EDUCATION
• Quarter three - Festivals and Events: Australia Day: Reverse Garbage stall; Lunar Festival:
Resource Recovery had a stall at the event, encouraging attendees to ask questions about waste and Resource Recovery. Facilitated a cooking demonstration re leftover food to create new meals.
Reverse Garbage also had a stall and children were able to make paper lanterns.
• Workshop: “The Super Hero Puppet workshop which was very popular with the children who attended.
Three workshops including No- Dig Gardening, Love Food Hate Waste Part 1 and Jam Making. Schools:
Keep NSW Beautiful EnviroMentors visited local primary schools. Cleanaway: 2 pre-school sessions educating approximately 50 students. 6 education sessions to preschools delivered.
• LFHW Workshop (stage 2); CALD workshop on LFHW – how to use your leftovers to create yummy food for Indonesian Welfare Association at Rouse Hill
• Quarter two - 58 educations sessions were held for preschool and primary school students.
• Four workshops held for CALD communities including Indonesian and Cantonese translations re:
green cleaning and gift ideas for Christmas.
• Worshop series included: composting and worm farming, soap making, sustainable food tour and jam making. ‘Talking Points’ group focused on what happens to the waste once it leaves the kerbside.
Other workshops included de-cluttering, living with less chemicals and green cleaning, recycled kitchen garden and bread and pasta making. Workshops were well received by residents.
WASTE 2 ART COMPETITION
Quarter three - Prize session including the gardening kit and visit was provided to Dural Public School on 27 February 2017. Discussed gardening, composting and worm farming, upcycling and reuse with the students MULCHING
Quarter two - Residents brought their bulky garden organic material and took home mulch at six mulching day events.
NATIONAL RECYCLING WEEK
Quarter one - Local primary schools participated in the Waste 2 Art competition which celebrated National Recycling Week held in November 2016. Winning artworks and a selection of other artworks were displayed at the Resource Recovery stall at the Hawkesbury Harvest Farmer’s Markets.
COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENT CENTRE The Community Environment Centre (CEC) is a
community resource dedicated to promoting the concept of sustainability. The CEC features a Waterwise Garden and Sustainable Home Demonstration Site featuring installations, displays and interpretative signage designed to encourage sustainable practices. The Centre celebrated its 10th birthday on 30 July with a native wildlife display, environmental stalls, workshops, photo exhibition, a sausage sizzle and more.
COUNCIL APPLIES FOR GREEN ARMY GRANT In 2015, the Green Army, a federal government program which gives work to people aged 17-24, began their quest to regenerate native plants along Cattai Creek.
The Green Army works really well with Council’s Bushland Team. They work mainly at Bernie Mullane Reserve and Fullers Road Reserve along the Cattai Creek Catchment.
We have applied for a grant with the idea that the program is extended along the Toongabbie Creek Catchment Area.
ANNUAL GARAGE SALE TRAIL
This nation-wide initiative, promotes community connectedness and provides a novel way for residents to declutter, reduce waste, make money and fundraise for a charity or organisation of their choice. The sale was held 22 October 2016.
