R E G U L A T I O N 3 . 3 5 — D E G R E E S O F B A C H E L O R O F M E D I C I N E A N D B A C H E L O R O F S U R G E R Y
1 . A c a n d i d a t e for the degrees of Bachelor of M e d i c i n e a n d Bachelor of Surgery s h a l l , after m a t r i c u l a t i n g , pursue his studies for not less than six years, a t t e n d such lectures and classes and p e r f o r m such p r a c t i c a l w o r k and pass such e x a m i n a t i o n s as may be p r e s c r i b e d .
2. No c a n d i d a t e shall be a d m i t t e d to the course for the degrees of bachelor of M e d i c i n e a n d bachelor of Surgery unless, subject to d i s p e n - sation by the A c a d e m i c Board in special cases, having sat for the Higher School Certificate e x a m i n a t i o n on not more than t w o o c c a s i o n s , he has:
(a) at one s i t t i n g o b t a i n e d grade D or higher in four s u b j e c t s ; a n d (b) obtained grade D or higher in English, C h e m i s t r y a n d one of Physics,
Biology or a branch of M a t h e m a t i c s .
3. The s u b j e c t s of the course for the degrees and the c o n d i t i o n s on w h i c h such s u b j e c t s may be taken shall be as prescribed f r o m t i m e to t i m e by the A c a d e m i c Board on the r e c o m m e n d a t i o n of the faculty of M e d i c i n e a n d p u b l i s h e d w i t h the details of s u b j e c t s .
4 . ( 1 ) To pass a Year of the c o u r s e , a c a n d i d a t e shall c o m p l y w i t h one of the f o l l o w i n g c o n d i t i o n s :
(a) he s h a l l pass at the e x a m i n a t i o n s in or o b t a i n c r e d i t for each s u b j e c t of that Year; or
(b) he shall be passed by the f a c u l t y in the Year of the course as a w h o l e . In a w a r d i n g such pass, the f a c u l t y shall take into a c c o u n t his p e r f o r m a n c e in all subjects in a c c o r d a n c e w i t h p r i n c i p l e s d e t e r m i n e d by the f a c u l t y f r o m t i m e to t i m e and a p p r o v e d by the A c a d e m i c B o a r d . A c a n d i d a t e passed by the f a c u l t y in the Year as a w h o l e w h o has not passed at the e x a m i n a t i o n i n , or obtained c r e d i t for, any p a r t i c u l a r subject shall not be r e c o r d e d as having passed in that s u b j e c t . ( 2 ) (a) Except w h e r e o t h e r w i s e prescribed by the A c a d e m i c Board on
the r e c o m m e n d a t i o n of the f a c u l t y and p u b l i s h e d w i t h the d e t a i l s of subjects or w h e r e special p e r m i s s i o n is given by the f a c u l t y , a student shall pass one Year of the course in a c c o r d a n c e w i t h the p r e c e d i n g sub-sections before being a l l o w e d to p r o c e e d to the s u c c e e d i n g Year of the c o u r s e , (b) P r o v i d e d that w h e r e in the details of subjects it is p r e s c r i b e d
that any subject shall rank as a single subject w h i c h may be passed separately a c a n d i d a t e w h o fails in the e x a m i n a t i o n in that subject only may be p e r m i t t e d by the f a c u l t y in its abso- lute d i s c r e t i o n to proceed w i t h the w o r k of the next s u c c e e d i n g year in such manner and subject to such c o n d i t i o n s as may be p r e s c r i b e d .
( 3 ) A c a n d i d a t e w h o has not passed a Year of the course in accor- dance w i t h s u b - s e c t i o n ( 1 ) hereof must repeat the w h o l e of that Year of the course unless special p e r m i s s i o n to do o t h e r w i s e is g r a n t e d by the f a c u l t y .
5. ( i ) The e x a m i n a t i o n s in M e d i c i n e shall be c o n d u c t e d by a board of e x a m i n e r s of w h i c h a Professor of M e d i c i n e shall be a m e m b e r a n d act as c h a i r m a n .
Regulations ( i i ) The e x a m i n a t i o n s in Surgery shall be c o n d u c t e d by a board of
e x a m i n e r s of w h i c h a Professor of Surgery shall be a m e m b e r a n d act as c h a i r m a n .
( i i i ) The e x a m i n a t i o n s in O b s t e t r i c s and G y n a e c o l o g y shall be con- d u c t e d by a board of e x a m i n e r s of w h i c h a Professor of Obstet- rics a n d Gynaecology shall be a m e m b e r a n d act as c h a i r m a n . 6. Repealed.
7. Unless o t h e r w i s e p r o v i d e d , a c a n d i d a t e w h o f a i l s to pass any sub- ject or subjects may at the d i s c r e t i o n of the f a c u l t y of M e d i c i n e o n the u n a n i m o u s r e c o m m e n d a t i o n of the board of e x a m i n e r s be r e q u i r e d to give f u r t h e r e v i d e n c e before r e - e x a m i n a t i o n of h a v i n g a t t e n d e d such f u r t h e r i n s t r u c t i o n or having p e r f o r m e d such f u r t h e r p r a c t i c a l w o r k as the f a c u l t y may d i r e c t .
8 . H o s p i t a l w o r k shall be as prescribed by d e t a i l s of s u b j e c t s or a n n o u n c e m e n t s p u b l i s h e d by the f a c u l t y a n d subject to any such pro- v i s i o n s by a n n o u n c e m e n t s made at the r e c o g n i z e d h o s p i t a l s and shall not be subject to statutes and regulations g o v e r n i n g U n i v e r s i t y t e r m s and v a c a t i o n s .
9. The f a c u l t y may require attendance at any lectures or d e m o n s t r a - tions or the p e r f o r m a n c e of any p r a c t i c a l w o r k p r e s c r i b e d in the d e t a i l s of subjects d u r i n g such part of any vacation as it may d e e m fit.
1 0 . C a n d i d a t e s w h o have passed all the p r e s c r i b e d e x a m i n a t i o n s and f u l f i l l e d all the p r e s c r i b e d c o n d i t i o n s may be a d m i t t e d to the degrees of bachelor of M e d i c i n e and bachelor of Surgery.
1 1 . W h e r e pursuant to regulations subsequently repealed or a m e n d e d a c a n d i d a t e has o b t a i n e d c r e d i t or may retain credit in the c o u r s e for the degrees of bachelor of M e d i c i n e a n d bachelor of Surgery, the f a c u l t y may d e t e r m i n e in w h a t further subjects he must pass in order to o b t a i n the d e g r e e ; a n d , n o t w i t h s t a n d i n g a n y t h i n g to the c o n t r a r y , the f a c u l t y may e x e m p t h i m f r o m such subjects of the course as are in its o p i n i o n the s u b s t a n t i a l e q u i v a l e n t of subjects already passed pursuant to the repealed or a m e n d e d r e g u l a t i o n s .
R E G U L A T I O N 3 . 7 1 — D E G R E E O F B A C H E L O R O F M E D I C A L S C I E N C E
1 . ( 1 ) A c a n d i d a t e for the degree of bachelor of M e d i c a l Science shall pursue for not less than one year a course of a d v a n c e d studies i n —
(a) one of the f o l l o w i n g ; (i) A n a t o m y ; ( i i ) B i o c h e m i s t r y ; ( i i i ) P h y s i o l o g y ; or
(b) such other subject as the faculty of M e d i c i n e may f r o m t i m e to t i m e approve for the purposes of this r e g u l a t i o n .
( 2 ) A c a n d i d a t e p u r s u i n g a d v a n c e d s t u d i e s in a subject listed in paragraph (a) of sub-section ( 1 ) , may c o m m e n c e the course at any t i m e after c o m p l e t i n g the Second Year of the course for the degrees of bachelor of M e d i c i n e a n d bachelor of Surgery but may not be a d m i t t e d to the degree of bachelor of M e d i c a l Science before c o m p l e t i n g the T h i r d Year of the latter c o u r s e .

( 3 ) A c a n d i d a t e p u r s u i n g a d v a n c e d studies in any subject approved by the f a c u l t y pursuant to paragraph ( b ) of s u b - s e c t i o n ( 1 ) , may c o m - mence the c o u r s e at any time after c o m p l e t i n g the T h i r d Year of the course f o r the degrees of bachelor of M e d i c i n e a n d bachelor of Surgery.
2. Before c o m m e n c i n g his course, a c a n d i d a t e shall o b t a i n the approval of the f a c u l t y a n d of the c h a i r m a n of the d e p a r t m e n t in w h i c h he proposes to c a r r y out his c o u r s e , and the c h a i r m a n of that d e p a r t m e n t shall w i t h the a p p r o v a l of the f a c u l t y prescribe for h i m the a d v a n c e d studies to be p u r s u e d by h i m .
3. No c a n d i d a t e shall be a d m i t t e d to the course unless (a) in the o p i n i o n of the f a c u l t y he has s h o w n special a p t i t u d e for his studies in the course f o r the degrees of bachelor of M e d i c i n e a n d bachelor of Surgery and ( b ) he has been r e c o m m e n d e d by the c h a i r m a n of the d e p a r t m e n t in w h i c h his a d v a n c e d studies are to be c a r r i e d out as a person fit to c a r r y out such s t u d i e s .
4 . The c h a i r m a n of the d e p a r t m e n t in w h i c h the c a n d i d a t e proposes to carry out his c o u r s e of a d v a n c e d studies m a y , w i t h the approval of the f a c u l t y , require the c a n d i d a t e to a t t e n d l e c t u r e s , carry out p r a c t i c a l w o r k , a n d pass an e x a m i n a t i o n in a subject or s u b j e c t s , or any part or parts of a subject or s u b j e c t s , related to his c o u r s e . "
5. A c a n d i d a t e shall s u b m i t f o r e x a m i n a t i o n a d e t a i l e d report on the a d v a n c e d s t u d i e s c a r r i e d out by h i m and may be r e q u i r e d to pass a w r i t t e n e x a m i n a t i o n or a viva voce e x a m i n a t i o n , or b o t h , c o n c e r n i n g the subject of such report.
6. A c a n d i d a t e w h o has s u b m i t t e d a s a t i s f a c t o r y report on his advanced studies and f u l f i l l e d all other c o n d i t i o n s p r e s c r i b e d for h i m may be a d m i t t e d to the degree of bachelor of M e d i c a l S c i e n c e .
R E G U L A T I O N 3 . 3 6 — D E G R E E O F D O C T O R O F M E D I C I N E
1 . The f a c u l t y of M e d i c i n e may a d m i t as a c a n d i d a t e for the degree of d o c t o r of M e d i c i n e —
(a) any person w h o is a bachelor of M e d i c i n e a n d a bachelor of Surgery; or
( b ) w h o h o l d s a degree or degrees r e c o g n i z e d by the f a c u l t y for the purposes of this regulation and for the purposes of Regulation 3.3.1 a n d in either case is a graduate of at least t w o y e a r s ' s t a n d i n g . 2 . ( 1 ) A c a n d i d a t e may proceed to the degree by s u b m i t t i n g a thesis or p u b l i s h e d w o r k s a t i s f a c t o r y to the e x a m i n e r s on a subject approved by the f a c u l t y as relevant to the theory or p r a c t i c e of M e d i c i n e . Such thesis or p u b l i s h e d w o r k m u s t in the o p i n i o n of the f a c u l t y be a substantial c o n t r i b u t i o n to k n o w l e d g e a n d the o u t c o m e of o r i g i n a l research by the c a n d i d a t e .
( 2 ) W h e r e r e q u i r e d by the e x a m i n e r s , a c a n d i d a t e shall present for an oral or other e x a m i n a t i o n on the subject of the t h e s i s .
3. A t least one of the e x a m i n e r s of the thesis or p u b l i s h e d w o r k shall be an external e x a m i n e r .
4 . A c a n d i d a t e w h o has f u l f i l l e d the r e q u i r e m e n t s of the r e g u l a t i o n and has been passed by the examiners may be a d m i t t e d to the degree of d o c t o r of M e d i c i n e .
• W h e r e the p r e s c r i b e d ancillary w o r k is to be c a r r i e d out in a department outside the faculty of M e d i c i n e the candidate w i l l be subject to any legislation governing that course.

1 . ( 1 ) There shall be a degree of master of Surgery ( " t h e d e g r e e " ) . (2) A person w h o —
(a) (i) is a bachelor of M e d i c i n e a n d a bachelor of S u r g e r y ; or
(ii) h o l d s a degree or degrees r e c o g n i z e d by the f a c u l t y of M e d i c i n e ( " t h e f a c u l t y " ) pursuant to R e g u l a t i o n 3 . 3 . 1 ( 1 ) ( b ) ;
in each case of not less than t w o y e a r s ' s t a n d i n g ; a n d (b) has not less than t w o years' experience as a m e d i c a l officer
in a h o s p i t a l affiliated for the purposes of t e a c h i n g w i t h a u n i v e r s i t y recognized by the A c a d e m i c Board on the r e c o m m e n d a t i o n of the f a c u l t y for the purposes of this r e g u l a t i o n ;
m a y , subject to the consent of the f a c u l t y , be a d m i t t e d to c a n d i d a t u r e for the degree.
2 . A c a n d i d a t e shall engage in a course of study a n d research in a d i s c i p l i n e related to surgery being one of such d i s c i p l i n e s as are a p p r o v e d f r o m t i m e to t i m e by the A c a d e m i c Board on the r e c o m - m e n d a t i o n of the f a c u l t y .
3. ( 1 ) A c a n d i d a t e shall obtain the approval of the f a c u l t y for the course of study a n d research proposed by the c a n d i d a t e b e f o r e c o m m e n c i n g the course and for any change in the c a n d i d a t e ' s course p r o p o s e d after c o m m e n c i n g it.
(2) The f a c u l t y may, for the purposes of section 6 ( 1 ) ( b ) , approve r e t r o s p e c t i v e l y a p e r i o d of research u n d e r t a k e n in a d i s c i p l i n e a p p r o v e d pursuant to section 2.
4 . The e x a m i n a t i o n f o r the degree shall be in t w o parts, Part I a n d Part II.
5. ( 1 ) The s u b j e c t s of Part I and the syllabus of each s u b j e c t shall be as p r e s c r i b e d f r o m t i m e to t i m e by the A c a d e m i c Board on the r e c o m m e n d a t i o n of the f a c u l t y and p u b l i s h e d a n n u a l l y w i t h the d e t a i l s of s u b j e c t s .
(2) A c a n d i d a t e w h o presents evidence s a t i s f a c t o r y to the f a c u l t y that he or s h e —
(a) has passed an e x a m i n a t i o n or e x a m i n a t i o n s w h i c h are c o m p a r a b l e to Part I of the e x a m i n a t i o n a n d have been a p p r o v e d ' for the purpose by the f a c u l t y ; or
(b) has had other professional e d u c a t i o n a n d e x p e r i e n c e rele- vant to the a p p r o v e d d i s c i p l i n e w h i c h is s a t i s f a c t o r y to the f a c u l t y ;
may be e x e m p t e d f r o m Part I of the e x a m i n a t i o n a n d g i v e n c r e d i t t h e r e f o r .
6. ( 1 ) Before presenting for Part II of the e x a m i n a t i o n a c a n d i d a t e s h a l l —
(a) have passed in or obtained c r e d i t for Part I of the e x a m i - n a t i o n ; and
(b) have c o m p l e t e d a p e r i o d of research, of not less than t w e l v e m o n t h s if undertaken f u l l - t i m e or a p e r i o d w h i c h is d e e m e d by the f a c u l t y to be its e q u i v a l e n t if u n d e r t a k e n p a r t - t i m e , in a d i s c i p l i n e a p p r o v e d pursuant to s e c t i o n 2.
(2) Part II of the e x a m i n a t i o n shall consist of the p r e s e n t a t i o n of 3 3 B

a thesis dealing w i t h some aspect of the d i s c i p l i n e a p p r o v e d for research pursuant to s u b - s e c t i o n ( 1 ) .
7. No c a n d i d a t e shall be a d m i t t e d to the degree w h o — (a) is a g r a d u a t e of less than five y e a r s ' s t a n d i n g ; or
(b) has not d e v o t e d at least three years since g r a d u a t i n g to the p r a c t i c e and study of surgery a n d the d i s c i p l i n e s relevant t h e r e t o .
8. A c a n d i d a t e w h o has satisfied the e x a m i n e r s in Part II of the e x a m i n a t i o n a n d has o t h e r w i s e c o m p l i e d w i t h the p r o v i s i o n s of this r e g u l a t i o n m a y be a d m i t t e d to the degree of master of Surgery.
R E G U L A T I O N 3 . 9 4 — D E G R E E O F M A S T E R O F M E D I C I N E 1 . ( 1 ) There shall be a degree of master of M e d i c i n e .
( 2 ) A p e r s o n w h o —
(a) ( i ) is a bachelor of M e d i c i n e a n d a bachelor of Surgery, or
( i i ) h o l d s a degree or degrees r e c o g n i z e d by the f a c u l t y of M e d i c i n e ( " t h e f a c u l t y " ) pursuant to Regulation 3 . 3 . 1 ( 1 ) < b ) .
in each case of at least t w o y e a r s ' s t a n d i n g ;
(b) has had not less than t w o y e a r s ' experience as a m e d i c a l officer in a hospital affiliated f o r the purposes of teaching w i t h a university r e c o g n i z e d by the A c a d e m i c Board on the r e c o m m e n d a t i o n of the f a c u l t y for the purposes of this r e g u l a t i o n ; and
(c) has obtained the consent of the f a c u l t y to c a n d i d a t u r e — may be a d m i t t e d to c a n d i d a t u r e f o r the degree of master of M e d i c i n e .
( 3 ) The degree may be o b t a i n e d either by course w o r k or by thesis.
2. ( 1 ) A c a n d i d a t e for the degree by course w o r k shall pursue a course of study a n d t r a i n i n g in a d i s c i p l i n e being one of such d i s c i p l i n e s as may be p r e s c r i b e d f r o m t i m e to t i m e by the A c a d e m i c Board on the r e c o m m e n d a t i o n of the f a c u l t y and p u b l i s h e d w i t h the d e t a i l s of s u b j e c t s .
(2) Before c o m m e n c i n g the course for the degree, the c a n d i d a t e shall o b t a i n the approval of the f a c u l t y f o r a course of study and t r a i n i n g in a p r e s c r i b e d d i s c i p l i n e a p p r o v e d by the f a c u l t y ( " t h e a p p r o v e d d i s c i p l i n e " ) a n d shall o b t a i n the approval of the f a c u l t y for any subsequent change in such course.
3. ( 1 ) The e x a m i n a t i o n for the degree by course w o r k shall be in t w o parts. Part I and Part II.
( 2 ) The s u b j e c t s of each Part a n d the s y l l a b u s of each subject of e x a m i n a t i o n shall be as p r e s c r i b e d f r o m t i m e lo t i m e by the A c a d e m i c Board on the r e c o m m e n d a t i o n of the faculty and p u b l i s h e d annually w i t h the d e t a i l s of s u b j e c t s .
( 3 ) A c a n d i d a t e w h o presents e v i d e n c e s a t i s f a c t o r y to the f a c u l t y of h a v i n g —
(a) passed an e x a m i n a t i o n or e x a m i n a t i o n s w h i c h are c o m - parable to Part I of the e x a m i n a t i o n and have been a p p r o v e d for the purpose by the f a c u l t y ; or

to the a p p r o v e d d i s c i p l i n e w h i c h is s a t i s f a c t o r y to the f a c u l t y ;
may be e x e m p t e d f r o m Part I of the e x a m i n a t i o n a n d g i v e n c r e d i t t h e r e f o r .
Part II of the e x a m i n a t i o n shall consist of w r i t t e n , c l i n i c a l and oral e x a m i n a t i o n s , as p r e s c r i b e d , in the a p p r o v e d d i s c i p l i n e .
Before p r e s e n t i n g for Part II of the e x a m i n a t i o n a c a n d i d a t e shall have passed in or o b t a i n e d c r e d i t for Part I of the e x a m i n a t i o n .
Before c o m p l e t i n g Part II of the e x a m i n a t i o n a c a n d i d a t e shall have c o m p l e t e d a course of study a n d t r a i n i n g in the a p p r o v e d d i s c i p l i n e of not less than t w e l v e m o n t h s if u n d e r t a k e n f u l l - t i m e or a p e r i o d w h i c h is d e e m e d by the f a c u l t y to be its e q u i v a l e n t if u n d e r t a k e n p a r t - t i m e .
4 . A c a n d i d a t e for the degree by thesis s h a l l —
(a) pass i n , or as p r o v i d e d in section 3, o b t a i n c r e d i t for Part I of the e x a m i n a t i o n r e f e r r e d to in section 3;
(b) c o m p l e t e a p e r i o d of research in a d i s c i p l i n e a p p r o v e d ( w h e t h e r p r o s p e c t i v e l y or r e t r o s p e c t i v e l y ) by the f a c u l t y being one of the d i s c i p l i n e s p r e s c r i b e d pursuant to section 2 ( 1 ) ( " t h e a p p r o v e d d i s c i p l i n e " ) w h i c h p e r i o d shall be not less than t w e l v e m o n t h s if undertaken f u l l - t i m e or a p e r i o d d e e m e d by the f a c u l t y to be its equivalent if u n d e r t a k e n p a r t - t i m e : a n d (c) s u b m i t for e x a m i n a t i o n p u b l i s h e d or u n p u b l i s h e d w o r k based
upon that research a n d dealing w i t h some aspect of the a p p r o v e d d i s c i p l i n e .
5. A c a n d i d a t e w h o —
(a) is a graduate of not less than five y e a r s ' s t a n d i n g ;
(b) has d e v o t e d at least three years since g r a d u a t i o n to p r a c t i c e and study relevant to the a p p r o v e d d i s c i p l i n e ;
(c) has satisfied the e x a m i n e r s pursuant to either s e c t i o n 3 or section 4 ; a n d
(d) has o t h e r w i s e c o m p l i e d w i t h the p r o v i s i o n s of this r e g u l a t i o n ; may be a d m i t t e d to the degree of master of M e d i c i n e .

(a) (i) is a bachelor of M e d i c i n e a n d a bachelor of S u r g e r y ; or
( i i ) h o l d s a degree or degrees recognized by the f a c u l t y of M e d i c i n e ( " t h e f a c u l t y " ) pursuant to R e g u l a t i o n 3 . 3 . 1 ( 1 ) ( b ) ;
in each case of not less than t w o y e a r s ' s t a n d i n g ; and (b) has had not less than t w o years' experience as a m e d i c a l
officer in a h o s p i t a l recognized by the f a c u l t y for the purposes of this r e g u l a t i o n ;
may, subject to the consent of the f a c u l t y , be a d m i t t e d to c a n d i d a t u r e for the degree.

2. A c a n d i d a t e shall engage in a course of study and research in a d i s c i p l i n e related to o b s t e t r i c s or g y n a e c o l o g y being one of such d i s c i p l i n e s as are a p p r o v e d f r o m t i m e to t i m e by the A c a d e m i c Board on the r e c o m m e n d a t i o n of the f a c u l t y .
3. ( 1 ) A c a n d i d a t e shall o b t a i n the a p p r o v a l of the f a c u l t y for the course of study and research p r o p o s e d by the c a n d i d a t e before c o m m e n c i n g the course and for any change in the c a n d i d a t e ' s course p r o p o s e d a f t e r c o m m e n c i n g it.
(2) The f a c u l t y m a y , for the p u r p o s e s of s e c t i o n 6 ( 1 ) ( b ) , approve r e t r o s p e c t i v e l y a p e r i o d of research u n d e r t a k e n in a d i s c i p l i n e a p p r o v e d pursuant to s e c t i o n 2 .
4 . The e x a m i n a t i o n for the degree shall be in t w o parts .Part I and Part I I .

1 . There shall be p o s t - g r a d u a t e m e d i c a l d i p l o m a s in various soecialties as f o l l o w s —
D i p l o m a in O p h t h a l m o l o g y D i p l o m a in T h e r a p e u t i c R a d i o l o g y D i p l o m a in A n a e s t h e t i c s
2 . Every c a n d i d a t e for such a d i p l o m a s h a l l —
(a) h o l d the degrees of bachelor of M e d i c i n e and bachelor of Surgery in the U n i v e r s i t y ; or
( b ) hold any other degree or degrees w h e t h e r in the U n i v e r s i t y or any other university or i n s t i t u t i o n w h i c h degree or degrees are, w h e t h e r separately or in c o m b i n a t i o n , r e c o g n i z e d by the f a c u l t y of M e d i c i n e pursuant to Regulation 3.3.1 as appropriate for the purposes of this r e g u l a t i o n ; or
( c ) being resident in V i c t o r i a or c o m i n g to the U n i v e r s i t y for a pre- scribed period of s t u d y , h o l d a q u a l i f i c a t i o n e n t i t l i n g the h o l d e r thereof to r e g i s t r a t i o n as a legally qualified m e d i c a l p r a c t i t i o n e r in V i c t o r i a .
3. ( 1 ) The e x a m i n a t i o n for each d i p l o m a shall be in t w o parts.
( 2 ) The subjects of each part and the syllabus of each subject shall be as p r e s c r i b e d and p u b l i s h e d annually in the details of subjects.
4 . Examinations in each part s h a l l , if c a n d i d a t e s present t h e m s e l v e s , be held t w i c e in each year at t i m e s to be p r e s c r i b e d by the A c a d e m i c Board on the r e c o m m e n d a t i o n of the f a c u l t y and p u b l i s h e d in the d e t a i l s of s u b j e c t s .
5. Before presenting for part I a c a n d i d a t e shall present evidence that he has been in practice for the p e r i o d and of the nature prescribed by the A c a d e m i c Board pursuant to s e c t i o n 6 sub-section ( 2 ) hereof.
6. ( 1 ) Before presenting for part II a c a n d i d a t e shall pass in part I and shall satisfy tho f a c u l t y of M e d i c i n e t h a t —
(a) he has been in p r a c t i c e for the p e r i o d p r e s c r i b e d f r o m t i m e to t i m e by the A c a d e m i c Board on the a d v i c e of the f a c u l t y ; a n d
(b) subsequent to g r a d u a t i o n he has h a d —
(i) t r a i n i n g in general m e d i c i n e and surgery in a general h o s p i t a l , and
( i i ) special t r a i n i n g in a h o s p i t a l or hospitals ( i n c l u d i n g the a p p r o p r i a t e special c l i n i c s of a general h o s p i t a l ) con- cerned w i t h the a p p r o p r i a t e specialty as p r e s c r i b e d by the f a c u l t y .
( 2 ) The m i n i m u m p e r i o d a n d nature of practice and the general nature and d u r a t i o n of the t r a i n i n g required for each d i p l o m a shall be prescribed f r o m t i m e to time by the A c a d e m e Coard on the r e c o m m e n d a t i o n of the f a c u l t y and p u b l i s h e d in the details of s u b j e c t s .

8. The f a c u l t y may on a p p l i c a t i o n grant a c a n d i d a t e total or partial e x e m p t i o n f r o m e x a m i n a t i o n in any subject the content of w h i c h is 3 7

9. Candidates w h o have passed in both parts of the e x a m i n a t i o n a n d w h o have o t h e r w i s e f u l f i l l e d the p r e s c r i b e d c o n d i t i o n s may be g r a n t e d the appropriate d i p l o m a .
10. Subject to section 2 but n o t w i t h s t a n d i n g any other p r o v i s i o n in this r e g u l a t i o n a d i p l o m a may be a w a r d e d to a c a n d i d a t e w h o has not less than ten years' s t a n d i n g as a m e d i c a l graduate and w h o has been a s s o c i a t e d , in a manner a p p r o v e d by the f a c u l t y , w i t h the practice of the appropriate specialty for not less than five years as a member of the staff of an approved h o s p i t a l :
P r o v i d e d t h a t —
(a) an a p p l i c a t i o n for a d m i s s i o n to c a n d i d a t u r e under this section shall be made to the Registrar in w r i t i n g a c c o m p a n i e d by a statement defining p r e c i s e l y the a p p l i c a n t ' s experience in the a p p r o p r i a t e s p e c i a l t y ;
(b) an a p p r o v e d c a n d i d a t e shall s u b m i t to the Registrar three p r i n t e d copies of a thesis or p u b l i s h e d w o r k d e a l i n g w i t h some aspect of the appropriate s p e c i a l t y ;
(c) the thesis or w o r k shall be e x a m i n e d as p r o v i d e d in r e g u l a t i o n 4.6 for the e x a m i n a t i o n of theses for higher degrees;

R E G U L A T I O N 3 . 4 0 A — D I P L O M A IN P S Y C H O L O G I C A L M E D I C I N E
1 . A c a n d i d a t e for the d i p l o m a in P s y c h o l o g i c a l M e d i c i n e shall be a bachelor of M e d i c i n e a n d bachelor of Surgery in the U n i v e r s i t y or the h o l d e r of degrees or d i p l o m a s c o n s i d e r e d by the f a c u l t y to be their e q u i v a l e n t . f o r the purpose of the d i p l o m a or, being resident in V i c t o r i a , or c o m i n g to the U n i v e r s i t y for a prescribed period of study, shall possess a q u a l i f i c a t i o n e n t i t l i n g h i m to registration as a legally qualified m e d i c a l p r a c t i t i o n e r in the State of V i c t o r i a .
2. Each c a n d i d a t e shall pursue a course of study as may be p r e s c r i b e d f r o m t i m e to t i m e by the A c a d e m i c Board on the r e c o m m e n d a t i o n of the f a c u l t y of M e d i c i n e a n d p u b l i s h e d in the details of s u b j e c t s . 3. 6. Before p r e s e n t i n g for Part II a c a n d i d a t e shall pass in Part I and shall s a t i s f y the f a c u l t y of M e d i c i n e t h a t —
(a) he has been in p r a c t i c e f o r a p e r i o d not less than the p e r i o d pre- scribed f r o m t i m e to t i m e by the A c a d e m i c Board on the r e c o m m e n d a t i o n of the f a c u l t y ; and
( b ) he has had special t r a i n i n g in a p p r o p r i a t e h o s p i t a l s or u n i t s . The general nature and d u r a t i o n of the special t r a i n i n g and the m i n i m u m period of practice r e q u i r e d shall be p r e s c r i b e d by the A c a d e m i c Board on the r e c o m m e n d a t i o n of the f a c u l t y and
p u b l i s h e d each year in the d e t a i l s of s u b j e c t s .

2. Each c a n d i d a t e shall pursue for not less than three years a course of study a n d t r a i n i n g as may be prescribed f r o m t i m e to t i m e by the A c a d e m i c Board on the r e c o m m e n d a t i o n of the f a c u l t y of M e d i c i n e and p u b l i s h e d in the d e t a i l s of subjects.
3 . The s u b j e c t s of e x a m i n a t i o n and the syllabus of each subject of e x a m i n a t i o n shall be as p r e s c r i b e d and p u b l i s h e d a n n u a l l y in the d e t a i l s of s u b j e c t s .
4 . The e x a m i n a t i o n for the d i p l o m a s h a l l , if c a n d i d a t e s present t h e m - selves, be held t w i c e in each year at t i m e s to be p r e s c r i b e d by the A c a d e m i c Board on the r e c o m m e n d a t i o n of the f a c u l t y a n d p u b l i s h e d in the details of s u b j e c t s .

(a) he has spent at least t w o years in a resident m e d i c a l a p p o i n t m e n t in a general h o s p i t a l , or its equivalent, d u r i n g w h i c h t i m e he
has had four m o n t h s ' experience in each of general M e d i c i n e and Surgery, or the e q u i v a l e n t of such e x p e r i e n c e ;
(b) he h o l d s a f u l l - t i m e a p p o i n t m e n t in a d e p a r t m e n t of D i a g n o s t i c R a d i o l o g y in, a h o s p i t a l a p p r o v e d for the purpose by the f a c u l t y . 6. Before p r e s e n t i n g for the e x a m i n a t i o n a c a n d i d a t e shall satisfy the f a c u l t y of M e d i c i n e t h a t —
(a) he has c o m p l e t e d s a t i s f a c t o r i l y the course of study a n d t r a i n i n g as p r e s c r i b e d in the d e t a i l s of s u b j e c t s ;
( b ) he has passed e x a m i n a t i o n s in A n a t o m y and P h y s i c s , a p p r o v e d for the p u r p o s e by the f a c u l t y .
