4.4.1 Summative internal assessment 1 (IA1): Performance (20%)

Performance (20%)

This task requires students to perform repertoire and devise a statement of intent. Their response will show a demonstration of technical, interpretative and communication skills.

Assessment objectives

This assessment technique is used to determine student achievement in the following objectives:

1. demonstrate technical skills for the chosen instrument or sound source

3. analyse music elements and concepts through the choices made in the performance 5. apply literacy skills, using music terminology relevant to genre/style and language

conventions to communicate ideas about the choices made in the performance 6. interpret music elements and concepts of the chosen innovative genre/style 7. evaluate the choices made in the performance to communicate the intent 8. realise music ideas to communicate the intent.

Note: Objectives 2, 4 and 9 are not assessed in this instrument.

Specifications

This task requires students to:

 demonstrate technical skills specific to the instrument or sound source, including - control, dexterity, fluency, security and coordination

- understanding of the role as a soloist or ensemble member, considering balance, blend and intonation

 interpret music elements and concepts to show understanding of genre/style

 realise their intent through the choices made in performance

 devise a statement of intent that analyses and evaluates the choices made in the performance.

Conditions

 Preparation time: approximately 15 hours, in both class time and students’ own time. Students must be given continuous class time to develop the performance .

 Audiovisual recording of the response is required to substantiate teacher decisions made on performances.

Response requirements

 Performance: up to 5 minutes

 Statement of intent: written up to 500 words; or up to 3 minutes filmed oral, filmed signed or audio (equivalent of up to 500 words)
