jersey, Rutgers College, during study leave from January to June, 1977.

She also had discussions on developments in management education for women, particularly at Stanford and Columbia Universities.

Dr D. S. Ironmonger, Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research, spent the major part of leave from 1 September, 1976 to 31 August, 1977 at Nuffield College, Oxford. He also completed a report on social and economic data systems for UNESCO and expanded contacts with economists at universities in England, France and Japan.

Dr D. Jenssen, Meteorology, spent sabbatical leave from November, 1976 to April, 1977 as a Research Fellow at the Co-operative Institute for Research on Environmental Science, University of Colorado. He also spent one week at the University of Wisconsin.

Mr I. H. Johnson, Conservative Dentistry, visited the Department of Dental Science, Royal College of Surgeons of England during leave from January, 1976 to February, 1977. He also attended symposia and visited other dental institutions in England and Scotland.

Mr T. J. Kelly, English, prepared articles for publication during study leave at the University of Cambridge from January, 1976 to February, 1977.

Dr J. J. Koliha, Mathematics, worked on a joint research project with Professor J. Bachar at the California State University, as well as participating in seminars there and at the University of California, Los Angeles, during leave from 1 August,

1976 to 31 August, 1977.

Professor S. J. Leach, Biochemistry, spent study leave from July, 1976 to January, 1977 as a Visiting Professor at Cornell University. He also visited colleagues at the University of Madison in the United States, York University in the United Kingdom, and the University of Barcelona, Spain.

Professor R. R. H. Lovell, Medicine (RMH), attended and contributed to the Internationales Symposium der Herzfarkt in Vienna during leave from 29 March to

26 April, 1977. He also conferred with colleagues at the University of Heidelberg, the University of Glasgow, and also in the United Kingdom.

Professor H. Luntz, Law, was a visitor attached to the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies at Wolfson College, Oxford, during study leave from August, 1976 to June, 1977.

Dr T. A. O'Donnell, Chemistry, during study leave from February, 1976 to February, 1977 worked at the Lawrence Laboratory, University of California.

Professor G. I. Opat, Physics, spent study leave from August, 1976 to August, 1977 at the University of British Columbia except for June last year which was spent at the Argonne National Laboratory, U.S.A.

Dr D. G. Parbery, Agriculture and Forestry, spent three months in the Department of Botany, University of Aberdeen, and seven months in the Department of Botany, Cambridge, during study leave from May, 1976 to May, 1977. He also visited a number of institutions in the United Kingdom and Europe.

Dr J. R. V. Prescott, Geography, visited Mauritius and southern Africa in order to improve his knowledge of the regional geography of these areas, during study leave from 23 February to 13 July, 1977. He also worked in England, collecting material on African boundaries in archives and libraries.

Professor P. Reade, Dental Medicine and Surgery, spent leave from 17 March to 22 April, 1977 attending the Vllth International Conference on Oral Biology in Copenhagen and the 55th General Session of the International Association for Dental Research, also in Copenhagen.

Dr M. D. Rickard, Veterinary Science, during study leave from July, 1976 to July. 1977 visited many laboratories in Asia, Africa, the United Kingdom, Europe, North America and New Zealand,

Mr A. K. Roberts, Surgery (Austin Hospital), attended three meetings in the United States during conference leave from 13 to 24 June, 1977. He also held discussions with members of vascular units at three institutions in Canada and the U.S.A.

Dr A. E. Samuel, Mechanical Engineering, spent leave from 1 December, 1975 to 10 January, 1977 at Queen Mary College of the University of London and the Design Division of Stanford University.

Professor H. F. Simon, East Asian Studies, was the guest of the Oriental Institute, Oxford, during study leave from August, 1976 to February, 1977. He later visited the University of Hong Kong.

Mr V. C. Speirs, Veterinary Science, spent study leave from June, 1976 to May, 1977 at the Equine Medicine and Surgery Department of the Veterinary School, University of Berne, Switzerland.

Dr J. D. Tange, Pathology, spent study leave from January, 1976 to February, 1977 at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford. He also attended some scientific meetings and delivered papers at Oxford and the Universities of Leicester and Surrey.

Dr B. M. Taylor, Philosophy, worked on the formal investigation of the semantics of natural language during leave from January, 1977 to June, 1977 at Oxford.

He read papers to a number of audiences in London, Bradford and Oxford.

Dr J. A. Thompson, Middle Eastern Studies, spent most of five months sabbatical leave in England, with a short visit to Israel, from 1 September, 1976 to 5 February, 1977. While in England he attended senior seminar studies in Old Testament Studies in Cambridge University. In Israel, he met colleagues in the University of Jerusalem and the Institute of Archaeology attached to the University of Tel Aviv, besides visiting a number of archaeological sites and museums.

Mr A. K. Turner, Civil Engineering, took study leave from March, 1976 to mid- January, 1977, during which he furthered his research and teaching experience

in agricultural engineering at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and the National College of Agricultural Engineering in England, besides visiting the University of Bristol, institutions in Germany, Canada and the United States.

Mr B. T. Tyson, Town and Regional Planning, during leave from August, 1976 to August, 1977, conducted experimental workshops in Melbourne and Hobart; lived, worked and studied group process the confluent education at Esalen Institute, California; and spent time in Canberra, Adelaide, New Zealand, Nepal, the United States and England.

Dr H. C. Watson, Mechanical Engineering, carried out research activities at the Imperial College, London, while on leave from June, 1976 to January, 1977. He delivered papers in Britain and the United States, gave seminars in both countries and carried out a survey on the current technology of automotive lead traps for the Australian Department of Transport.

Dr A. W. Wlllee, Physical Education, visited Universities in the U.S.A. and gave lectures and graduate seminars at the State University of Oregon during leave from 27 May to 5 September, 1977 before attending the 20th Anniversary Congress of ICPHER, Mexico City. Dr Willee also spent time in the United Kingdom and Europe.
