www.rlac52.com.au rlac.teamapp.com What an amazing day for our first round!! If only the weather can

keep that up for the next few months!!

Along with the amazing weather, as was our turnout for our first day. You could tell we would have a big athlete turnout when the line for competition patches snaked down the driveway! Thanks to the tireless working team who did their very best to get all the patches and handbooks distributed as quickly as possible. All paid up members are entitled to a handbook, so if you have not already done so, please grab one from the registration table this weekend.

Our coaching and training sessions also kicked off this week - these are free for paid-up U8-13 athletes, so be sure to check it out.

These sessions provide the coaches more time to work with athletes to ensure technique is correct and help them improve - it may be all your athlete needs to get their next PB! You can find further details regarding the training further on in the newsletter.

We are also warming up our relay batons for the impending relays season - they are great events with many options for athletes across a variety of distances. We also like to enter mixed gender teams each year, as it is a great way for our boys and girls to compete together. Box Hill is a great fun day and we all come together as Team Ringwood. It is always great to hear Team Ringwood cheering and supporting our athletes as one as they compete. More details are contained in the newsletter.

See you at the track,

Bryce

COACHING AND TRAINING SESSIONS

With our Track and Field season officially underway, we are launching our Training and Coaching sessions. We are excited to be able to offer these sessions to our athletes as an extension of our Competition days.

These sessions are to be held at Proclamation Park on:

• Wednesday 4:30pm – 5:30pm

• Sunday 9:00am – 10:00am

The sessions will run each week throughout the Track and Field season.

These sessions are FREE for all athletes.

These sessions will be open to U8-13 athletes. We are currently looking at options for our younger athletes and we will communicate our intent on this once a decision is made.

The sessions will cover multiple disciplines each week and will offer coaching and training in a track event (sprints, hurdles, circular), a jump event (long, high and triple) and a throw event (discus, shot put and javelin). These sessions will give the coaches time to focus on individual athlete technique and skill in each discipline.

The sessions are to be headed up by Steve Smith and Debbie Voogd, two of our parents who are accredited athletics coaches. Supporting Steve and Debbie will be a number of enthusiastic Ringwood Athletic Club athletes who are all ex-Little Athletes, with many also holding a formal coaching accreditation.

Some other points to note if you will be attending:

• We expect parents of athletes attending the session to also be in attendance or to have organised for another parent to have responsibility for their athlete/s.

• Training groups may be limited in size to ensure an appropriate coach to athlete ratio and allow each athlete to get the most out of the session – we encourage you to arrive a few minutes early to ensure you don’t miss out.

• There is no need to register or commit as a regular attendee – you can attend whenever it suits you.

Note, existing specific event coaching offered by coaches Peter Benifer, Reinhart Hansen and Mick Shaw will still be offered. See the newsletter for details on this coaching.

STARTING COURSE VOLUNTEERS

Ringwood Little Aths is currently looking for volunteers to become official accredited RACE STARTERS.

To make it as easy as possible to become a race starter, we are even hosting a starter’s course at Ringwood on Sunday 22nd October. All fees for the course are covered by RLAC, so all we are asking is your time between 1:00pm and 3:30pm.

We are currently short on race starters, so every extra set of hands able to start a race helps us keep our competition days running smoothly.

If you are interested, please email us. Registrations for our course close on the 18th October, so please let us know as soon as possible if you are interested.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Bring-A-Friend Day

To be conducted on Saturday 21 October during our normal competition time. All athletes are encouraged to bring a friend to athletics on the morning so that their friend may participate in the events offered. All athletes who bring a friend and the friend who attends will receive a small treat on the day.

A flyer may be collected from your Team table on Saturday morning.

Crystal Creek Coaching Camps

This year will be the 40th season that EMR have conducted Coaching Camps at Crystal Creek.

The first camp this season will be conducted Friday 17th – Sunday 19th November for the U10 &

U11 age groups

The U12-U15 age groups camp will be Friday 1st – Sunday 3rd December

If you register for one of these camps by 25th October the cost will be $250 per athlete. After that date the cost will be $275 per athlete. The cost covers travel to and from the camp, meals, accommodation and fun activities.

Ringwood Athletes will join athletes from the other 11 Centres in Eastern Metropolitan Region (EMR) and travel by coach to Alexander and returning to Ringwood on Sunday evening. Athletes stay in cabins with ensuites and are grouped within their own age group. As well as coaching throughout the weekend, there are also lots of fun activities, torch light walk and movie.

Some of our Ringwood athletes have already registered to attend the camp. If you go to the EMR website and follow links to the camps, you will be able to see a small video that was taken a few years ago.

A number of Ringwood adults are in attendance at the camps. We are always looking for new Coaches to attend, so if you are interested or would like more information please see Irene.

For more information regarding these camps, please see Irene Harris at the track to collect a registration form or to ask any details pertaining to the camps. Alternatively you may call on 0402070099

RINGWOOD HEIGHTS REPORT

A big warm welcome back to another season of Little Athletics! It’s great to see some new and familiar faces.. Our Ringwood heights team is sure growing.. How great is our new track! We are lucky to have one of the most updated and fantastic facilities in Victoria.

Our Personal Best PB board will be ready for some stickers in the coming weeks. I wonder who will be our first PB medalist for the season? Please pop to the Ringwood Heights table and introduce yourself to Avril or Naomi if you have any questions.

Please consider relays for this season for ages kids Under 8 + ( Box Hill meet ) and ages Under 9+ for the regional and state meets. The relays events are such a great and fun atmosphere. It really bonds the kids as team Ringwood. Please speak with Avril Smith, Ringwood heights table manager, if you would like to chat and see what’s expected. ASAP as teams are finalizing.

Good luck to all our athletes for a brilliant and successful 2017/2018 season.

USE OF SPIKES, BLOCKS AND CROUCH STARTS FOR U11-16 ATHLETES

Some questions have recently been raised about the use of spikes and blocks by U11-16 athletes.

To clarify, the Little Athletics Regulations are:

• U11-12 may use spikes in 70m-400m events & all jump events & javelin

• U13-16 may use spikes in ALL track events except walks & all jump events & javelin

Spikes are not compulsory for any age group

• • Blocks are optional for U12-16 if NOT wearing spikes

• Blocks are mandatory for U12-16 if wearing spikes

• • Crouch starts are compulsory for 70m-400m events for any U12-16 not using blocks

We will be working with all U12 athletes in the coming weeks for crouch starts and blocks starts to ensure they are compliant with Little Aths Regulations.

How good was that weather last week- a perfect start! It was great to see so many familiar faces back at the track, although a bit bigger, and a big welcome to all of the new faces too.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be setting up our PB list for you to check how you’re going through the season.
