Morris was co-opted into the vacancy created by the death of the Very Rev. Penington was elected as the professors' representative for the remainder of Sir Lance's term.

Penington The high competition for places in the first year of the course continued. Cooke Students enrolled in the first year began studying in the new Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Music Education courses.

The number of postgraduate students progressing to Master's degrees through coursework and to degrees through research has been maintained at approximately 20 percent of the total student load in the Faculty. The development of fieldwork placement arrangements and the strengthening of resources in fieldwork have led to the enhanced contribution of this important area of the course to the academic programme.

THE LIBRARY

His tireless academic leadership during the important initial years of the new degree course is gratefully acknowledged. The move towards co-operative activities in Victorian college and university libraries continued during the year.

RESEARCH

Steps were taken to implement Co-operative Action by the Victorian Academic Libraries agency and to recruit appropriate staff to develop co-operative programs and in particular to develop a joint cataloging network. The library was also a founding member of a new consortium of certain university, college and state libraries which, together with the National Library, established the AUSINET network to enable online searching of various computer-based information services of relevance to this university.

STUDENT AFFAIRS

In 1977, the program of rotating exhibitions was continued by the Ewing and George Paton Galleries. This exhibition was organized by the Australian Gallery Directors' Council and the Australian tour started at the Ewing and George Paton Galleries.

UNIVERSITY SPORT

In early 1977, a feasibility study into possible renovations to the basement and sets of the Union Theater was commissioned by the University Theater Board, the Keith Macartney Fund and the Union Board. The first recommendations were made at the end of the year and are being considered by a specially appointed sub-committee. Following the end of Michael Richardson's term on the board, David Buller was elected to replace him as chairman.

THE GRADUATE UNION

Tickner, who was secretary of the Sports Union and Recreation Grounds Committee since 1951, retired at the end of the year after 45 years at the university. Sir. Derek Boosey, a former British Olympian, was appointed as the university's director of sport and physical recreation.

MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY PRESS

The Press Governing Board was grateful for the opportunity to present to the Council a full overview of all the current circumstances and activities of the press. A Bookroom Users Committee was established by the Press Board to advise it on customer services. Bookroom sales increased as the ratio of expenses to sales decreased again for the fourth year in a row.

MELBOURNE THEATRE COMPANY

On this basis, taking stock replacement and other predictable costs into account, library trading is a well-balanced, break-even operation. As part of prudence, Knjigarna will continue to keep the prices of books (especially textbooks) as low as possible.

Pre-production planning for Ray Lawler's Doll Trilogy was completed during the year and video shooting began in late December. With the help of the Victorian Government, new premises for the company's headquarters and workshops were established in South Melbourne. The total attendance for the main season, tours and youth tours that year was more than 425,000.

THE UNIVERSITY ASSEMBLY

The Society's regular artistic and workshop training program and the Play Reading Service continued during the year at the new headquarters.
