5.4.1 Summative internal assessment 3 (IA3): Project (35%)

Specifications

This task requires students to:

 investigate a topic relating to narrative in film music, television music, game music, musical theatre, opera or program music (including art song)

 devise a viewpoint relating to their topic

 analyse music elements and concepts, and compositional devices in repertoire to convey the narrative through setting, characterisation, drama and/or action, and mood or atmosphere

 evaluate the use of music elements and concepts, and compositional devices in repertoire to convey the narrative in film music, television music, game music, musical theatre, opera or program music

 provide evidence to support their judgments using PDF, MP3 or MP4 excerpts

 use referencing conventions

 when composition is selected in the project

- use music elements and concepts, and apply compositional devices - resolve music ideas to communicate the narrative

- devise a statement of intent that analyses and evaluates the use of music elements, concepts and compositional devices

 when performance is selected in the project

- demonstrate technical skills specific to the instrument or sound source, including

 control, dexterity, fluency, security and coordination

 understanding of the role as a soloist or ensemble member considering balance, blend and intonation

- interpret music elements and concepts to show understanding of genre/style - realise the narrative through the choices made in performance

- devise a statement of intent that analyses and evaluates the choices made in the performance.

Conditions

 Preparation time: approximately 25 hours, in both class time and students’ own time.

Students must be given continuous class time to develop the integrated project.

 Audiovisual recording of musicology spoken or signed responses is required to substantiate teacher decisions.

 Audiovisual recording of performances is required to substantiate teacher decisions.

 This is an individual task.

Response requirements

 Musicology — one of the following - written: up to 1000 words

- spoken, signed or digital presentation: up to 7 minutes (equivalent of up to 1000 words)

 Composition: at least one minute

 Performance: up to 5 minutes

 Statement of intent: up to 500 words; or up to 3 minutes filmed oral, filmed signed or audio (equivalent of up to up to 500 words).
