Section 2

Instructions

• Section 2 relates to Thebes — East and West, 18th Dynasty Egypt and refers to Sources 6–15 in the stimulus book.

• Respond to the following question in an essay in response to historical sources.

• Your essay in response to historical sources requires sustained analysis, synthesis and evaluation of the stimulus material to support a hypothesis.

• This section has one question and is worth 37 marks.

• Respond in 800–1000 words.

QUESTION 6 (37 marks)

Akhenaten was the pharaoh of Egypt from c. 1353 to 1335 BCE. He was the son of Amenhotep III and started his reign named Amenhotep IV. After the death of Akhenaten and the brief reign of Smenkhkare, Tutankhamun became pharaoh in c. 1332 BCE and the royal court returned to Thebes from Amarna.

Using evidence from Sources 6–15 in the stimulus book, write an essay in response to historical sources that develops a historical argument in response to the question: Egyptologist Nicholas Reeves has characterised 18th Dynasty Egypt as a period of power struggles between the priests of Thebes and the pharaohs (Source 6). To what extent does the evidence in the sources for the period during and after the reign of Akhenaten support this characterisation?
