ASSESSMENT
Successful completion of the unit will depend on participation in group discussions and on the quality of the research project presented at the end of the unit.
METHOD OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
This unit will be taken in two streams:
Stream A: For students who are taking Environmental Science C. Students under- taking this stream will spend two hours a week on Method of Environmental Science.
Stream 8: For students not taking Environmental Science C. Students in this stream
will
spend one hour a week on the unit and must also take Method of Science.SYLLABUS
The breadth of the subject matter will be similar for each stream, but greater depth will be required from Stream A students.
The unit will be a basic preparation for the teaching of environmental science in the secondary school. There will be a core area examining the philosophical basis of environmental education, and the 'single subject versus total infiltration' debate, as well as examination of some programs from kindergarten to adult levels. Students will then consider a range of relevant curriculum programs and materials for secondary schools.
Students will have adequate opportunity to pursue particular interests, including Earth Sciences and MSC Environmental Science.
BOOKS
Comprehensive reading lists will be distributed during the course of the unit.
ASSESSMENT
Assessment is based on presentation of a seminar paper and assignments.
METHOD OF MATHEMATICS 1
A series of lecture/discussions, seminars and workshops for students who require some background in the methods of teaching junior mathematics.

SYLLABUS
The unit will provide an overview of some of the themes of junior mathematics, and methods of teaching some of the more important areas. Aids to teaching will be examined.

Prerequisite: Only those students who have a special interest in mathematics education may, after consultation with a member of staff, take this unit. See also recommended combination of method units as listed on page 143.
SYLLABUS
The unit will be arranged to explore in depth the methods of teaching some aspects of the contemporary mathematics curriculum. Areas for special study may include computer education, the development of teaching aids and materials and the develop- ment and/or the evaluation of curriculum material. Students will have the opportunity to investigate other areas.

METHOD OF PHYSICS 1
Prerequisite: A pass in Physics at second-year level SYLLABUS
The unit is primarily concerned with the teaching of physics in Victorian senior secondary schools. It is designed to acquaint students with the rationale, methodology and materials associated with the PSSC course. Other areas of emphasis will include testing and examinations, other curriculum developments, and the general methodo- logy of teaching. The unit will be constructed on a lecture/discussion basis and will involve film and laboratory sessions, demonstration experiments, teaching aids, end student seminars.

METHOD OF PHYSICS 2
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
This unit may be taken only in conjunction with Method of Physics 1.
Prerequisite: A pass in Physics at second-year level SYLLABUS
The content and nature of the unit will be determined by negotiation between students and staff involved. It is anticipated that the areas which may be covered would include further curriculum development and the current literature giving details of research into secondary school physics, especially the decline in popularity of physics among students.
