W E L C O M E TO STUDENTS

It is a pleasure to w e l c o m e you as a m e m b e r of the f a c u l t y of M e d i c i n e . You are j o i n i n g a strong and v i g o r o u s a c a d e m i c group w i t h i n the Univer- sity and e m b a r k i n g on w h a t s h o u l d prove to be a very c h a l l e n g i n g career.

T h i s offers o p p o r t u n i t i e s to d e v e l o p k n o w l e d g e , s k i l l s and experience in a w i d e variety of fields w h i c h span a range f r o m the most i n t i m a t e and personal p r o b l e m s of p a t i e n t s t o m a t t e r s w h i c h are of a m o s t c o m p l e x t e c h n o l o g i c a l and s c i e n t i f i c n a t u r e .

The f a c u l t y of M e d i c i n e in this U n i v e r s i t y w a s f o u n d e d in 1 8 6 2 , o n l y seven years after the f o r m a l o p e n i n g of the U n i v e r s i t y . It w a s the first m e d i c a l s c h o o l to be e s t a b l i s h e d in A u s t r a l i a and has a long t r a d i t i o n in b o t h teaching and research. In the last 2 5 years it has e x p a n d e d r a p i d l y and a t t a i n e d a standing in m e d i c a l research, in teaching and in c l i n i c a l practice of w h i c h it has every right to be proud w h e n c o m p a r e d w i t h other m e d i c a l s c h o o l s in the w e s t e r n w o r l d . D u r i n g this p e r i o d , m o s t of the e x i s t i n g c l i n i c a l a c a d e m i c d e p a r t m e n t s have been established a n d the m e d i c a l c o m p l e x d e v e l o p e d in the south-west corner of the U n i v e r s i t y c a m p u s . In a d d i t i o n to these f a c i l i t i e s , there are n o w three general c l i n i c a l s c h o o l s a s s o c i a t e d w i t h the f a c u l t y in a d d i t i o n to a number of specialist c l i n i c a l s c h o o l s . A d e p a r t m e n t of C o m m u n i t y Health has also been e s t a b l i s h e d w h i c h p r o v i d e s access to a c o m m u n i t y setting for teaching and research relevant to health care.

The u n d e r g r a d u a t e course p r o v i d e s an o p p o r t u n i t y for students to gain a f i r m g r o u n d i n g in m e d i c a l s c i e n c e in the context of both p h y s i c a l and behavioural p r o b l e m s . A l t h o u g h the first three years are based p r i m a r i l y on the U n i v e r s i t y c a m p u s , s t u d e n t s are g i v e n o p p o r t u n i t i e s to see m e d i c i n e being p r a c t i s e d in h o s p i t a l s a n d in the c o m m u n i t y and to gain an idea of the relevance of their studies to later m e d i c a l p r a c t i c e t h r o u g h presentation of c l i n i c a l p r o b l e m s in the course of t e a c h i n g . S o m e students w i t h a p a r t i c u l a r interest in m e d i c a l science may interrupt their course for one year to undertake a research degree, Bachelor of M e d i c a l S c i e n c e , in any one of the d e p a r t m e n t s of the f a c u l t y . In the c l i n i c a l years, s t u d e n t s are based at one of the three general c l i n i c a l s c h o o l s but gain experience in a variety of other settings relevant to the very v a r i e d d e m a n d s of m e d i c a l p r a c t i c e .

I d r a w your a t t e n t i o n to the o b j e c t i v e s of the course as set out at the b e g i n n i n g of Chapter 2. These reflect the purpose of the e d u c a t i o n a l p r o g r a m m e w h i c h you w i l l be u n d e r t a k i n g and a l t h o u g h e x a m i n a t i o n s are held t h r o u g h o u t the course to give a clear i n d i c a t i o n to you a n d the f a c u l t y of the progress you are m a k i n g , the real goal m u s t be preparing yourself e f f e c t i v e l y for m e d i c a l p r a c t i c e a n d the e x a m i n a t i o n s are not more than a y a r d s t i c k to ensure that this is h a p p e n i n g . I hope very m u c h that you w i l l find t i m e to m a i n t a i n interests a n d contacts outside m e d i c i n e d u r i n g your undergraduate years and to p a r t i c i p a t e in general student affairs in the University and in the f a c u l t y . For students to equip t h e m s e l v e s w e l l for the practice of m e d i c i n e they need to master not only a s u b s t a n t i a l b o d y of k n o w l e d g e and s k i l l s , but also to mature to the point that they u n d e r s t a n d t h e m s e l v e s , d e v e l o p g o o d relationships w i t h other people and an u n d e r s t a n d i n g of their c o m - m i t m e n t s and r e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s to b o t h i n d i v i d u a l s and the c o m m u n i t y . For

those w h o have p r o b l e m s of either a personal nature or w i t h their s t u d y , there are m a n y w h o are w i l l i n g a n d able to h e l p ; the i m p o r t a n t t h i n g is to seek a d v i c e early.

B A C H E L O R O F M E D I C I N E A N D B A C H E L O R O F S U R G E R Y C a n d i d a t e s a d m i t t e d to this course at First Year level m u s t :

( 1 ) Pass the V i c t o r i a n Higher School Certificate e x a m i n a t i o n in f o u r Group 1 s u b j e c t s at the one e x a m i n a t i o n at not more than t w o a t t e m p t s ;

( 2 ) o b t a i n Grade D or higher at the V i c t o r i a n Higher School Certificate e x a m i n a t i o n in E n g l i s h ' , C h e m i s t r y a n d in either P h y s i c s , a branch of M a t h e m a t i c s or B i o l o g y ; and

( 3 ) gain s e l e c t i o n in the First Year q u o t a .

O B J E C T I V E S O F T H E M E D I C A L C O U R S E

In passing t h r o u g h the u n d e r g r a d u a t e c u r r i c u l u m s t u d e n t s s h o u l d a c q u i r e :

1 . a basis of essential factual k n o w l e d g e and u n d e r s t a n d i n g of p r i n - c i p l e s r e l a t i n g to the structure and f u n c t i o n of the h u m a n b o d y ; 2. an u n d e r s t a n d i n g of p r i n c i p l e s in the analysis of h u m a n behaviour

and s o c i a l f u n c t i o n i n g relevant to health a n d d i s e a s e ;

3. a c a p a c i t y to a p p l y scientific k n o w l e d g e and a t t i t u d e s in the analysis of p r o b l e m s at each stage of the e d u c a t i o n a l p r o c e s s ; 4 . a c a p a c i t y a n d m o t i v a t i o n for c o n t i n u i n g i n d e p e n d e n t l e a r n i n g ; 5. an u n d e r s t a n d i n g of disease processes and m e c h a n i s m s in struc-

tural and f u n c t i o n a l t e r m s together w i t h a grasp of their c l i n i c a l m a n i f e s t a t i o n s and t r e a t m e n t ;

6. essential s k i l l s in the a c q u i s i t i o n and i n t e r p r e t a t i o n of c l i n i c a l o b s e r v a t i o n s ;

v i d u a l s and the c o m m u n i t y . S T R U C T U R E O F T H E C O U R S E

A revised c u r r i c u l u m for the p r e - c l i n i c a l years (One to T h r e e ) was intro- d u c e d in 1 9 8 0 c o m m e n c i n g w i t h the First Year p r o g r a m m e . The revised Second Year w a s m o u n t e d in 1 9 8 1 a n d the revised T h i r d Year in 1 9 8 2 .

Degrees a n d D i p l o m a s A revised c l i n i c a l c u r r i c u l u m (years Four to Six) has also been i n t r o - d u c e d c o m m e n c i n g w i t h the Fourth Year in 1 9 8 1 . The revised F i f t h Year w a s i n t r o d u c e d in 1 9 8 2 ; the revised Sixth Year in 1 9 8 3 .

The course may be d i v i d e d into the f o l l o w i n g m a i n stages:

1. T h e B a s i c S c i e n c e s and Medical S c i e n c e s

These subjects are s t u d i e d in the first three years of the c o u r s e , p r o v i d i n g the s c i e n t i f i c basis for the s t u d e n t ' s subsequent c l i n i c a l t r a i n i n g . B i o l o g y , C h e m i s t r y and Physics are taught by the Faculty of Science and are presented in the first t w o t e r m s of First Year. T r a i n i n g in h u m a n A n a t o m y extends t h r o u g h the w h o l e of the First Year a n d the first t w o t e r m s of the Second Year of the course. Behavioural Science is also s t u d i e d in these t w o y e a r s — M e d i c a l P s y c h o l o g y , M e d i c a l S o c i o l o g y and G r o w t h , D e v e l o p m e n t and A g e i n g are s t u d i e d d u r i n g First Year, a n d A b n o r m a l Psychology is offered in Second Year. D u r i n g the latter part of First Year s t u d e n t s also u n d e r t a k e a short course in First A i d .

Physiology c o m m e n c e s in the t h i r d term of First Year, and c o n t i n u e s to the end of s e c o n d t e r m of the Second Year. B i o c h e m i s t r y extends t h r o u g h o u t S e c o n d Year, a n d also into T h i r d Year as a substantial part of a course in M e t a b o l i s m a n d E n d o c r i n o l o g y .

The p a r a - c l i n i c a l s u b j e c t s , Pathology, P h a r m a c o l o g y and M i c r o b i o l o g y I n c l u d i n g I m m u n o l o g y are s t u d i e d t h r o u g h o u t T h i r d Year. Social and Preventive M e d i c i n e w i l l be presented in the first term of this year.

A d v a n c e d S t u d y Units are offered in the second and t h i r d years of the c o u r s e , i n v o l v i n g c r i t i c a l review and study in d e p t h of an area of m e d i c i n e a l r e a d y i n t r o d u c e d . The units are m o u n t e d in b o t h c a m p u s and c l i n i c a l d e p a r t m e n t s and each student must c o m p l e t e at least t w o of these units by the end of t h i r d year. C o r r e l a t i o n s e m i n a r s are m o u n t e d w e e k l y t h r o u g h o u t the t h i r d year. These p r o v i d e for p r e s e n t a t i o n of m a t e r i a l w h i c h integrates teaching in the t h i r d year s u b j e c t s , and d e m o n - strates relevance of second year studies on the one h a n d a n d r e l a t i o n s h i p to c l i n i c a l p r o b l e m s on the other.

Results o b t a i n e d in all subjects s t u d i e d in the second and t h i r d years of the course ( e x c l u d i n g A d v a n c e d Study U n i t s ) c o n t r i b u t e a 2 0 per cent w e i g h t i n g t o w a r d the s t u d e n t ' s final assessment at the e n d of the six year c o u r s e .

2 . T h e Clinical S c i e n c e s

A t the end of the t h i r d year students are a l l o c a t e d to one of the three general teaching h o s p i t a l s associated w i t h the U n i v e r s i t y of M e l b o u r n e . These are: A u s t i n / R e p a t r i a t i o n Hospital at H e i d e l b e r g , Royal M e l b o u r n e H o s p i t a l in P a r k v i l l e , a n d St. V i n c e n t ' s H o s p i t a l , Fitzroy. As far as p o s s i b l e s t u d e n t s are a l l o c a t e d to the hospital of their c h o i c e but it may be necessary in certain years for some other a l l o c a t i o n to o c c u r . It is here that s t u d e n t s spend m u c h of the next three years of their c o u r s e , except for p e r i o d s of p l a c e m e n t or t r a i n i n g at specialist i n s t i t u t i o n s such as the Royal W o m e n ' s Hospital or M e r c y M a t e r n i t y H o s p i t a l , the Royal C h i l d r e n ' s H o s p i t a l , Fairfield H o s p i t a l , M t . S t u d e n t s are required to have s u c c e s s f u l l y c o m p l e t e d the V i c t o r i a n Higher S c h o o l Certificate E x a m i n a t i o n by o b t a i n i n g grade D or higher in four Group 1 s u b j e c t s at the one e x a m i n a t i o n at not more than t w o a t t e m p t s , and to have o b t a i n e d at the V i c t o r i a n Higher School Certificate E x a m i n a t i o n grade D or higher in E n g l i s h " , C h e m i s t r y and one of either Physics, a branch of M a t h e m a t i c s or B i o l o g y .

For the Higher S c h o o l Certificate e x a m i n a t i o n (Year 12) s t u d e n t s m u s t i n c l u d e the f o l l o w i n g s t u d i e s :

E n g l i s h , C h e m i s t r y a n d one of B i o l o g y , Physics or a M a t h e m a t i c s but students are e n c o u r a g e d to take at least f w o of this latter group plus at least one other G r o u p 1 subject of their c h o i c e , preferably in the n o n - scientific area. For s e l e c t i o n p u r p o s e s , only one m a t h e m a t i c s Group 1 subject can be c o u n t e d in the " b e s t f o u r " score unless only four subjects are being taken. U n i v e r s i t y entrance r e q u i r e m e n t s p r o v i d e that a student may not receive credit for General M a t h e m a t i c s and either of Pure M a t h e m a t i c s or A p p l i e d M a t h e m a t i c s . S i m i l a r l y c r e d i t cannot be received for Physical Science and either of Physics or C h e m i s t r y . The subject Physics in the First Year of the course assumes f a m i l i a r i t y w i t h the basic concepts of Physics. S t u d e n t s w h o have not taken H.S.C. 1. Preamble

Except to the extent that they are expressly m o d i f i e d hereby, the General Principles of S e l e c t i o n for Entry to First Year U n d e r g r a d u a t e Courses are i n c o r p o r a t e d w i t h these special p r i n c i p l e s of s e l e c t i o n for the first year of the undergraduate course of the f a c u l t y .

2. Eligibility

A p p l i c a n t s for a d m i s s i o n to the course for the degrees of Bachelor o f M e d i c i n e and Bachelor of Surgery m u s t , at the first or second a t t e m p t , have o b t a i n e d a grade of D or h i g h e r in four subjects i n c l u d i n g E n g l i s h " , Chemistry and one of P h y s i c s , B i o l o g y or a branch of M a t h e m a t i c s at the Higher School Certificate e x a m i n a t i o n or its e q u i v a l e n t , and the results o b t a i n e d in any s u b j e c t s a t t e m p t e d subsequent to a second a t t e m p t shall n o t be c o u n t e d in the f o r m u l a . Mature age a p p l i c a n t s s h o u l d note that a pass in the test in E n g l i s h1 is not an acceptable alterna- tive to the o b t a i n i n g of a grade of D or higher in E n g l i s h .

3. Selection

3.1 The results o b t a i n e d in E n g l i s h " a n d C h e m i s t r y , if not a m o n g the a p p l i c a n t ' s 'best f o u r ' s u b j e c t s , and the best result o b t a i n e d in Physics, B i o l o g y or a branch of M a t h e m a t i c s , if one of these subjects is not a m o n g the a p p l i c a n t ' s 'best f o u r ' s u b j e c t s , shall be s u b s t i t u t e d for the result o b t a i n e d in one or more of the 'best f o u r ' s u b j e c t s referred to in the f o r m u l a a d o p t e d under the General P r i n c i p l e s of S e l e c t i o n , p r o v i d e d that the result o b t a i n e d in a second branch of M a t h e m a t i c s shall not be i n c l u d e d , except if no other result is a v a i l a b l e .

3.2 W h e r e an a p p l i c a n t has a t t e n d e d for more years than are usual in the senior years of s e c o n d a r y s c h o o l before s i t t i n g for the Higher School Certificate e x a m i n a t i o n or its equivalent, the total of the c a l c u l a t i o n pursuant to the f o r m u l a shall be reduced by up to 1 0 % , dependent u p o n the c i r c u m s t a n c e s .

3.3 The S e l e c t i o n C o m m i t t e e may i n t e r v i e w any applicant w h o shall not have a t t a i n e d the age of 17 years by 31 M a r c h in the year for w h i c h a p p l i c a t i o n for s e l e c t i o n is m a d e , for the purpose of d e t e r m i n i n g w h e t h e r the age of that a p p l i c a n t may adversely affect the a p p l i c a n t ' s a b i l i t y to pursue s u c c e s s f u l l y the course.

a t t e m p t e d the V i c t o r i a n Higher School Certificate Examination and in assessing the relative l i k e l i h o o d of their success, the S e l e c t i o n C o m m i t t e e may require an a p p l i c a n t to undertake w r i t t e n or oral tests in any subject to establish the relative s t a n d i n g of the applicant a n d the c r e d i t to be given pursuant to paragraph 2.1.2 of the General P r i n c i p l e s of Selection for Entry to First Year U n d e r g r a d u a t e Courses.

3.5 In assessing an a p p l i c a n t w h o has c o m m e n c e d but not c o m p l e t e d a t e r t i a r y c o u r s e , selection w i l l be based on p e r f o r m a n c e d u r i n g t e r t i a r y studies in a d d i t i o n to p e r f o r m a n c e at the HSC e x a m i n a t i o n . 3.6 In c o n s i d e r i n g an overseas applicant for s e l e c t i o n , a c c o u n t w i l l be

taken of the a v a i l a b i l i t y to the a p p l i c a n t of m e d i c a l e d u c a t i o n in the a p p l i c a n t ' s o w n c o u n t r y and the existence of any agreed p r o g r a m m e s of assistance to that c o u n t r y .

4 . Reservation of places in quota ( d e f e r m e n t )

4.1 The number of reserved places g r a n t e d in any year shall not nor- m a l l y exceed by more than 5 0 % the annual average number of such places g r a n t e d over the p r e c e d i n g three years. Preference in granting reserved places w i l l be given in a c c o r d a n c e w i t h quota score r a n k i n g . 4 . 2 A n a p p l i c a n t w h o is ranked in the l o w e s t 2 0 % of those to w h o m

places have been offered and w h o has requested the reservation of a place in the s u c c e e d i n g year's quota must s u b m i t a reason for the request. A s u b m i s s i o n f r o m a s c h o o l p r i n c i p a l may also be c o n s i d e r e d . If, in the o p i n i o n of the s e l e c t i o n c o m m i t t e e , the reason is insufficient, the request may be r e f u s e d .

4.3 N o t w i t h s t a n d i n g the p r o v i s i o n s of paragraph 3.5 of the General P r i n c i p l e s of S e l e c t i o n , a p p l i c a n t s w h o have been g r a n t e d reserved places shall n o t i f y the A s s i s t a n t Registrar of the f a c u l t y by 3 1 s t December of the year for w h i c h d e f e r m e n t has been g r a n t e d , whether or not the reserved place w i l l be taken up in the f o l l o w i n g year.

4. Selection

4.1 The s e l e c t i o n c o m m i t t e e may require an a p p l i c a n t to a t t e n d for such i n t e r v i e w s a n d w r i t t e n tests as it c o n s i d e r s a p p r o p r i a t e for deter- m i n i n g the a p p l i c a n t ' s c o m p e t e n c e in English expression and c o m p r e h e n s i o n .

4 . 2 In r a n k i n g a p p l i c a n t s the selection c o m m i t t e e m a y :

(a) give greater w e i g h t to results o b t a i n e d in subjects most relevant to the m e d i c a l c o u r s e ;

( b ) take into a c c o u n t results in such tests of k n o w l e d g e a n d c o m p e t e n c e in s u b j e c t s for w h i c h c r e d i t is sought, as are p r e s c r i b e d by the s e l e c t i o n c o m m i t t e e ;

(c) take into a c c o u n t i n f o r m a t i o n s u p p l i e d by an a p p l i c a n t ' s referees;

( d ) except as p r o v i d e d for in f a c u l t y W o r k i n g R u l e s1 select a p p l i c a n t s w h o have not yet c o m p l e t e d a m e d i c a l course at a u n i v e r s i t y in preference to a p p l i c a n t s w h o have c o m p l e t e d such a c o u r s e . 5. Conditional Selection

The M e d i c a l P r a c t i t i o n e r s A c t 1970 makes it possible for a person to be e n t i t l e d to apply to be registered as a legally q u a l i f i e d m e d i c a l prac- titioner in the State of V i c t o r i a il that person h o l d s the Degrees oi Bachelor of M e d i c i n e and Bachelor of Surgery of any u n i v e r s i t y in A u s tralia as to at least the last three a c a d e m i c years of a regular course of m e d i c a l and s u r g i c a l study at that U n i v e r s i t y .

A s a c o n s e q u e n c e , the f a c u l t y of M e d i c i n e has f o r m u l a t e d the f o l l o w i n g general p o l i c y g o v e r n i n g the a d m i s s i o n of students w h o have c o m p l e t e d the w h o l e or part of a m e d i c a l course e l s e w h e r e :
