A trend in terms of student numbers was the slight decrease in demand for places in the first year of the Faculty's degree courses. Unfortunately, the increase in the number of research assistants and fellows did not help the accommodation problems of the Faculty.
BOARD OF SOCIAL STUDIES
In August, the Department hosted, under the sponsorship of the Asian Regional Association for Social Work Education and the International Federation of Social Workers (Asia), a workshop with social work educators and practitioners. The theme of the workshop was "Diversity and Social Justice - The Role of Social Work and Social Work Education".
THE LIBRARY
This project is well established in the Library and in its use by the Faculty of Medicine. For the first time, the Library has a modern, well-equipped audio-visual environment that adequately serves the needs of a section of the University.

OFFICE FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION
The main areas of enrollment were the Faculty of Arts (particularly the Departments of Fine Arts, Philosophy, Italian, Classical Studies) and the Faculty of Economics and Commerce (Accounting). Eighty-six percent of applicants had attempted a higher level of tertiary study, while 46 percent of the total obtained a bachelor's degree.
FINANCE
6.370 Non-recurring Expenses for development
2.981 Buildings and Grounds
Cash balances up to 1 percent of the total periodic grant may be carried over within a three-year period to meet expenses in the following year. Computer systems and payroll system integration were ready to be introduced in early 1980.
BUILDINGS
This voluntary support contributed substantially to the renovation of historic buildings in the country. Parking continued to be a major problem due to restrictions imposed by the Melbourne City Council in areas surrounding the University site.
STUDENT AFFAIRS
Production of the daily activity magazine continued and the classified billboards in the Union Foyer were retained, but there was declining demand for the Ad Rag. This was mainly due to the large number of visiting foreigners for the Sydney Biennale. Mr. Norman Kaye was in residency as a dramaturg during the second half of the year at the instigation of the University's Theater Board.
UNIVERSITY SPORT
THE GRADUATE UNION
Occupancy of the residential sections of Graduate House has been high and it is hoped that the demand for rooms, whether for overnight, short, medium or long term periods, will continue to grow. During a visit to the Ontario region of Canada, the Secretary-Custodian went to several university clubs that agreed to an exchange of privileges for members. The Union continued to pursue its first constitutional aim of promoting the welfare of the University of Melbourne by asking for direct contributions to the Graduate Fund or for members to add something to their annual membership fees, by accommodating (often at very short notice) notice) departmental visitors and postgraduate experts, by making our membership lists available to the University and by forming a link between the University and graduates.
MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY PRESS
While some members used the Stillwell Room to read newspapers and magazines, drink coffee and listen to recorded music, others used the Sir William Johnston Library for more serious reading. The reciprocal arrangements for sharing privileges with overseas clubs are a promising new benefit for members. Melbourne University Press now balances its accounts on 30 September each year (ie not at the end of the calendar year).
MELBOURNE THEATRE COMPANY
Young designer Tanya McCallin, who grew up in Australia and is now in high demand overseas, returned here to design four plays, and Australian actress June Jago, who originally left Melbourne with the first production of Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, returned under MTC sponsorship. Eight new plays were read in public and a production of The Hypothetical End of Bert Brecht by Jan and Martin Friedl was produced for a week at the Russell Street Theatre. These public performances of works by new or experimental writers have been approved by the audience, and at least two of the selected plays are to have a full production during 1980.
THE UNIVERSITY ASSEMBLY
The second assembly week was held from April 2 to 6 on the topic University and money. A number of speakers discussed the prospects for the University in light of the current financial difficulties. In accordance with the Assembly's policy of encouraging general debate at the University, some of the Assembly's reports have been produced as monographs.
