Overview
The Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Studies course is designed principally for professional educators who have a four-year undergraduate Bachelor of Education degree or equivalent, and preferably at least one year of professional experience.
This course is normally completed in one year full-time or equivalent part-time and requires the successful completion of 100 points. Candidates must specialise in a particular area by choosing a stream from the selection below.
Course Objectives
Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Studies
On completion of this course students should be able to:
• deepen their knowledge and extend their understanding in the general area of educational thought and practice;
• acquire a substantial understanding of relevant theory and practice in particular areas of education pertinent to the specialisation program in their course;
• improve their ability to present carefully reasoned and appropriately documented positions on matters of educational significance related to their chosen subjects;
• be acquainted with the range of expert writing and research on particular topics in the field of education;
• apply, to the resolution of practical situations in areas of education related to their studies, principles for action based on pertinent writings and research;
• be eligible, under particular specified conditions, for employment in designated positions within the Directorate of School Education, and in other schools authorities;
• have an ongoing interested in the study and practice of education; and
• establish a sound basis for further studies in Education at the Masters level.

Entry Requirements
A person may be eligible for admission to the Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Studies if the individual has:
• completed at a standard satisfactory to the Faculty a degree and an approved teaching qualification from a university or tertiary institution approved by the Faculty; or
• completed at a standard satisfactory to the Faculty a four year teaching degree from a university or tertiary institution approved by the Faculty; or
• completed an equivalent qualification which is recognised by the Faculty as evidence of adequate preparation for the course; or
• achieved a record of professional experience in a field acceptable to the Faculty.
Additional Entrance Requirements for individual specialisations LOTE (Languages Other Than English):
• completed at a standard satisfactory to the Faculty a three year post-VCE major in a language other than English; or
• a hig degree of proficiency in a language other than English at a standard satisfactory to the Faculty.
TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages):
■ a high degree of proficiency in English at a standard satisfactory to the Faculty.
Reading Recovery:
■ completed at a standard satisfactory to the Faculty an approved qualification in early childhood or primary education that includes studies in literacy, curriculum studies and child development; and
• have recent teaching experience in the early years of schooling acceptable to the Faculty; and
• achieved a record of at least five years full-time or regular teaching experience in a primary school.
Disabilities and Impairments:
• achieved a record of employment in or relevant to special education or integration acceptance to the Faculty.
Learning Disabilities:
• achieved a record of employment in or relevant to special education or integration acceptable to the Faculty.
Student Welfare:
■ achieved a record of at least three years teaching experience acceptable to the Faculty.

Period
of
CandidatureFull-time candidates shall be required to pursue studies for at least one academic year and not more than two
academic years, and part-time candidates shall be required to pursue studies for at least two academic years and not more than four academic years.
Unsatisfactory Progress
Following the confirmation of results at the end of the academic year the enrolments of ce rtain students come under review as follows:
1. Students who satisfactorily complete less than one half of their total enrolment in that year;
2. Students who fail a subject for the second time;
3. Students who do not complete their course within two years as a full-time student or within four years as a part-time student.
Please refer to the General Information section at the front of this Handbook, under Unsatisfactory Progress, for an outline of the Faculty process in dealing with students who fall into these categories.
Qualifying for the Award
A candidate must attend lectures and classes, and/or workshops and/or practicum placements, as prescribed by the Academic Board on the recommendation of the Faculty and published with the details of subjects.
No candidate may pursue a course of study or receive credit for subjects completed unless the candidate's proposed selection of subjects has been approved by the Faculty. Any subsequent alteration in the course of study must be approved by the Faculty.
A candidate who has complied with the prescribed
conditions and, having completed to the satisfaction of the examiners, the prescribed assessments for the approved subjects, has obtained a cumulative score of not fewer than 100 points, may be admitted to the relevant award.

The Department of Learning and Educational Development offers postgraduate studies in early childhood education.

This course aims to attract early childhood and primary trained teachers and professionalss working in the early intervention field whether that be at the face-to-face teaching, managerial or policy level.
