SYLLABUS A survey of the structure, composition and history of the planet Earth. This will include the materials constituting the Earth; the processes operating on and within it, their dynamic effects and the resultant structurai changes; the concept of geological time and the evo- lution of life; evolutionary processes in the history of the planet Earth.

Tutorials will be given on various topics within the course. They will be arranged at the beginning of the unit.

Field excursions will be held on Saturdays and/or Sundays, and during laboratory periods. Field work reports will be used In the assessment of the student's examination results.

Prerequisite: 101.

SYLLABUS A systematic introduction to the main branches of Geology.

The nature of crystalline substances; the relations between crystalline structure, chemical composition and physical properties of common minerals; the nature and products of igneous and metamorphic activity.

The relationship between geology and the surface environment; surface processes and the formation of sedimentary rocks and landforms. Mineral deposits and geological energy sources, their origin, exploitation and subsequent Impact on the physical environment. The deformation of rocks and the geological results of earth movements. Past life and the record of evolution; the bases for elucidation of geological history and selected topics in Australian geology.

EXAMINATION A total of six hours theory and practical. The theory examinations will be equally divided between the August and November examination periods. The practical examinations are also equally divided, and will be held at the same time as the theory, or at the students' con- venience. Short tests may also be held during the practical sessions.

200 LEVEL

Students wishing to major in Geology are required to enrol in Units 201 to 206 Inclusive.

Prerequisites: For students majoring in Geology, 101 and 102. Students 81

not majoring in Geology who wish to enrol in a few individual units may ask to have the prerequisites waived; each case will be considered on its own merits.

FIELD WORK The prescribed field excursions for units 201-206 inclusive held at weekends or during term vacations, and a 3-day field mapping exercise held during term vacation. Brief written reports on field work are required.

EXAMINATIONS Theory examinations are held in the University's examination period immediately following the completion of the unit.

Practical examinations will either be held at the same time, or at the students convenience.

300 GEOLOGY CORE UNITS

Students majoring in Geology will be required to take units 301-309 inclusive.

In some units the ratio between lectures, practicats and field work may be varied from that specified.

Prerequisites: For students majoring in Geology, 201-206 Geology. Stu- dents not majoring in Geology who wish to enrol in a few individual units may ask to have the prerequisites waived. Each case will be considered on its merits.

Students are strongly recommended to gain additional experience during the preceding long vacation by obtaining a temporary position with a company or geological survey. The department of Geology will assist in this regard. They are also reminded that the ten-day field exercise is held before the commencement of first term.
