Speaking skill is said to be the most important aspect of English language because people usually judge a person's ability by his speaking skills, and also people usually assume that one's success can be seen by the way the person speaks ( Nuraini, 2016). As a result of the research proposed by Ismayanti cited in Darwis (2018), that students are less active in learning English speaking skills because it is affected by local accents. Accent is a distinctive speech or language tendency possessed by each person according to the origin of the territory or the people of the nation.

In learning to speak English, culture can also be a factor in students' difficulty in speaking English fluently. Due to different backgrounds and cultures, accent becomes one of the problems for the second semester students of Muhammadiyah University of Makassar, especially students from outside Makassar. The researcher chose the students Bugis because it was one of the local languages that had strong accent and many second semester students of English Education Department of Muhammadiyah University of Makassar come from Bugis areas.

Previous Research Related Findings

The samples were the students in the third semester of the English Education Department at Unismuh Makassar. Here it was also found that the students should consider their first language which is influenced by their English pronunciation. The main causes that the students face are related to the phoneme that is influenced by their mother tongue.

The researcher explains that the difficulties in the student's local dialect with the accent may interfere with the students' ability to speak English. The sample in which the B and F class students consisted of 20 students in the third semester of the Department of English Education of the Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. The result showed that the students agreed that the regional accent, especially the Buginese accent, influenced speaking skills.

It states that comprehension is the power of understanding and practice designed to improve or test an individual's understanding of language (written or spoken). In addition, understanding can also mean the ability to perceive and understand in the main; the power of grasping ideas; the ability to know.

And as for the purpose of interaction is to create social relations and demonstrate the meaning of the conversation (Richard, 2008). Stress is the relative emphasis that can be given to a particular syllable in a word, or a particular word in a phrase or sentence. In English, the term "stress" indicates the perfection of the single syllable Ladefoged cited in Pongpairoj (2020).

A consonant is a speech sound in which the airflow from the lungs is completely blocked (stopped), partially blocked (to the side), or because the opening is so narrow that air can escape with a friction. According to Wolfram and Johnson cited in Yuniarti (2009), vowels have unique characteristics of general variation in the shape of the size of the oral cavity. High vocal dimensions refer to the relatively highest point on the body of the tongue on a vertical scale.

The last dimension of the vowels refers to the relative position of the high part of the tongue body on a horizontal scale. Says the city's population consisted of native Sulawesi and immigrants from other Indonesian ethnic groups in the capital for several generations and call themselves the Makassars. Four groups of ethnic groups make up what can be called the natives of the southern region.

Based on the above explanation, the researcher concluded that an accent is the way someone pronounces the word.

Conceptual Frameworks

  • Research Instrument
  • Data Collection Technique
  • Data Analysis
    • Data Reduction
    • Display Data (Data Presentation)
    • Drawing Conclusion

Non-participant observation is the observation that does not involve the researcher as a participant (Sugiono 2012). In addition, the researcher conducted the observation to know the situation in the class specifically when the students speak English in the class. Interview was conducted by the researcher if the researcher found a lack of data from the observation.

Structured interview is a type of interview where the researcher prepares a list of questions that will be asked by the researcher. In this interview, the researcher only saw whether the answer of the students is correct or wrong, but the researcher only wanted to know how they speak, especially their pronunciation, so that the researcher can analyze about the matter investigated. While conducting the observation, the researcher filled in the observation checklist based on the matter analyzed that happened in the class.

After collecting data from the observation, and the researcher still has missing data, the researcher interviewed the students one by one. After completing the interview, the researcher carefully listened to the recording to analyze the conversation to obtain data. Finally, the researcher analyzed the data obtained from observation and interview regarding the impact of Bugis accent on students' speaking ability, especially on students' pronunciation.

Data reduction is the process of selecting, simplifying, and transforming data into field notes (Miles & Huberman, 2019). The data obtained from the observation can be many, so it must be reduced. In this step, the researcher summarized the data and selected only the key point to establish clear and specific data related to the problem in this research.

In addition, the researcher made a brief conclusion of the research that has been conducted, which answers the researcher's problems.
